I’ve been making soap for YEARS but for some reason I had it in my head that making lotion was difficult, expensive, time consuming, or needed a lot of chemicals I didn’t have access to. (Coming from a soaper! Hah!) I made this lotion last night and Marie. MARIE. I am in love. Addicted. Thank you so much for making lotion-making and DIY so accessible for us. Gonna go slather on some more of this!

YAY! I'm so thrilled :D Once you're comfortable with soap most things should be pretty simple (and inexpensive-no lotion eats EOs like soap does!) in comparison-welcome to the lotion-y wonderland!

Hiya, I have just finished making this lotion - only altered the essential oils and I put in less. It’s very light but moisturising which is great. Only thing I was hesitant about was the preservative. I used Phenoxyethanol liquid. I measured out one gram but it seemed a lot so I just used a 1/4 tsp ... any comments on this?? I would like to know what this would look like if there is any mould or bacteria growing so I know to stop using. Thanks for posting this 😊

Hi Marie. I enjoy your videos very much. I like your choices of oils and fragrances and the simple straightforward instructions. I also enjoy your cheery personality and hearing tidbits about wondrous Canada. Thank you so much for your efforts! I would also like to see you use some natural botanical colorants every now and then. Just a dab of spirulina or turmeric or beef powder to throw another dimension into the mix. Beautiful! Thanks again.
@HumblebeeAndMe
@HumblebeeAndMe 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks so much for watching! I rarely use botanical colours (and never beef powder! I'm vegetarian and that is one weird thing to put in anything... especially for colour lol. Why wouldn't you use any of the other multitudes of brown things that won't attract a ton of bacteria?). They are pretty weak and oxidize quickly in the presence of water, giving you brown or grey after a couple weeks. They also make products harder to preserve, so if I am including an ingredient solely for colour, I typically choose a pigment or mica (though soap is a slightly different story and a whole different can of worms!). Check out this video (kzbin.info/www/bejne/rGq7hX-ej6ulipI) to see some of that in action :)

Marie, thanks so much for sharing this beautiful recipe! Quick question: how long does liquid germall plus usually preserve the lotion? I've been searching for whole couple days yet haven't find any convincing answer. Thank you!:)
@HumblebeeAndMe
@HumblebeeAndMe 4 жыл бұрын
I've had lotions preserved with Liquid Germall Plus (INCI: Propylene Glycol, Diazolidinyl Urea, Iodopropynyl Butylcarbamate) last upwards of 4 years-and after that they still haven't spoiled, but sometimes have gone rancid or I'll just chuck it 'cause it's been 4 years :) So, in short, it works really well! I still have this exact cream I made in this video and it's still fine!

Marie, thank you so much for sharing. I love your videos and recipes. I had created some of your recipe, cause my mom have sensitive skin. From soap to shampoo, I make it my self for her and entire family. I feel safe use my own products. I want to try make this lotion too. I have everything except glycerin (that's weird eh). If I want to buy it, it has to be 500gr here in my country. Less than that, is so expensive. I wonder if I can make lotion without it? Or maybe substitute it with another oil?
@HumblebeeAndMe
@HumblebeeAndMe 5 жыл бұрын
Honestly, glycerin is so incredibly useful and lasts a long time that I would just get the 500g. Otherwise, you'll find many substitution suggestions in the Humblebee & Me Encyclopedia at www.humblebeeandme.com/diy-encyclopedia. Simply look up the ingredients in question to learn about why they are used in formulas, what they do, usage rates, and more. Happy making!

Hi thanks for sharing such a great recipe...quick question what is the shelf life of this product nd can i use phenoxethol instead of grrman plus???
@HumblebeeAndMe
@HumblebeeAndMe 7 жыл бұрын
For shelf life, read this: www.humblebeeandme.com/faqs/long-will-______-last-shelf-life/. Do you mean "Phenoxyethanol"? Phenoxyethanol is not a complete/broad-spectrum preservative, so it is not recommended at all unless as part of a complete broad-spectrum preservative (it can be found in many preservative blends). There's lots of great information here: www.makingskincare.com/preservatives/.

Hey Pam! Do you have the INCI of that emulsifying wax? If it's complete it'll work :) Also, if you check the link in the description box there's an alternative to making this with oats instead of colloidal oatmeal, and the silk is optional... so yo umight be able to make it today!

Hey Queen Bee 😎 just says it's a 'vegetable based wax, and may be used as a medium within cosmetics to help bind water & oil, adding a smooth consistency to finished products". Not sure if I can say who I bought it from.

Hmm... that's not terribly promising :/ That "may" is a bit suspicious! Have you successfully used it in lotions before without a co-emulsifier? There are "emulsifying waxes" for sale that are incomplete, which is silly and misleading.

@HumblebeeAndMe
@HumblebeeAndMe 8 жыл бұрын
Thanks, George! Aloe straight from the plant is difficult to use in lotions and what not as it'll drastically decrease the shelf life of whatever you use it in, even with a preservative, because it's super delicious bacteria food. You can puree the pulp with some water, strain it, and use it as part of the water part of and of my lotion recipes, just be sure to include a preservative and make it in small batches so you'll use it up fast :)

This is such a wonderful soothing lotion. The first time i made it, i bought what said colloidal oatmeal from my health foods store and it must have not been sifted correctly, or they were just ground up oats and i had a very chunky or gritty lotion.lol it still left my skin feeling nice.lol i ended up turning it into a in shower lotion and re made a batch with actual colloidal oatmeal.lol anyhow, I had a question. So a just got this lotion kit my husband thought I'd like and in the kit, they have potassium sorbate and citric acid to use as the preservative, and i am a bit worried it might not be effective enough. although I have seen this in a ton of commercial products and know its a food grade preservative. But is it really effective enough to preserve a homemade lotion? curious to get your input on the matter. would be pretty awesome if it is because ive got a big ol' bag of it and have always had a ton of citric acid in my house.
@HumblebeeAndMe
@HumblebeeAndMe 7 жыл бұрын
Hmm-I wonder if food grade colloidal oatmeal differs from cosmetic grade in terms of the mesh? It's definitely a bit funny that you ended up with a lumpy lotion, though not at all ideal! I would agree that potassium sorbate and citric acid are not going to be sufficient; do a search for it on this page: www.makingskincare.com/preservatives/. You'll see it is part of many preservatives, but not a preservative on its own! The citric acid is just for buffering the pH, it has no preservative abilities on its own.

Hi Marie! Could you make a cream recipe with Shea butter and oats for the skin? I don’t know what the proportions would be, how to store it and if those just 2 ingredients are enough. I just made this lotion, my first lotion ever! And my impressions are: the consistency and absorption are excellent, it's a far superior lotion than the ones available at the supermarket, keeps my dry skin hydrated. But for me the smell was too intoxicating, I think less chamomile essential oil would be better, did somebody else out there felt that 12 drops of it just took over the whole thing? Besides, I wanted to add some color to it and then I added 1/8 tsp of purple mica by TKB Trading (the one called Aster Hu), but guess what? It made it kind of grey, like a clay color. Why do you think that happened? It has to do with the color of the olive oil or cocoa butter? the color was kind of beige before I added the mica. You can tell I know nothing about colorants since I thought it would be so simple as to put some mica into it and have the final color just like the mica color. Any thoughts on that, please? Thank you for the recipe, I'll remake it for sure.
@HumblebeeAndMe
@HumblebeeAndMe 6 жыл бұрын
Beige + a small amount of pale purple will give you a coolish grey, which is right in line with what happened :) You could try a punchier purple, or try using more. In a lotion that is more white you won't get that added yellow note and the purple will be "cleaner" :)

Thank you for the video! But why can't we use beeswax as an emulsifier. I have seen several tutorials where people have. Why is that? Will those lotions separate sooner? Thank you!
@HumblebeeAndMe
@HumblebeeAndMe 7 жыл бұрын
Hey! Well, first and foremost, one cannot use beeswax as an emulsifier because it isn't an emulsifier-not by itself, at least. When combined with borax in very specific recipes + techniques it will work, but those lotions tend to be more like waxy cold creams than the types of lotions we are used to as they require a higher oil/butter percentage than lotions made with emulsifying wax. I made a video to show you what would happen if you use beeswax instead of ewax in a recipe designed to use ewax here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/gpKYZ2xto8yVbq8. If you want to make lotion with beeswax instead of ewax, this recipe will work: www.humblebeeandme.com/diy-lotion/. If you compare the process and the ratios between the two, you'll see how they are different :)

Hey Liz! Because I'm not selling anything, "clean" as it cleaned with detergent + hot water, and then air dried, is good enough for me, especially since we're doing heat-and-hold and including a preservative. If you were planning on selling anything I would highly recommend a 5% bleach rinse :)

+ Humblebee & Me thank you for the vids :) looking for a more specific suggestion that I am hoping you can help with! my favorite lotion until I learned that oil based chems are not great was aveeno daily moisturizing lotion. have you used it? the unique thing about it is the only thing i've found the really absorbs into, protects, and heals your skin w/out clogging pores (even on face). as in, if you rinse your hands 30 minutes later, there is no slime or residue left over. is there anything in your natural world that mimics this more closely? for example the shea/coconut oil based lotions i've used simply dry on the surface of your skin, but never seem to really absorb in. i'm hoping this question makes sense. thank you again!
@HumblebeeAndMe
@HumblebeeAndMe 6 жыл бұрын
Hey! So, with a commercial product like that (I haven't tried it), there's probably dozens of ingredients, all working together synergistically to create the experience/feel/etc. of that product, so it's impossible to say that one or two ingredients are key. From what you're talking about ("oil based lotion") it sounds like you aren't using lotions at all, just pure oils? It's not a lotion if there's no emulsion with water. Have you tried making a simple emulsified lotion (like this: kzbin.info/www/bejne/bHyug2p6lLCBqpY)? They will be much lighter, much faster to absorb, and much less greasy than covering yourself in shea butter or coconut oil, both of which are known for being very greasy, slow to absorb oils. True lotions are mostly water, so they are always much lighter and sink into the skin beautifully :)
@zakdigital
@zakdigital 6 жыл бұрын
Sorry I should have been more clear: "petroleum based lotion" :o Was just wondering if there was a specific type/mix that you have (butter, lotion, balm, milk, etc) that would absorb more than your other recipes, but it sounds like your basic lotion is a good start. Thank you again :)
