which clay would be best for a beginner using a coal fire instead of a kiln?
@PotteryCrafters2 күн бұрын
Hi Sophia. I would recommend a stoneware or Raku clay with grog because it will be a bit stronger for coal firing. here are the links for you to check them out Raku geni.us/w35ka Stoneware geni.us/pDm6Qpb

Can I use glaze on my concrete cement projects
@PotteryCrafters4 күн бұрын
That is a very important question. Unfortunately you would have to fire the glaze in the kin and you can't fire the cement in the kiln. You can however use acrylic paints. Here is the link for you geni.us/4ExvbxP 😊

Can you use the same technique using Stroke and Coat instead of underglaze? Also another glaze related question. How do you remove dust prior to glazing a narrow necked bottle (too narrow for a sponge)? Thanks again for a detailed informative video.
@PotteryCrafters4 күн бұрын
Those are very good questions. 1. Yes, you can! You just don't have to apply clear glaze. 2. You can rinse with water. Just make sure you give it time to dry because the bisqueware sucks up the water.

The Albany Slip is nice, but it's crazy how far off it is from the actual Albany slip. Not at all like it.

Albany slip brown is one of my favorite glazes. I buy it buy the gallon. The thinner you apply it the darker it gets and the thicker you apply it the lighter it gets. 👍😊

I can’t find where to see how much the firing costs on the kmt I’ve entered the rate from my electricity bill. I just can’t find where it tells me after the firing what it cost me .
@PotteryCrafters9 күн бұрын
Hi Sharon, I tried it, but it didn't work for me either. You'll need to contact the kiln manufacturer. They can tell you how to set up your electricity rate. 😊 Not sure how your electric bill works. For me, a day after I fired, I looked at the daily rate and subtracted the firing from the daily bill. I have found that when I bisque fire my 818 - 3, it costs around $3, and a glaze fire costs around $5. Hope this helps 😊

QUESTION: I apparently got a bit overzealous when underglazed my bisqueware vase, trying to ensure that I got good coverage and saturation. However, after it was fired, there was some cracking and peeling of the underglaze. The instructor suggested I knock off the glaze (rubbing with my finger) the areas that were peeling, and then reglaze only those areas, so we can then refire it. My concern is I am still seeing the ‘margins’ or outline between the new and old areas, meaning the thickness shift. Question is, when this gets re-refired, will those still show or will it smooth out?
@leannecorvington245711 күн бұрын
Maybe after it’s fired, then sand lightly on the margins?
@PotteryCrafters11 күн бұрын
Good question. Yes the underglaze should blend with the fired underglaze. But Depending on how thick the fired underglaze is it may still show. If it is real thick you could try using fine sandpaper to smooth the extra underglaze and reunderglaze and bisque fire again before you apply glaze and final fire. That way if it doesn't blend you can still fix it. 😊

That's funny I just replied and noticed this question. Yes I suggested that too 👍😊

@potterycrafters Hi Marie. Thanks again for your wonderful, careful instruction. I have another question though. Can you use underglaze velvets, for example, on the outside bottom half of a mug without putting clear glaze over it. Would it still be durable, say, in the dishwasher (I would fire to clay vitrification and glaze inside and top outside). For that matter could I use full outside of mug with a wash like maycos manganese wash without clear glaze and be safe? THANKS!!!!
@PotteryCrafters11 күн бұрын
That is a good question. Yes you can! The wash also. You can put it in the dishwasher if the clay is vitrified. If you would like more detailed information these posts will help. 😊 potterycrafters.com/do-you-have-to-glaze-pottery/ potterycrafters.com/is-pottery-food-safe-without-glaze/

Really useful videos. thank you. When you say you fire cone 6 with 20 min hold do you set your own program or just use Skutt pre-programmed? If you use the pre-programmed option do you choose slow, medium or fast, and is the hold at the very end? Thanks so much!
@andersonmisha13 күн бұрын
Sorry… I meant to write cone 5.
@PotteryCrafters11 күн бұрын
Yes. I choose medium and the hold is at the end. This helps the glaze heal and evens out the temperature in the kiln.

I'm trying out porcelain because someone said it was good to use with slips. I'm having difficulty throwing it thin. Are you supposed to be able to throw it thinner than stoneware?
@PotteryCrafters13 күн бұрын
That is a great question. I have found that Amaco A-Mix stoneware white clay is great for throwing thin because The A -mix clay is as close to porcelain clay that Amaco carries. It is more plastic and holds up longer then porcelain making it much easier to throw with. In my 21 throwing tips it shows how thin I can throw with A-Mix. Here is the link for you kzbin.info/www/bejne/jn2YXpZ4o7iVY7s It is tip #18 - 15 minutes in. Here is the link to the A-mix clay geni.us/hZeg It is also good to make and use as slip 😊

How would you fix clay walls when they get too thin? (handbulding)
@PotteryCrafters14 күн бұрын
That is a good question. You can roll out a thin stab, cut out the slab to cover the thin area then gently score and slip the area and patch. Then place the patch on the thin area and carefully smooth it out. Hope this helps. 😊

Yes, I mainly apply 1 one coat sometimes 2 if the coverage looks too thin because the thickness of the underglaze can very. The underglaze will look much brighter after you fire it!

@ I’m in the process of making a propane kiln/forge and wanna see if my clay from the yard is good.
@PotteryCrafters18 күн бұрын
Hi Johnathan. That's a great idea. The clay from your yard should fire fine because you're firing higher than 1945 degrees F - cone 04. Because you don't know the composition of the clay body in your yard so it's best to low fire. Like pit firing and raku firing with the propane tank. Here is the link to Raku firing kzbin.info/www/bejne/nIuql4yciZKtpsk

Hello from Europe!!1 Thank you so much for all the information! One question..does the slip have to be from the same kind of clay I m using, or it doesn’t matter? I m afraid if the slip shrinks or dries differently the piece is going to crack..thank you in advance!
@PotteryCraftersАй бұрын
Thank you. That is a great question. I do because, yes, a different clay body may cause cracking. So my slip is always the same clay body. I have a great success rate. 😊
