Probably dried rations. The vegetables and meat reduce to about 20% of their volume and weight when dried only to be easily revived with hot water, it also preserves them for months on end. You could pack several weeks worth of food this way without it weighing you down too much.

Id say wait until the final 20 mins - you really just want it melted in. I haven't tested in the slow cooker so ymmv, but too long might make the cheese gluey
