Don't care what others think,, but if Comics really MATTER, you need to do more videos like these. The Golden Avengers Annual with Ms. Marvel, and this will show new readers what comics can truly be like...

Heh... Good luck with that! Those people wouldn't know their Kirby from their Lee's and Buscema's. It's a VERY arrogant group working at Marvel now. The contempt for the past is only matched by their contempt for fans who want quality in their comics! This book itself has been in out of print a few times... It's nice when it comes back into print but it's pretty much too late at this point for the Direct Market. Still a good reference book to have. This book and the Andrew Loomis and Preston Blair Cartoon books are excellent resources to have to for cartoonists and comic book artists. Most of the how-to books are kind of worthless and basically only teach you how to draw in someone else's style instead of teaching you FUNDAMENTALS...

Yeah, my Dad was trying to break into comics in the 80's and early 90's, so I practically grew up with the book. Pages got worn out and trashed, but I purchased a fresh copy a few years ago on Amazon. On the subject of making comics, How To Draw The Marvel Way is the best book to own. Whoever wins Zack's giveaway, take care of the book because it's the gift that keeps on giving.

I got this book a few weeks ago. It's a great overview for someone who wants to be a comic book artist. The fun part is it's all Stan Lee's narration so it's impossible to read it and not hear his voice. Also read the stuff about drawing males and females. It's scandalous compared to how they do it today. Lol

You don't have to be an artist to own it. It's still a good book to go next to reprint collections of GOOD Marvel and DC Comics storylines. As a how-to book for aspiring comic book artists (or people who just like Marvel art in raw form), it hasn't been surpassed or equalled...

We truly live in a world too stupidly cynic to admire or admit the greatness of the ones that came before us. Im not even an artist, i study architecture, but this video makes me mad at myself for not aiming to be good and then better, and then mad at the postmodern mess the people live in today that even comic "pros" are mostly hacks that don't want to master their arts and crafts. And yet i also feel happy to see something genuinely good that makes you exited and inspire you to do more.

Omg, I had this book as a kid and thought the exact same thing, “Nobody would draw a comic like THAT.” It’s odd to me that Marvel artists don’t have to read their own book. Even Deodato, who is a fantastic artist, but his stuff just looks so stiff now. I really miss people actually drawing ish... Btw, how many covers have we seen where the character is drawn from the back?

All of that stuff about proportion is absolutely true. It's really obvious when you look at older marvel comics and newer marvel comics. I used to rent the video version of this from Blockbuster all the time and just listen over and over so the lessons of this book are drilled into my head. I recently made a video about Rob Liefeld, and in that video, i did a lot of talk about heroic proportion and the concept of comic book characters and actions being exaggerated for a reason.

I’m going to contradict you, Zack. The great Stan Drake used Polaroids and an Art-o-graph projector when he did the The Heart Of Juliet Jones in the 50s and 60s, tracing the photos to help make his expressions look realistic. Using photos in the old days didn’t hamper one’s art, it enhanced it. The old artists embellished any traced photos and made the whole look better, unlike today’s artists.

Art has gotten SO bad at Marvel because the lessons in it have seemingly been forgotten. In my youth, I spent countless hours with it while dreaming of being a comics artist. It's priceless.

This is probably the best book you could ever get as a starting point for comic style drawing. The temptation is to make every panel a Da Vinci or as photographic as you can get it, you will never be commercially viable if you do this. You need to be able to draw and express quickly and effectively in a way that conveys the story. I have never read a greater collection of pointers than in this book. I had this book 20 years ago and can't recommend it highly enough. PS: Please excuse me from the giveaway, I copied it page for page years ago :)

My parents got me this book back when I was just starting to draw comic style stuff, I think I was 10 or 11. I didnt absorb most of the drawing stuff completely right- yknow how a lot of kids will just look for line-by-line tutorials instead of taking the concept/broad strokes to heart? This was basically that. I would overthink it. BUT- This hammered home one main thing for me: if you make anything, really put your gut into it. Pushing the gesture, making the composition more dramatic, good perspective... You get the idea. I always make several thumbnails of everything I do so I can push it further each time. I think I heard in a documentary once that Stan used to get up on the artists’ table at the office and act out the poses, “no, see? hes gotta punch like /that!/“ and just.. you could tell they gave a damn. No- that’s wrong.. They gave their all. Stan may’ve been cheesy sometimes, but at least it was tongue-in-cheek, and he sure as hell knew what he was doing. Otherwise we wouldnt have spidey, among others. It’s funny... Recently I’ve had to balance things, and learn to dial it back a bit for less extreme scenes. I think I got closed-minded and lost a lot of versatility because of it. Anyway... Great book.
