@@Rybonator if you still have the ebony one, lightly sand the gold leaf/ebony one and it will make a shoshuginban-ish look while removing excess gold leaf. a soft brass brush will do the same but leaving the harder grain less effected while the soft lower grain will rub off faster.

I did a little gold leafing on a picture frame for my mother one Christmas, it's pretty tough. The key I found was to use a tiny dremmel for the grooves of the leafing. Once the leafing was in place and glued, I used a very fine grain sand paper to remove the little excess that was left. You'd think the staining would come off, but as long as you're gentle it works pretty well. The walnut box still turned out great though. You should give gunstock a try next time. It's just like the walnut but a bit of an orange tone to it. I would also recommend using a pre-stain on the wood to avoid any smudging or irregularities in the stain. :)

From a person who attends an art school and has to deal with gold leaf very often, I suggest you to be patient and to wait a good amount of hours before applying it, otherwise it will stick to the box and never go away, even if you don't put the glue everywhere. Sometimes it's the color that is quite sticky (I use oil colors and have to wait days until it's completely dry). Anyway I think you should be proud of what you accomplished, I love all your works and remember there is always room for improvement :)

This is brilliant! I need to go buy a wood burning tool and find a box like this at my craft store, it’s EXACTLY what I need for D&D! Everyone lives locally in Philly, but I’m an hour south in Delaware and have been looking for something like this for my dice and minis. If I find a similar box, I’ll be picking up some ebony stain and gold leaf, too! That idea has so much potential.

I was delighted when this showed up in my in box. Sorry, couldn't resist myself. Really liked how that ebony box was going. Also I know some might want to protect the stain and graphic work by sealing the wood but I think the natural wear and tear from its use would allow it to develop a natural aged look over time, like it had really been on all those adventures

The cardboard is a great idea! I used a rubbery shelf liner on my last one and its soooo much easier than gluing the felt directly into the box. If you use a brush for the stain, let it sit for a few minutes (if you want it nice and dark), then wipe off the excess with some scrap of a t-shirt or a paper towel, that will hide the brush strokes. I used to stain cabinet pieces and we used the worst, cheapest brushes you could get from the hardware store, but when you wipe it off it hides the crimes.

Tip on a cleaner velvet insert: instead of cutting tiny squares, cut at a 45 (135) degree angle just a tiny bit beyond the corner and the edges will bend up and meet instead of overlapping. For extra dampening, throw a layer of craft foam between the velvet and cardboard. With foil, always give anything wet (especially if it’s sticky, like stain) extra time to dry. Then snag a paper towel and rub over the surface to remove any excess that might linger. And honestly, I usually work with a square inch or so at a time to get the cleanest results. Foil looks amazing but can be a PitA. 🤭

Those are really neat. Very well done. And like many have mentioned, the ebony is totally still "save-able" (tho thats assuming its a failure, which i think it wasnt. U learnt how to do better next time, and honestly its still cool). Also as someone who fiddles with any type of craft or hands on project i can, which lead to too many hobbies, and as someone whose done alittle leafing, two things i noticed. 1:if possible you may wanna try smaller sections at a time, less wasteful (tho thats beside the point), easier to correct errors as you go, and with a small amount of practice you really cant notice any "seam" lines without knowing where to look (super duper soft brush is key like you did). 2: since i didnt see "water based" plainly labeled on that Minwax, im gonna assume that type was oil based (even tho theyve been out for years and ive seen em online i havent seen those particular cans on my local store shelves yet) and likely the box wasn't dry. Typically u wanna stain it and let it set for a handful of minutes and wipe off the excess buildup. Helps with more uniform finish. As does a prestain conditioner. Those oil stains can take days even a couple weeks (if over applied) to fully cure. Be sure to keep that in mind if you ever top coat/clear coat over a stain. Likely the leaf stuck to the uncured oils. But a light sanding,scrubbing, scrapping can fix that. I love these dice related builds, mold making, and custom dice creation vids. Great work and please keep em coming
@Rybonator
@Rybonator 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the write up :) I was unaware of the stain being oil based. If I had known, I probably would have been a bit more careful with the gold! Next time I'll try the small sections as well as wiping the stain excess away. (I didn't do this initially, as I liked the SUPER dark look of leaving it on there. My mistake haha.) I'll keep em coming if you keep watching :) Thanks for sticking around!

If you still have the black one, you could in theory 3d print a flat goblin, paint it and glue it to the top of the box to cover the gold leaf. On that same notion, you could then cast it and make flat resin goblins and turn them into coasters.

Throw two coats of finish on that bad boy, sand it down with some 800 grit paper then one more coat. The shine will be super clean looking, i did this almost exact same process. Also gold leaf is a pain in the ass!

Gloss poly, allowed to fully cure before gold leaf adhesive should help the leaf not stick where you don't want it. After the leaf is down you'll need another coat of poly, this could be gloss again, but doesn't have to be and you can use whatever other finish you want for these final top coats.

Great little project. Staining tip. Next time wipe on wipe off after about a min or so. Use a rag instead of a brush if you can do fine detail by hand. Apply a second coat. Your staining wont look so blotchy next time.

Nice box. For the goldleaf ebony box, maybe you can try a light sanding to remove the gold, as the burned lines are lower, it might keep the gold. So at least worth a try to safe it. And for the insert, corks and eva foam are also pretty nice, the cardboard which I also used in the past, has one issue, it dents over timer. Cork with leather or a nice fabric is my favorite as its not getting fuzzy like the felt. But the look is great, I like the dark wood with black.
@Rybonator
@Rybonator 4 жыл бұрын
I tried the light sanding, but the grooves were just not deep enough sadly. OR if they were, the adhesive bulged out enough when dried to render it a moot point. I show off the results in my latest video. It's pretty sad looking haha. Those are great tips! I hadn't thought about cork under the felt material, or leather. I might have to give that a go in a future attempt :) I planned on trying some craft foam with leather, but the cork would be an excellent sound dampener. Glad you like it my Die! :)
@wuerfel_schmied
@wuerfel_schmied 4 жыл бұрын
@@Rybonator that's a bummer eith the sanding. But you could sand everything and start over again. You can ask in home depot or so for cork tiles. Maybe you get some samples. Some are also structured and you could use them directly. Or there is stuff for pinwalls.

What I'm about to suggest may make the black and gold box worse, but if it's already a bust it might be worth a try: buff over the top with some steel wool. Should be fine enough not to shrek your box and the extra leaf, but it will take the leafing off the high spots

I liked the ebony before the leafing. Could you use a razor blade or xacto knife to scrape the leaf out? I know it might scratch the finish. Maybe a bone scraper? Still helps to see the experts make mistakes so we can feel ok about ours. I try to look at mistakes as " well here is a way not to do that". I may still curse and grumble but I get over it.

two quick things: Im gunna say this every time i see the logo but merch when? and also if you use a laser printer to print out your image you can transfer it directly onto a piece of wood. Hey!! So I'm looking to make my husband a dice box for his birthday but had a question for you. If I want to stain the box and do some wood burner/pyrography (wte its called lol) which should I do first? Thinking of doing some sort of geometric design and not adding color like you did for your goblin (which btw is adorable and now need to do for my goblin character =P) and I'm just afraid of making this dope design and then staining over it and it ruins the whole thing or vice versa. What would you recommend? (Newbie to this 🤷‍♀️)

As a thought, if you took the gilded lid and gently buffed it on some very fine sandpaper, would that take the excess off and leave some gilding in the pyrography divots? You might need to touch up the ebony stain a little afterwards, but it might work if you're careful. (edit for clarity)

I know this is late, but a rag works even better than the sponge for staining. And if you use an old sock with some holes that needed to be thrown out anyway, you're just letting it be useful one last time. And then you toss it in the garbage because there's no way you're getting the stain out.
