Freezing your bag of rice as soon as you bring it home from the store and leaving it in the freezer for at least four days will kill the adult bugs and possibly their eggs. (freezer time may vary upon the research you do) It’s your personal choice what you fill your gnomes with. Just have fun making them!

You can also mix some food-grade diatomaceous earth in with the rice and it will kill any type of bugs and their eggs. It is non-toxic and I use it all the time. If it is windy, I cover my mouth when applying it because it is a fine powder. Also, I mix it with water and use it as a spray.

I watched a gazillion of these “how to make a gnome“ videos and yours is the first one that has ever emphasize the need to reinforce the rubber band, and you do it without using hot glue! You make a perfect example/argument for why you do this and you were absolutely correct, the rubber band will the grain, and glue will harden so that won’t necessarily work. Tying a string is ingenious!

This is an excellent project for those of us who are on a tight budget. I know that she said that the faux fur is expensive, but you could find it at a thrift store. Either as part of something else, or in the spot where they have bits and pieces of material etc., also the socks, as well as other items that you may not have on hand. Sometimes it's possible to find these items brand new, still in the original packaging, for a fraction of the original price! Taking advantage of the dollar stores is an excellent idea too. You can add things like feet, spectacles, as well as creating girl gnomes by putting hair in the back, to start with, or maybe make a couple of yarn braids (also taking advantage of the thrift store for materials). I enjoyed this tutorial, helped me get into the holiday spirit a little bit! May your Holidays be as good as they possibly can for all of us, this has been a difficult year for all people no matter what you believe! 🙋♥️🏵️🌾🍂🍁🍂🌾🏵️✌🏾💪🏾😷☯️

Started making these for this Christmas. Very easy to make. I did use wood noses and less beard to show the shirt underneath. Also glued them to a wood slice so they stand up forever. I used my own old white socks! Four cups of rice was perfect. Had to order the little rubber bands from Amazon, but they really work great. Added the jingle bell and I am really pleased with how they turned out. Again, her directions are easy to follow and you can keep the cost down by making the beards a little smaller.

Looks like fun. Clever how the heel becomes the pom pom on the hat. Stuff the remainders of socks for pet toys. I work at a fabric store and fur is hard to cut so you don't give it a hair cut. Sometimes I have been able to cut the selvedge and tear it straight but sometimes it tears at an angle. I tried cutting through the back and sometimes that doesn't work. If I have time to part the fur, that helps.

These little guys are adorable! One great point on Miriam's video - her voice is really nice. Many times in crafting videos, the women talk too loudly or have an unbearable accent - Miriam just seems like someone I'd like to be friends with. Thanks for this adorable idea! -- You could add little wire-rim glasses over his nose made from a large paper clip. :)

Unbearable accent sounds very racist

Plastic poly pellets may be a much better option than the suggested rice, or as mentioned by others in this comments section - pea gravel, kitty litter, flour/cornmeal, or beans. No dust or bugs from the poly pellets! It also provides weight to the gnome. If/when price is a concern (these poly pellets are slightly costly), (1) use discount programs &/or coupons to buy a bag of the pellets from JoAnn or hobby store, (2) use a combination of the poly pellets and the Styrofoam beads/pellets used for bean bag chairs... (use the poly pellets in the bottom third and the styro beads for the remaining 2/3 of the "body" of the gnome), (3) use loose batting to fill a portion of the "body" and stuff it down in the middle of the beads/pellets. Another suggestion: if poly pellets are more $$ than you wish to expend on this project, but you still want to use a weighted filler, and you want to use the Styrofoam beads instead, consider buying (from a hardware store) some large washers or large nuts to place in the base of the "body" sock before or after adding a bit of the beads.

Kitty litter or pea gravel are great suggestions! 4 cups of rice per gnome is a lot!
