I make toffee like this, crush it into little bits, and mix it in my cookie dough with chopped chocolate (or chocolate chips), it's great!

Try again. Make sure your best isn’t on high and take it if when it’s a golden colour

A bit above medium heat and constant stirring until its amber golden should do the trick. The key is to be patient and diligent in stirring completely to make sure you aren't letting it stay still and heat up for too long before mixing.
