Today I am sharing my homemade version of everyone's favorite, seasoning salt! You know the one with the red label that we all had on the spice rack growing up and probably have sitting on the back of our stove right now? Me included! Well let's change it up and make our own using things that we have on hand. I guarantee this one will taste better and it will help you use up spices you have sitting on your pantry shelf. This will help you to be sure it gets used because this stuff is delicious on everything from a grilled chicken breast, to season soups, stews and sauces and don't forget crunchy cereal snack mix which you cannot make without seasoning salt! You will find yourself reaching for this versatile blend time and time again!
Look at the ingredients on a bottle of commercial seasoning salt. For the most part you have what you need to make this. Salt, sugar, paprika, turmeric, garlic, etc. Then we get into the ingredients that stop clumping. These ingredients can actually be harmful to the body and can act as blockers to nutrition absorption. Then we get to the very end where it says "other spices" or just "spices". Then we are left to our own devices to figure out what those are. If you have a great palate, this should be easy, however, not always. There can also be corn starch, soybean oil and other questionable ingredients tossed in there for good measure. I think we can do better!
My blend is pure. It contains all the spices listed on the jar, and some that are not because I know I can taste them in there. I have started with 1/4 cup of fine salt. I have used canning salt. You can use table salt if you like. There is a bit of sugar as well and you can leave that out if you like, but it really does add to the overall blend. Then I have added paprika, chili powder, garlic and onion powders as well as turmeric, and ground celery seed. The celery seed is part of the "other spices" that they like to list. I think it adds a very distinct flavor that would be missing if it were not included here.
If you don't like something I have added or if you just don't have it, leave it out. If you like something different, add it in. I would recommend, however that anything you add be ground fine. This will help everything blend together better.
I have stored mine in a jelly jar with a tight fitting lid. This will last me about six months and then I can make more. You can store this in an airtight container in a cool, dark dry place for up to six months.
I hope you try making this homemade seasoning salt for yourself and I hope you love it!
Happy Eating!

Chilli powder in the USA is abit different that in the UK it is a blend of chilli powder and various other spices such as cumin NOT pure chilli powder. And yes in the past i made that error, it made the "american chilli" inedible. This is an excellent recipe, I make the base recipe [ with a diy american chilli powder recipe] as my goto AP seasoning, from there i experimented making afew different versions to suit different flavour profiles. Thank you for the video, take care, God bless one and all.

The chili powder I use only has a blend of different dried and ground chilis in it. It does not contain cumin or any other spices. Just ground chilis. Chili seasoning has a blend of many spices, including cumin, garlic, onion, etc.

Thanks loads for this, I use season salt in quite a bit of my cooking and I just got a new cookbook today as is. I've been hounding the net for copycat recipes and I just recently found my best lead on Medieval Times herb potatoes they serve. According to someone who used to work in the kitchens at one, the spices they put on the potatoes aren't too different from just a bottle of this brand of season salt so a good copycat for this is great. About how long will this stuff last sealed in an airtight container?

@noreenskitchenchannel 5 жыл бұрын
I don't recommend leaving out either of those. They are essentially what makes this the red color of a traditional seasoned salt. Neither of them, the chili or the paprika are spicy at all. In fact, both are extremely mild. Paprika comes from sweet bell peppers and chili powder is red from peppers that are not spicy.
