There's one catch to that poultry answer, though: Owls are carnivorous, feeding on small mammals. That not only makes them more expensive to raise but also more difficult to eat. When measuring caloric efficiency for carnivores, you have to factor in the caloric efficiency of their prey, too. Furthermore, carnivore meat isn't as easy to digest as herbivore meat.

Flaw in logic: total weight does not inherently equate to how much meat one would yield. It’s very possible that the bulk of mudbray’s weight is made up of inedible components, like hooves or bones. Dense bones would be a necessity to support all that weight. That’s not even considering the caloric intake that heavy Pokémon might require too.

Evolution would probably actually be a good choice for farmers, since Pokémon can level up by eating rare candy, it's description in more recent entries just says that it's "packed with energy", probably meaning it's packed with nutrients, you can assume that they level up if they gain enough nutrients by just eating simple food, meaning, they also evolve just by eating, they just probably grow faster by fighting and that's why Pokémon trainers fight with them instead of feeding them all day.

I feel like there are a few things that weren't considered here. For one, in the milk production Miltank is still going to be the best option. Alpha/Omega pokedex states that it can produce over 5 gallons a day. While not more than a regular dairy cow, they are much smaller at roughly 1/10 the weight. As for eating meat, the weight doesn't equal a greater food source. For that to be true the muscle mass would scale as well, showing a larger and heavier pokemon. Mudsdale and mudbray are heavy sure, but we don't know if that's muscle, bone, or most likely straight up mud and rocks. Mudsdale and mudbray eat dirt for sustenance as well, meaning that breeding and farming them would be almost impossible, as dirt (unlike grass) doesn't just grow. Even if they are made of meat, they make it from dirt, meaning it would constantly dig out whatever land you had until it was just dead rocks. Not saying there aren't applications to this, just that in terms of food, it seems unlikely. (Also it'd probably taste rank and be incredibly tough)

The only problem I have with this video (aside from when MatPat said Garchomp and Gabite showed up on screen) is that he didn't read up on Mudbray's and Mudsdale's diet from their Pokedex entries, which mainly state that they get their nutrients from mud. The problem with this is that animals that eat mud and dirt exclusively have very poor meat, for example mudcatfish, they bottom feed off of muddy ground underwater and end up with poor tasting meat since their nutrients come from the mud. Having something with very poor tasting meat quality as your main source of red meat isn't very appealing, so alternatives would definitely be chosen for that food role.

Something else that makes this interesting is that some pokemon offer natural byproducts such as Slowpoke's tails fall off and they don't even feel pain if the tail is removed and they just grow back, or some grass type pokemon naturally produce their own vegetables or fruit that can be harvested without harm to the pokemon.
@marksaterapi13893 жыл бұрын
Honestly, Vegetarians would have it easy. All you need to do is grow berries and vegetables, and if you want to have some Pokémon by your side, then raise a Tropius and a Appletun. They chase, sprint, headbutt, jump, splash in any puddles they find.. much of which is play-fighting. Pokemon in the anime train amongst one another (even outside of true battles) and headbutt trees and rocks to grow stronger. a fast enough leveling pokemon, given ample space and other pokemon to play with (""Battle"") wouldn't need much oversight from a farmer to evolve. While this doesn't disprove using a horse/donkey pokemon for meat, it does give more opportunity to use other pokemon as a food source.

@pichu78563 жыл бұрын
Considering how skidoo’s milk is only readily available in Kalos it makes more sense why more regions use Miltank instead, it’s more common in other regions. A good look at this if from Alola. Skidoo can’t be found in the wild and would have to be transferred from a different region which would be far more costly and too high of a risk since the people of this region are more likely to buy product which they are familiar with. Same with the Galar region, Skiddo can’t be found naturally. (they also can’t traded over but we will ignore that for now.) but you know what can be found naturally right on the isle of armor? Miltank, but the isle of armor is a more secluded place, only people with an armor pass can enter. So the our question boils back to our beginning statement.

Also: In Alola, there is a farm where you can find Mudbray, and they also have a bunch of Tauros and Miltank. And am i wrong for saying that moo moo milk is Miltank milk? There was an episode that showed an island full of "Pudgy Pidgey", being 3x larger than your average Pidgey at a weight of 12 lbs, with the loss in their ability to fly due the lack of predators. If selective breeding & genetic modification was possible in pokemon, we'd exclusively raise the Pudgy Pidgey as a broiler chicken, having the same hatch rate as Hoothoot, with a medium slow growth rate with only a diet of grains & maybe a few Caterpie. Then there's the daunting thought of "Pudgy Pidgeotto", being a whopping 132.2-198.3 lbs, depending on a 2-3x growth rate, while your average Noctowl would only be 89.9 lbs, only having to maybe add Magikarp to the existing diet. My main question about this is why fish were immediately discounted. While it may make up a comparatively small amount of western diets, Pokémon is a Japanese property, and fish make up around 40% of protein in the average Japanese diet. (I haven't compared all fish Pokemon, Feebas and Goldeen come to mind as contenders, but went with Magikarp as a default) Considering that Magikarp have the fastest hatch rate and require little space and care (going off of real life fish farming processes and Magikarp jump of all games) I'd assume they make up a significant part of the market. Granted the average weight of 22lb/10kg isn't great, alongside the slow levelling rate... Although if we go off of that one Magikarp salesman who sells them for 500 Poké a pop, farmers would make an absolute killing by breeding them! *He's also known to be a massive conman but I don't know of any other referenced Magikarp prices.* Goldeen could be a viable alternative, with a slower hatch time compensated by a faster levelling rate and average weight, but it depends if the people of Pokémon are that keen on goldfish meat. After all that though, you could argue that Magikarp and other fish Pokémon would be part of the fishing market rather than farming, hence disqualifying them from this video. Depends on if you count farmed fish as part of farming or fishing I suppose!
@gantinator3 жыл бұрын
Not just fish, why were bug types discounted? Bugs are THE fast growing fast breeding pokemon. Plenty of real life bugs are used for food and bug pokemon are huge in comparison, seems like it'd be worth a look too
@hi-i-am-atan3 жыл бұрын
issue with magikarp is that it's basically 22lbs of _scales and bones,_ hence why it can barely swim. granted, pidgeotto still go for 'em, but that's possibly for osteophagy and also likely because ... well, the things basically leap directly into their talons anyway, so they're practically free snacks
@Spiracle3 жыл бұрын
@@gantinator Good point, insects are also a commonly accepted food source in many Asian cultures (and should be everywhere but that's a different topic) The only thing I can think of against that point is the hatching speed. Caterpie for instance take around triple the steps to hatch compared to Magikarp (3855-4111 compared to 1285-1541) with a pretty low weight (2.9kg) at the end of it. Larger species like Pinsir (55kg) are slow to level and likely have most of their weight in the shell/pincers. A large amount of bug types are also poison types, so I'd assume inedible, but there are plenty that could still be considered. If the hatching speed for bug Pokemon is discounted solely as a necessary game mechanic I'd definitely say get that Grubbin farm going, and an argument can definitely be made for that because there is absolutely no way those species would survive being at the bottom of the food chain with such a slow reproduction rate
@clovebeans7133 жыл бұрын
If I recall properly in the anime when team rocket is stranded they try to eat magikarp but couldnt since it was mostly amour and scales. If you go by only in game lore then I think it would be Basculin the B2W2 dex entries states that they are very tasty other fish's pokedex entries do not have this. Plus basculin is based on salmon and bass with some piranha traits.
@Spiracle3 жыл бұрын
@@clovebeans713 Looking at it now I fully agree with you, they can hatch faster than Magikarp, level faster and weigh more with in-game confirmation of both types being consumed frequently. Sure you could clip their wings, but one of the reasons that Chickens are one of the preferred poultry meat sources comes from the fact that they can't fly very well (meaning you don't have to worry as much about them possibly escaping at some point.)

@@Gaeilge. Actually there's a very high likelihood that eating certain Pokemon species is considered illegal (dogs and cats are illegal to eat in many places) especially the more humanoid ones. And nobody in the Pokemon canon knows Nurse Joy is a Pokemon (heck, she probably isn't actually its just a theory after all), so they would likely treat her like any other human and thus eating her is very very illegal.

Why is Mudbray so heavy, though? It's a Ground-type pokemon, so it is entirely likely that it incorporates rock and literal mud into its physiology. That means that large portions of it may not be edible at all, and the muscles required to move all that weight around might be too tough to eat as well.
@nasonxian3 жыл бұрын
According to Bulbapedia, Mudbray eats dirt and mud - but, it was also 'hunted nearly to extinction,' so, who can say. I just know I wouldn't particularly want to be eating something whose entire diet is eating dirt in order to create mud.

@@srihithgangireddygari4010 Easiest to catch and breed, but it's directly stated that nothing eats them. There is no meat on a magicarp whatsoever, they are just scales and bones all the way down. A dedicated water type specialist was annoyed at seeing people dumb enough to even try to eat a magicarp, and that was out of pure desperation. Even pokemon that fish, like Slowpoke, who do devour fish pokemon .... every time they catch a magicarp they throw it right back. The things are SO USELESS you can't even use them as food.

What I want to know is which Pokemon are technically edible, but generally aren't eaten, like dogs, cats, and horses (at least in the US). Are there Pokemon where the answer is unclear, and it depends on who you ask, like rabbits? Do Pokemon that would generally be considered carnivores eat other Pokemon? Ugh, every answer I get about the Pokemon world spawns like twenty new ones.

One thing missing, taste. Im sure there are plenty of pokemon that would be easy to raise and farm, but how would a mudsdale taste? From the little I know about hunting, owls probably taste VERY gamy.
@CDN_Bookmouse3 жыл бұрын
He's not talking about which pokemon people would hunt though, he's talking about which pokemon would be farmed. Domesticated animals are bred to be bigger and tastier. Hoothoot as it currently exists would just be the starting point--as were all now-domesticated animals we consume today.
@Ray_Vun3 жыл бұрын
i assume mudsdale probably has a similar taste to horse, which taste like any other red meat. it's not super common to eat it here in europe, but you can still buy it. as a matter of fact, a few years there was a scandal about european supermarkets selling meat labeled as beef and it turned out to be horse. turned out it was the slaughterhouse that supplied the meat that lied about it being cow. but the people eating it never seemed to b able to tell the difference. owls maybe taste like any other wild bird, which is also not that uncommon to eat in europe, although not just something you'll get at the supermarket
@Rogeryoo3 жыл бұрын
Though who knows, maybe hoot hoot tastes nothing like our owls, and mudsdale tastes nothing like horse. After all, they are different animals, so they could taste quite differently as well.
