With the release of Half-Life: Alyx, a new generation of virtual reality flavored PC modding is about to unravel and if you're anything like me... You want to know where to start. This is an incredibly simplistic guide on how to get a very basic enviroment functioning inside Half-Life: Alyx.
Modders & tool builders are working endlessly to streamline this process, but as of now, this is the quickest way to experience custom content.

I used to make maps for source 1 way back in 2004-2007 on the hl2world forums. I haven't touched source engine since but this horde game mode being made is really tempting me to jump back in and try it out again. Thanks for the basic setup tutorial, time to dive into a rabbit hole of the hammer editor. (again) :D P.S. I think i still have ptsd from the source 1 lighting compiler.... xD

My biggest issue has been a lack of navigation mesh. There seems to be no way to build one yet so most NPCs can not move. I hope the official Hammer for Alyx comes out soon but for now, I'll keep messing with the SteamVR one.

@@anselme198 I have seen working navigation on the HLA Modding Discord. It requires about 60 GBs to unpack and copy the game files but their custom Hammer FGD does work!

Thank you very much, i really need stuff like this to get me started. When you were placing the lighting in the seen, you said to make sure everything will work to bake the lighting in. What does baking the lighting mean? What would or could have gone wrong if you did not bake the lighting afterwords?

Do you know why it's not possible to simply use the prop-browser? I thought the asset pack meant to be all the things we see in the environment to be placed by ourselves.. :/ there's not a single prob from HL:A in my editor..

You're looking for a FGD. The asset pack was just a few textures and props that Valve made public. If you join the discord and go to guides, you'll find a FGD + instructions.

@@phord3913 Looks like you're using a model outside of the asset pack. If you join the Discord, someone has made a full FGD asset library you can pull into your dependency folder. It's a bit tricky though!
