Recipe:
1 1/2 packages active dry yeast
3/4 cup warm water
1/4 cup oil
2 eggs + 1 for egg wash
1 tsp. salt
1/2 cup sugar
4 cups flour + extra for your hands
Mix yeast and warm water, make sure it bubbles. Mix the eggs, oil, salt and sugar one ingredient at a time until well blended. Add flour. Knead with your hands for 5-7 minutes.
Set in a bowl and cover with a towel in a warm place for 1-2 hours, then punch it down and let it rise again for another 1-2 hours. If in a rush you can skip this second rise! Braid, brush the top with egg wash (egg yolk mixed with water). Bake at 350F for 25-35 minutes.

A good trick is to add a water bowl to the oven makes the Challah extra fluffy also we really love adding sesame seed all over :) great video like always

Hey marion, thanks for sharing your challa baking with us. I wanted to add that when baking challa it’s a special time to pray for your family and anyone else on your mind. It’s actually one of the three mitzvot we jewish women have been given 1) challah 2) nida 3) lighting the shabat candles there’s a special blessing we say when kneading a dough for challa

Lord, Marion! I was just washing dishes, getting out my food processor to mix up 2 more batches of hamentaschen dough for my freezer (because I finally got more cream cheese at the store)...just a quiet night...And now you’ve inspired me to put together a batch of dough for challah tomorrow. Ack! Baking bug has bitten me bad! I guess I was very easily influenced by this one! You look like such a challah pro! I’m very impressed! Practice makes perfect, so I’m gonna haul out my flour and get mixing and practicing (since I did not review my Friday challah subscription at school for this semester). Happy Valentine’s Day and an early Shabbat shalom! 😘

Thank you for your recipe, I made Challah for the first time 4 Shabbat’s ago and it turned out AMAZING! I was absolutely floored how easy, delicious and perfect it was. I followed your video and pushed pause and play every step of the way! Today I tried just following your instructions in the link and the dough was very dry. So I said let me try this again, second batch same thing, but, so I didn’t waste another batch of dough I stopped adding flour at 3 cups and the consistency was like before. I went back and watched your video and turns out that it should’ve been 1 cup of water and not 3/4 cup as posted in your link. 🤪 Anywho, I’m praying it turns out okay. 🙏🏽and I still love your video, heart and spirit, you’re such a beautiful young woman.

Today it was going to be the first day that I was going to attempt to bake challah in our Dublin house since we moved in, but was going to use the recipe the calls for 10 cups of flour and I was feeling overwhelmed already with the idea, I mean I’ve baked it before but in my other house. But in your description list of ingredients you have 1/4 cup of oil!!! What you show in the video doesn't match the paper or the typed list lol.

I think you can! I always say before these things were invented everything was done by hand, it can even be a workout lol! I think a hand mixer is good for the first part (the wet) and then maybe a spoon + hands for when you add the flour!

@@MyJewishMommyLife Thank you for your reply. I say the same thing! My fear is using the hand mixer when the flour is added. I have a condition that as a byproduct makes it painful to mix thick/sense things by hand. I am concerned that my hand mixer may start smoking if I use it once the flour is added. I might just give it a go and if the mixer saya no mas, I can get another one for pretty much a song. Thanks again!🌷😺🐱

For what it’s worth, I did the entire thing with my hands in a big bowl last night (periodically using a spatula to really scrape down the sides) and did a little hand kneading on the countertop this morning and it turned out great. I find that washing my hands is easier than washing my mixer so 🤷🏻‍♀️, it can be done!

Shalom, 1) The yeast mixture didn’t double in size. It did have some bubbles but I think bc I mixed it so there was bubbles. Do I leave it there longer next time? I added 1/2 tsp sugar as the package said and I used thermometer to make sure it’s not too hot. 2) the dough got stuck to my mixers, should I use the mixer for the first cup of flour and then after, just use my hands for the last 3 cup of flours (add 1 cup at a time)? I’m having a hard time cleaning my mixer since the dough got caught into 1 of the 2 holes where you insert the mixer sticks. I was using the hand held mixer. I’ve used it before when I used to make challah bread years ago but I can’t remember the recipe so I’m using yours but not sure where I’m going wrong. Hope you can help me with these questions. Thank you in advance. Elizabeth

I want to try this for next Shabbat. Is is supposed to be sweet? i never had challah before [according to my parents, we're not Jewish, though our family's name kinda points to it. i'm pretty sure there's a bit of Jewish blood in us, though] and reading about it online, i really can't imagine what it would taste like. they call it a bread, but with sugar and eggs in it, makes me think of cozonac [a sweet 'bread' usually made for special occasions, like Christmas and Pascha. it is called 'bread' because it has a very similar preparation method, but it's sweet, whereas bread is not supposed to be sweet.]
@MyJewishMommyLife
@MyJewishMommyLife 5 жыл бұрын
That's so cool to hear! I would say it's very lightly sweet, it's something that I would put butter or cheese with as a more savory bread but also would put Nutella with as a sweet one, it's very in between lol hard to describe! I hope it turns out well for you and that you like it!
