Woodash as a source of potash has been used for centuries as a homemade fertiliser which can be used to fertilise root crops. Woodash can be used as a high potassium feed full of phosphorus but when combined with bonemeal it is also rich in calcium as well as lots of trace elements.
All too often we're told to leave bones and meat out of the compost pile for fear of causing a smell or attracting pests such as rats and foxes, rather than throwing these away we can turn them into a nutritious fertliser for root vegetables.

Nice one sir. I remember a story about how one tribe of american indians both sharing the same space in the desert. One half of the tribe followed the old ways and one a more modern tech path. The old ways crowd, throw the ash from burnt trees which they had collected as fire wood for cooking in ovens and when the wood was burnt away and all that was left was the minerals in the ash, that the tree had drew up from the earth through the root system in it's lifetime. So they tossed the ash over their gardens during planting season and not only were the plants bigger and more healthy but they contained an enormous volume of minerals that enhanced the health of the indians who consumed them. The modern tech crowd of indians asked them "hey, how come you never get sick?" lol. Thanks for another great tip brother. peace : )

👍👍👍👍 I had a 55 gallon burn-drum, and lots of brush to burn in it. A layer of red ash developed in it, so I add the cat that failed to cross road. The ash was still hot the next morning. After the barrel cooled I emptied the ash out and the bones of the cat appeared and they crumbled into a POWDER. DIDN'T know I had perfect calcium plus the ash / fertilizer from the brush. There was no need to crush the bones in this circumstance.

Thanks for the video. We have started making our own fertilizers/additives in addition to the compost piles. When growing up dad would hand me a posthole digger and have me dig as deep as I could get and add the dirt to the compost piles which would be added to the gardens the next growing season to "remineralize" the soil.

I have and it is a amazing since I really don't eat much meat but I grow oyster mushrooms and Lions mane mushrooms and they're delicious. Great idea, one less thing to throw away! We have a wood stove, is it worth putting bones in at the end of the evening with last lot of wood. Then emptying/blending the cooled ash into our compost in small amounts? I read if you mix wood ash, it should be only be done to the point where you can't see any obvious difference in colour. Maybe it's worth storing the ash until spring when we use the compost - will this be ok? Appreciate your advice, thanks! 😊

I wanted to try this method of heating bones in the fire, so decided to do a little research and found this video, thanks for the input..........when I have seen instructions for making Bone Meal commercially it has either said steam them or bake them in an oven before pulverising them................so I wondered...........if heating bones in a fire (that is very high heat......a lot higher than an oven) could somehow ruin the chemical composition in a way that is not beneficial to preserving the Phosphorus in the Bone Meal (like when you make charcoal.......the chemical product of heating wood on a lower heat is a lot different than when you just burn it in a fire........because only the impurities are released when you heat it without combusting it.....but the burnable carbon is preserved as charcoal). This is something of a mystery to me at the moment.......but I would love to understand the process and the nature of Phosphorus better..........temperature seems to play a big part in how chemicals react and change. I've heard that clay soils can actually hold onto Phosphorus better because they don't leach nutrients away as easy.............but the trade off is that clay tends to be at least partially alkaline (which isn't good for Bone Meal.........as it doesn't release Phosphorus without being in an acid or neutral soil). I'm still definitely going to give it a try though......even if I just oven bake the bones............and use the wood ash from the bonfire for my Potassium booster.

You're absolutely right, burning on a naked flame will cause a reduced amount of phosphorus available to the plants, but calcium doesn't burn. The reason i use this method is because the fire was used to BBQ so the ash and charcoal are by products, rather than heating in the kitchen oven just for this if that makes sense. Try planting buckcwheat as a cover crop, that will make available the phosphorus in the soil to plants

My family garden - Please, how did you save the bones? Did you compost them first or did any dog or cat help with it? I mean-how did you get rid of the "bad bacteria!" and meat which was left on them? I cant imagine just leaving them somewhere and wait couple of weeks...

The bones were left over from cooking so there was very little left on them. If you have a dog it could help by cleaning the bones.

One thing you could do is put your bones 🦴 in a Tupperware or plastic bag and put them in the freezer. Then when you have a fire 🔥 pull them out and use them

Walaikum Salaam, A little about me, i am an Imam and a mufti and teach islamic studies. I contacted a number of manufacturers about 4/5 years ago and they confirmed they use slaughterhouse waste regardless of animal source including pigs/cows/sheep and chicken. Some of the manufacturers do list the animal sources, but the majority do not. Blood in itself is haram for us to buy and sell and pig even more so.

Bone meal with release nutrients over a few years. There will be some phosphorus loss dues to the heat but from a waste products it's acceptable. If you have bone meal I wouldn't use it to make this because it will burn completely
