How Come 19 points at the master tune is an octave? I thought its 12 semitones
@DNBAcademy4 жыл бұрын
Great question! 12 semitones is an octave but in serum matrix it seems that 1 octave is around 9 or 10 points and 2 octaves is around 19 points. Not sure why Steve Duda made the algorithm this way. Test it out for yourself to see!

1. Great Tutorial! 2. Did you prepare the automation in advance? I guess so? 3. How would you categorize this kind/style of bass in terms of "Gnarly", "Wobble", "Reese", "Rumble", "Roller" etc.? 4. I don't have a Parallel Processing effect in my Ableton. Which version are you using? 11? 5. My OTTs cut off a lot of wobble action, your OTTs seem to give your sound more strength. I wish I understood why...
@basho5493 Жыл бұрын
Hi, since noone has responded yet, here's my 2 cents: 1. Agreed! 2. He draws the filter cut off automation after applying the filter and fx in serum - as the filter cut off is what is shaping the sound. It looks prepared in advance because probably doesnt want to make us sit through automation drawing. You'd probably draw these in as you go, while shaping the sound and while touching it up. Essentially, in this case, youre first filling the frequency spectrum with harmonics (via FM + distortion) and selecting which ones to let through with the bandpass filter. Therefore, without the initial block of sound to carve from, if preparing automation in advance before the patch, might have less clear idea of what values to set/draw because probably determine them by ear usually. 3. This is an FM bass in terms of the method of synthesis - but could be used for anything dnb related in terms of subgenre. Reese is another specific type of bass/sound obtained by detuning 2 waveforms, classically using 2 saw waves. You can certainly modulate the filter cut off on a reese too as it is shown here. If youre into making basses, instead of those keywords, what helped me alot was looking into basics of sound synthesis like FM, wavetable, subtractive etc - which helped me understand these tutorials on youtube a bit better. Also being super intimate with LFOs/envelopes + drawing curves (and having an idea of what parameters to assign these to e.g. filter cut offs, fm depth, distortion amount, wet/dry) so you can picture what you might need graphically for whatever sound is in your head or where to go while experimenting. 4. The parallell processing unit is actually an Audio Effect Rack (stock plugin in ableton) that's been renamed "parallel processing". Load an audio effect rack and right click in the box to create chains, you can then insert fx into each chain so you have parallel affected signals side by side with the dry. 5. Not sure, but it could be because the wet/dry amount on the 3 OTTs is at 64% and the Time set to 1000%. When you initially drag the OTT in, it is set at 100% wet/dry and 100% Time instead. The Time knob affects the attack/release of the compressor so it could be these settings messing things up. I'm still a beginner, but hope that helps!

Lost me at the automation for the filter cut off, I am in FL and just clicking the cutoff doesn't bring up any kind of options for automation or anything really. What can I do at this point? Seems like automating the EQ is a really important step XD

Hi I might have misunderstood, but you EQ'ed and cut everything under 100Hz, but I can still hear the low end when you play the demo track at the end, did you use a different sub bass for this? Thanks!
@osmark862 жыл бұрын
I'm pretty sure he did, which is slightly misleading
@nataskunas2 жыл бұрын
@@osmark86 seems like he didn't said anything in the video and added a second layer of sub bass, that gives the lowest end of the sound. Seemed weird for him to jump from one sound to a full bass like that's the only steps you need to do. I find it quite often in youtube 'producers' giving their secrets, is showing only part of the sound design (a very popular strategy in these videos i found is to make a sound and then add a custom made effects chain/preset that suddenly changes everything, without explanations)

Whenever I try to follow along to any of these Serum tutorials my sound is never the same as the persons that is teaching. I'm hoping someone could explain to me what I might be doing differently. My Serum settings are the exact same as the videos but I'm wondering if it has to do with a setting on the video creators midi keyboard. I am always able to make something but its not the same as in the tutorial.

12 semitones is an octave for a regular pitch algorithm. The point system in the Serum Matrix does not follow a regular pitch algorithm. Actually It’s a custom algorithm and you can use a sinewave and test for yourself to see that 19 points is around 2 octaves.
