This is something new to me, Pete. Does it taste as salty as sea salt? This is brilliant 👍👍😍😍 Seems like it's a healthy week this week, I am cooking some vegan dish 😁😊

It's not half as salty as sea salt Fiona, but it can be used in place of salt. It is particularly good with quail or plover's eggs, or any hard-boiled eggs. I like to add it to BBQ rubs and Cajun seasoning. It is a common seasoning in raw vegan cuisine.

Thank you Stephanie's Kitchen! It starts to lose some of its pale green colour to more of a khaki colour after a few months on the shelf, but as a salt it lasts longer than I've ever needed it to. At a guess I'd say 2 years. As it starts to lose colour I then use it all up in BBQ rubs and spice mixes.

Commercial brands sometimes have sodium nitrate (as a preservative), salt and anti-caking agents added, but I would never advocate the use of this; certainly not for the small amounts we use at home. My aim here is to produce at home something better than you can buy. You can also add the herb lovage (levisticum officinale) to give a stronger celery taste.

Celery actually has sodium nitrate naturally occuring in it. The salt itself is used as a preservative so they can avoid listing sodium nitrate on their ingredients

Hi Pete, I have a question ? Where is the salt ? I can read that this is an alternative to salt, but I always thought there was salt in it. We buy it in the store and it tastes quite salty. We only use it in tomato juice ;-) I have a nice anecdote on celery salt. Two years ago, my husband and I took the ferry from Calais to Dover and we ordered a fresh tomato juice in a bar on the ferry. It was quite tasteless, I must say, and I asked for celery salt. I wasn't sure if this was the correct word for it (now I know it is ;-)) because I translated it from Dutch "selderijzout". The staff looked as if I was asking "God knows what" and they said they were going to get it in the kitchen. I think we waited for almost 10 minutes until they returned. We were afraid our glasses would be empty by then ;-) And when they returned, they served us a plate with little bags of salt and a glass with short celery stalks ;-) We had a good laugh and we used the celery stalks as a spoon to stir in the salt and took a bite now and then. HAHAHA...
@LazyCookPete
@LazyCookPete 6 жыл бұрын
I had the same reaction when I first discovered this recipe Dominique, wondering where the salt was. It is a common assumption that salt is added. Salt is not added because celery is intrinsically salty. Good quality celery salt contains only celery, and that's it. Commercial brands sometimes have sodium nitrate (as a preservative) and anti-caking agents added, but I would never advocate the use of this; certainly not for the small amounts we use at home.
@LazyCookPete
@LazyCookPete 6 жыл бұрын
Your anecdote is very amusing and it highlights the mystery surrounding this wonderful seasoning. To me no bloody Mary is complete without celery salt, and celery stalks with salt is a very poor substitute! You can make an even stronger flavoured celery salt using the herb lovage (levisticum officinale), which is a very commonly used plant in Romanian cuisine, where it is used extensively in soups and stews.

@@LazyCookPete Dehydrating is definitely better. I got impatient and used the air fryer. Gonna need a do over.

Each to their own Lasse, and celery does tend to polarise people. As a child I hated it, but I eventually grew to love it.

It is definitely salty, but not as salty as table salt. It tastes amazing on boiled eggs.

I made the mistake of buying some "celery salt" from Amazon without noticing it had added sea salt ,it was so salty, very strong indeed. (I hope they didn't source it from the Dead Sea as that is 15 times more salty than usual and unsuitable for humans to ingest.) it made it unsuitable for me as I need to cut right down on sodium because of high blood pressure and water retention so BEWARE ! it smelt strongly of celery which I like even with the packet closed, makes the kitchen smell nice . I have left out adding sea salt to my meals over the past few days which made them taste very bland ,BUT I have noticed an immediate improvement in my legs which had quite bad water retention which was uncomfortable and unsightly. I have also stopped eating bread and have lost 7 pounds in a week I have crispbread or corncake's instead, my waistline has also reduced. I wonder if I am gluten intolerant ? I intend to continue with cheese ,my favourite food it does contain a certain amount of salt, we must have some salt in the diet but not too much.. I am now going to make some real celery salt to Pete's recipe and see how that turns out I must have some savoury taste to my meals, I'll be back !

I always make my own celery salt, that way I know what's in it. Gluten intolerance is more common than most people may think. You could try bread made from Einkorn or Spelt flour and see how you go with that. It's not a bad idea to cut down on the amount of gluten you eat anyway.
