Anyone attempting this should also. -Wash Bulbs in/out with soap/water. -Use a Stainless Steel Washer. Galvanized or Zinc coated metal would be poisonous and would rust! -Dont use Magnets, most stop working in high heat. -Use food grade/high heat Silicon Adhesive and Rubber washers (is poisonous/cancerous not to). -Would complete a few passes with just water before using. Overall, Cool Project :)

+tayeb mabruk You do realize that boiling water is not high heat. Think fire or welding. It might corrode a little and get in your food I'm not terribly afraid of ingesting zinc oxide I am pretty terrified of in haling the gas and getting heavy metal fever. This will not happen with this setup as the washer is submerged in coffee and far from the flame.

while i admit the though and creativity that went into this are remarkable, not to mention the fine presentation. I would have reservation about using the coffee maker as light bulb glass is not tempered and applying heat to it can create micro fractures and glass around the areas where you break or file could break. commercially available glass coffee makers would be molded into shape and be made out of pyrex. additionally, the solder and adhesive used in assembling the light bulb can contain toxic materials like lead.

Dunno about the "thin glass/thick glass" shattering theory mentioned above but think about the heat that conventional light bulbs have to endure every time they are turned on(and left on). I would say that they are manufactured to tolerate heat. Not so much for impact resistance though lol!

+hijibiji nickiji We brew emergency coffee in the Forrest using two plastic bottles and Old Man's Beard (a type of moss): Fill one bottle with water and coffee, toss it in the fire. Cut the top of the other plastic bottle and fill the neck with some Old Man's Beard. Once the coffee has boiled pore it in the "filter" And there you have it lead and silicon free coffee using food grade and natural organic materials. Although I'll give him a 10 for creativity, the materials he used are not safe if he plans on using that brewer over a long period of time.

for the project for today we only need a couple of old light bulbs. yup, just two light bulbs and two light bulb holders. thats it you guys, two light bulbs, two light build holders and some metal wire. also, maybe you need sandpaper, a pair of pliers, gloves and mask for protection, a pipette, silicone with gun of course, a couple washers, rubber gaskets and with some strong magnets and ring holder you got yourself some coffee! isn't it crazy what you can do with just two light bulbs?

Yes... light bulbs have both... the brass coated steel thread base you use to screw the bulb into a light socket... not onlyis it soldered to the tungsten wire filament with lead based solder, but that metal also has lead in it as part of the alloy usually. Many light bulbs, especially neon ones, also have a small amount of mercury in them. It may not be in incandescent bulbs, but I know lead is in there. And if you use the cloudy glass bulbs instead of clear ones, the cloudy stuff on the inside on the inside of the glass... if I remember right that is crushed glass powder. So... yeah. Have fun with brain damage. :)

cool video, but I'd like to point out that the mask you wear have minimal to none protective functionality for what you are trying to avoid. which is glass dust. that facemask is for using as dentists and doctors to avoid getting splatters of bodily fluids from patients into their nostrils or mouth so that they don't get whatever disease the patient might have, and vice versa. You need a dustmask if you don't want to inhale dust. Keep safe;)

Perhaps you should be concerned about ingesting the metal residues from the inside of the bulbs as well as the bases, that the acid in coffee will dissolve into solution. In general, don't eat or drink out of anything that wasn't made for it. Much of the brightly colored, decorative (not cookware) "pottery" from China has super high lead content. No danger though, unless you try to eat or drink out of it - then it's very very dangerous! Just a thought. Love your vids!

Amazing skills, wow! but I wouldn't drink that coffee. Too many contaminants as others have pointed out. You could make one with 2 or more bulb glass parts without metal, I think that would be cleaner and hopefully the coffee purer. But I like how you made holes in the bulb using sandpaper :-). Look forward to more such videos.

I was watching your video with my grandpa whom is an electrician, and we were wondering if the glass would possibly break? Light bulbs can handle heat, but its generally dry heat... Other than that inquiry the video is amazing and your very inventive...

Don't light bulbs have mercury and lead in them? This seems cool, but I would rather not get poisoned and die.

Very cool project. Love the look of it as well. Just wondering about emptying the lightbulbs. Breaking out the inner glass part leaves a rough edge of glass on the inside. Wouldn't that be a dangerous issue, as it is quite likely that glass parts might break of at some point and therefore end up in the coffee ?

This is very clever and useful. Way to go Rolof Maker. I have a question: does the water contact hot glue and would it ever become hot enough to melt it? That would be my paranoid concern when making one of these.

Hey Anthony. Vacuum coffee brewers is not a new invention. Far from it. In fact the company, Bodum made it big time in 1958 with the Bodum Santos. It is still in production to this day. If you have access to a chemistry class however... You should be able to put something cool together with flasks :)
