My round Speedwell bat warped while sitting in my hot car 😢. Do you think it’s fixable? My supplies often have to stay in my car while at work. Any advice on how to prevent warping?
@PotteryCrafters2 күн бұрын
I would suggest trying to keep the bats on a flat surface in the car maybe in-between some heavy books . You may have to get the bat warm like setting it out in the sun then place a book on it then a rock or something like that. In this video I show how I tend to my warped bats , but none of them were speedball bats. Hope this helps 😊

THANK YOU SO SO MUCH. I just bought a used kiln and have done 2 firings, bisque and glaze. The bottom portion never turns out. Why? I just placed the shelf on the kiln floor. I never knew you had to raise it to haha. Lordy lordy. Let's see if this helps my next batch 😅
@PotteryCrafters2 күн бұрын
You are most welcome. Yes, The air has to flow under the bottom the shelf. What also helps is to fire to 5 cone and put a 20 hold at the end. This is equal to cone 6 except it equalizes the temperature in the kiln and helps to cure the glaze and helps to prevent pinholes. 😊

At what point do you wire off - at leather hard or as soon as you finish throwing? Also, what is the diameter? And, I would be afraid to glaze that far down close to the base, for fear of it running off onto the kiln shelf and getting kicked out of the studio I use. How did you insure that it didin’t run onto the shelf? I always leave a kind of ugly unglazed few mm at the bottom for safety. Thanks for your answers and all of your helpful videos!!
@PotteryCrafters9 күн бұрын
Great questions! I wired off when the clay is leather hard. I threw it 7 inches high and 4 and a half inches across measure the inside to make sure the wine bottle will fit. I don't apply as much glaze on the bottom and I always make sure I have a nice edge on the foot for the glaze to pool if it runs too much. Because you use a studio kiln you may want to use cookies. It's important that they are flat. Here a post with a video that may help. potterycrafters.com/how-to-make-kiln-cookies/ If you have any more questions feel free to ask 😊

How do I make my pieces food safe with vitrified cone 6 inside the mug
@PotteryCrafters14 күн бұрын
Good question. If the cone 6 clay is fired to cone 6 the clay should be vitrified. With Raku the clay can not be fired that high because Raku is a low fire technique. These 2 post may help potterycrafters.com/is-pottery-food-safe-without-glaze/ potterycrafters.com/is-raku-pottery-waterproof/ 😊
@Mollyedmonton13 күн бұрын
@@PotteryCrafters My question may be unclear. I wonder if I can raku fire a mug that has gone through cone 6 firing. Because I want the inside to be food safe. The process would be bisque fire, then cone 6, then raku fire with raku glaze outside for the beautiful effects. Have you tried it?
@PotteryCrafters13 күн бұрын
Yes I was wondering the same thing when learning about Raku firing and asked my Raku teacher. He told me you can't because the pottery is no longer porous and the raku glaze will not adhere properly to the vitrified clay. 😊

@PotteryCrafters22 күн бұрын
You are most welcome. The good news is the low fire glazes have advanced a lot over the years and are more similar to mid fire glazes . For example: Because there is more flux added to the glaze it can flow at a lower temperature. So If you are looking for a drippy low fire glaze, look for the glazes that say things like flow or float. 😊

I have had that happen to my speedball underglaze and took it because it happened right away. Since then speedball has changed there recipe. I use spectrum a lot. I have heard to use a touch of vinegar but the underglaze may turn gritty. I will be talking with Amaco soon. Would you like me to ask them and get back to you?
@Worrier62925 күн бұрын
@@PotteryCrafters Thanks for a quick response, Marie. Yes please, do ask Amaco. I’ve seen this happening to some of my Velvet colours. I’ve been painstakingly removing the moldy layer. I’m in India and due to the high temp in my region (or another reason), Amaco velvets dry up quickly but they remain usable and are more dependable in their fired colour output than locally made underglazes. I don’t have access to other western brands in India. While Velvet Red-Orange-Blue colours remain moist, they develop mold.

Hi there, I just followed your video to make colored slip with black mason stain. Easy. However, you say in your video that 2 T mason stain = 1 ounce. I weighed AND used a Tablespoon and when I put the first T in, it weighed 1 ounce already. Should I have gone with 2T or 1 oz? I went with the weight measurement but could always add another spoonful. I looked elsewhere and people say it depends on the color you're using. Thoughts?
@PotteryCrafters26 күн бұрын
Yes you are right. The amount does depend on the color you want to achieve. It's always good to measure out the clay and stain so you can create the same color shade if you want. Making black clay. That sounds cool! 😊
