It depends, professionally, testing is done for a long period of time, before the shelf life of a product is determined. For DIY, a good example is, if you prepare a cream, check the shelf life of every ingredient you use, the shelf life of your final cream will be the same as the shelf life of the ingredient with the least shelf life.
