Anyone attempting this should also. -Wash Bulbs in/out with soap/water. -Use a Stainless Steel Washer. Galvanized or Zinc coated metal would be poisonous and would rust! -Dont use Magnets, most stop working in high heat. -Use food grade/high heat Silicon Adhesive and Rubber washers (is poisonous/cancerous not to). -Would complete a few passes with just water before using. Overall, Cool Project :)

It might corrode a little and get in your food I'm not terribly afraid of ingesting zinc oxide I am pretty terrified of in haling the gas and getting heavy metal fever. This will not happen with this setup as the washer is submerged in coffee and far from the flame.

while i admit the though and creativity that went into this are remarkable, not to mention the fine presentation. I would have reservation about using the coffee maker as light bulb glass is not tempered and applying heat to it can create micro fractures and glass around the areas where you break or file could break. commercially available glass coffee makers would be molded into shape and be made out of pyrex. additionally, the solder and adhesive used in assembling the light bulb can contain toxic materials like lead.

Dunno about the "thin glass/thick glass" shattering theory mentioned above but think about the heat that conventional light bulbs have to endure every time they are turned on(and left on). I would say that they are manufactured to tolerate heat. Not so much for impact resistance though lol!

Mercury? Lead?
@AflacMan139 жыл бұрын
Yes... light bulbs have both... the brass coated steel thread base you use to screw the bulb into a light socket... not onlyis it soldered to the tungsten wire filament with lead based solder, but that metal also has lead in it as part of the alloy usually. Many light bulbs, especially neon ones, also have a small amount of mercury in them. It may not be in incandescent bulbs, but I know lead is in there. And if you use the cloudy glass bulbs instead of clear ones, the cloudy stuff on the inside on the inside of the glass... if I remember right that is crushed glass powder. So... yeah. Have fun with brain damage. :)

Perhaps you should be concerned about ingesting the metal residues from the inside of the bulbs as well as the bases, that the acid in coffee will dissolve into solution. In general, don't eat or drink out of anything that wasn't made for it. Much of the brightly colored, decorative (not cookware) "pottery" from China has super high lead content. No danger though, unless you try to eat or drink out of it - then it's very very dangerous! Just a thought. Love your vids!

Will definitely be making this project. Easy way to make some very strong coffee when the standard drip coffee maker just is not cutting it.

This is a pretty awesome build. Nice job. does any one make a commercial version out of glass I'd buy one just to show my students.

Hey Anthony. Vacuum coffee brewers is not a new invention. Far from it. In fact the company, Bodum made it big time in 1958 with the Bodum Santos. It is still in production to this day. If you have access to a chemistry class however... You should be able to put something cool together with flasks :)

I think i would put some for of silicon resin over the edges to prevent shards in coffee, or cuts. great project, very steam punk. going to try it soon.

If you were worried that vacuum coffee tastes like ass, well worry no more! Now it tastes like silicon sealant and superglue. Still very cool! I wonder if you could use this as a prototype for a commercial version made completely of glass with just the rubber gaskets? I'd buy one. Kickstart it!

Pretty cool and practical use of science if you don't fancy buying a coffee machine. Might be worth washing all the components before brewing though :p
