I do this all year with 3 different pizza places in town. I take their oil for free. (I personally know two of them) and it powers my Ford Excursion 6.0 powerstroke. Now there's some myths about biodiesel... Many people think it renders you completely independent from fossil fuels. It doesn't. You still need regular diesel to be in the engine and all fuel lines upon startup and shutoff. Otherwise: the oil, although filtered and cleaned of all impurities: can still gelatinize in the fuel lines and clog up the valves rendering your car useless. What I did was re-work the main fuel tank to hold 37 gallons of biodiesel.. and I have a smaller, 7.5 gallon tank of high-sulfer diesel. Upon startup: the truck uses the regular diesel. Then after a few minutes, an aftermarket red light on my dashboard shuts off... meaning the veggie oil in my main tank is warm enough to flow freely through the lines. So I activate a switch on the dash (also aftermarket) and switch from diesel to biodiesel. When I want to shut the engine off: I switch the fuel feed back to the regular diesel and wait about 5 minutes (it helps a lot if you know that you're 5 minutes away from your destination so you can just switch it then and there instead of having to idle for 5 minutes in the parking or your driveway) After 5 minutes: your fuel lines should be flushed of the biodiesel and you can shut it off. If your engine is off... so is the heating element in the veggie oil tank. So don't worry about it overheating and causing a fire. It doesn't get it anywhere near it's flash point anyways. Hope this helps anyone looking to convert a diesel to biodiesel!

Nothing comes with zero environmental costs. If you go with electric vehicles you will have to deal with the pollution coming from coal and natural gas derived electricity. If you get your electricity from a windmill you will have to deal with killed birds and bats. If you get it from hydro power you will have to deal with disrupted rivers. If you want to go with all natural transportation, i.e. horses you will have to deal with their form of pollution. No such thing as a free lunch. Perhaps a far less costly lunch.

To be fair at this stage you can already use the filtered oil for your car as long as it's an old diesel car and not the fuel injection ones. The fuel is thicker than your regular diesel so replace your fuel pump into a heavy duty ones

@@Talltrees84 there are clean renewable ways to source electricity without harming the environment too much, we have damns that are necessary to protect towns that we could use more, wind mills don't really pose a threat to avian life, solar wouldn't be outlandish if we put more money into it. The thing is we cannot escape environmental hazards until we completely switch over. The energy it takes to mine, manufacturer and ship all of these products is going to have a huge footprint, and I think some people are put off by that. The world is approaching an energy purgatory, people are going to continue being stubborn until the market is forced to change and everyone will have to end up paying more for it.

this video skips the explanation of the transesterification process which depends on other chemicals in order to take place. either NaOH is needed in order for the reaction to occur or KOH potasium hidroxide. Also the reaction for biodiesel manufacturing needs methanol. nice video but you absolutely skipped some important chemical reactives.

@martymcfly8535
@martymcfly8535 3 жыл бұрын
All he did was warm cooking oil. That's not fuel. A simple chemical reaction is how it's turned into fuel. Warming the oil may aid in the reaction but Didn't even mention adding any chemicals to the oil. Even if you had followed it. All you did was get slightly warm cooking oil. You can make the fuel without the equipment listed on a smaller scale. kzbin.info/www/bejne/bpS9gYNoltlrfqs The science of making Bio diesel is very basic chemistry. And one of those things that can improve with advanced equipment. But also be done using very basic tools. Measuring cups, and containers. The chemicals used while dirt cheap are also caustic so basic safety should be used to avoid getting them on yourself in the process. The video we watched was a very poor commercial that failed to demonstrate how to use the processor properly. If your fueling a farm and all it's equipment a small processor will be handy. If your just keeping a commuter car going you can go by the video I linked.

Yeah, that’s false advertising
@martymcfly8535
@martymcfly8535 3 жыл бұрын
@@adamtain7627 The worst kind of false advertising. First while it is possible to use just filtered cooking oil as a fuel. (Some US military vehicle engines are built purposely to handle all sorts of crap as make do fuel. Including cooking oil. Meant for adaptability in a combat situation.) However that said the reason people make bio diesel in the first place is because cooking oil used as a fuel is long term not good for the engine. The difference between cooking oil and bio diesel is that cooking oil while it contains what you need to use as fuel. It also contains alot of crap that can't burn or don't ignite well in an engine. This leads to rapid build up in the engine. The video I linked noticed how the Cooking oil goes from looking like Cooking oil to crystal clear almost like water? That's because that process is stripping out the crap that can't burn. The left over crap if you got the right set up can be further processed into soap. You could straight up become zero waste with a good bio diesel set up. But yeah why that's the worst false advertising is it will damage people's property. Like if you wanna say you can use straight up cooking oil as fuel you can. But don't fucking omit important details like the fact it causes rapid engine build up, and long term is bad for the vehicle. As a desperation fuel situation it's fine. Like run out of fuel in the middle of nowhere. Nobody has fuel. But maybe you got cooking oil on hand enough to get you to the next gas station.

heres a tip just take a electric kettle then put the used oil inside... when the oil heats up it will be sperated from the chunks and go to the bottom. I put a hose at the bottom with a screen infront of it. so when it is done heating up i just turn the lever on my hose and biodiesel comes out. It is perfectly safe for your car, cheaper and better for the enviroment.

I understand from your video that you encourage biodiesel production at home. However, intentionally or unintentionally, you did not show all the details of the process in the video. You insisted on two details: oil filtration and heating, but you did not mention anything about the raw materials used, namely methanol and potassium hydroxide. Producing biodiesel at home, from my point of view, is very stupid. Here's why : 1. Potassium hydroxide is a highly corrosive and toxic chemical to humans. Only someone with serious training in the field should work with such a thing. 2. Methanol is a very toxic product. Even if you work outdoors, as you suggested in the video, when methanol is transferred from the canister where the free steam is in the reactor, to a greater or lesser extent, it will be inhaled by the person handling it. Small amounts of methanol ingested even in the form of vapors lead to permanent blindness, and larger amounts inhaled or in contact with the skin can cause death. 3. The chemical process results in a residue consisting of glycerin, potassium hydroxide and methanol. What do we do with this highly toxic and corrosive residue? 4. In order to obtain quality biodiesel, the crude fuel obtained must be washed with water to remove methanol. What do we do with the wash water? 5. The biodiesel obtained must be stabilized with an additive, otherwise it may degrade over time. Do you use something like that? 6. What is the production price of the biodiesel fuel thus obtained, relative to the price of fossil fuel? 7. Can you chemically explain how carbon dioxide emissions are reduced? According to the chemistry that I know and have been practicing for 34 years, burning an organic substance that contains carbon, hydrogen and oxygen always results in carbon dioxide and water. As well as burning the hydrocarbons that make up fossil diesel fuel. Please excuse my english. I am from Romania.

Do you not think we have enough oil to sustain entirety of US? Here is what you need to know. Oil is basically unlimited or doesn't run out for the next 10,000 years. The fact that OPEC is limiting the oil extraction is what gives value to the dollar cuz the dollar is dependent on their oil. If we start digging excessively for oil we would flood our market and inflate our economy. We aren't dependent on foreign oil. We are dependent on the Dollar.

It's all well and good to make it at home, but how do you deal with the waste? The cheats way to make it is just mix methanol and settle it out, but it is crude and unrefined. The industrial system uses acid esterification which is highly refined but leaves some nasties behind. You can recoupe methanol, glycerine and pottasium phosphate but you are still left with water phase (acid) and highly alkalised water at the end of glycerine extraction. Not so environmentally friendly.

Yes in the long term it will save money, for example in 10 years time you will still be queing up at the gas station to fill your car! This Guy will still be brewing his own using the same cans and machine. You could down scale it to your own needs etc too. Food blender, coffee filter paper etc

Clarify the specs about a biodiesel processor, and also which reagents should we add? Cause as far as the video shows info, it only captions processes such as filtering,sedimenting, if am not mistaken

When you put cooking oil in your vehicle the exhaust fumes will smell strongly of the deep fried food that it was originally used for. I can tell you that exhausts that smell of stale fish and chips are not pleasant.

Ok here: get 1L of oil. Mix 5Grams of NaOH into 150ml of water. Add 350ml of 70% isopropanol to the oil and mix, add the NaOH mixture and wait 1 hour. The top is biodiesel and the bottom is glycerol

Poorly explained it seems to me. As if we all know how he connected the pump and why he opened that valve and closed the other and everything about the heating element... etc. I do not understand english perfectly though...but this clip made me only confused. Learned how to filter bio oil...but i wanted to know more about making own engine fuel...biodiesel.

How do you prevent the cooking oil from forming varnish? I can't get it to burn Cleanly in oil candles. The wick carbons up and will not burn more than a few hours.
