I'm the son of a South African butcher, and I think your video is absolutely spot on, from pronunciation to presentation! You even bypassed a biltong dryer box by hanging it up like laundry on, of all things, a wire coat hanger. You obviously don't get many flies where you are. We could never do that at home in SA, especially in the summer! Quite fascinating, that.

Thanks for educating people on what is also my fave snack. Instead of just vinegar I use the same volume of liquid, but it's 1/3 malt vinegar, 1/3 Worcestershire and 1/3 brandy. Don't think the Voortrekkers had Worcestershire but it's a tasty twist!

I don't cook mine. Use a high quality meal you don't mind eating raw! You CAN bake it after it's dry at 150f for 20 minutes or so if you're worried about it, but it may change the texture a little.

I’m kind of surprised you don’t actually cook the meat. How does that work? I know you dried them🤔.Beef jerky is cooked at a low heat right ? I kind of always forget my kitchen aid mixer does more than mix, but I see it doesn’t work well in these. These do look yummy!!
@Passionforfoodrecipes2 жыл бұрын
Well all the modern day jerky and dried meats you can get in stores have been cooked to at least 180F "for our safety"! But back in the old world that wasn't the case, and actually uncooked raw meat is generally fine to eat (steak tartar) just so long as the meats good quality (sushi etc). And once it's dry you don't have to worry about it spoiling which was the whole idea back when! 😁

@@Passionforfoodrecipes Huge difference between boerewors and droewors. Crazy and dangerous to hang boerewors to dry for 5 days - it can go rotten and a good chance of contracting botulism.

@@nieladmin9120 Just not true. Quit making up nonsense Niel. I've made this recipe for 20+ years this way, eating 100s of lbs of it., as have my parents and grandparents. There is room to worry about eating any raw meat though, the government says you should cook all of it to at least 165F or whatever it is, and if you're that scared maybe you should.
@mrmelkor1 Жыл бұрын
@@nieladmin9120 there IS a huge difference, about 50-60% water weight. droewors is the DRIED version of boerwors, you crank. The salt, vinegar, and lack of moisture prevent bacterial growth. it's the whole point of these old world preservation methods and why they were populator with the south African settlers back when.
@nieladmin9120 Жыл бұрын
@@Passionforfoodrecipes Graham, I dont care what and how much you eat. Maybe you sould do some research before you pollute people with your recipe of "kakwors". Traditional boerewors is two parts beef, one part pork and half a part fat (pork fat diced into small cubes) - "spekwors". Traditional Droëwors is 100% beef. Pork and fat to be replaced by (skaapstert) fat from sheep's tail. Note: "Boerewors does not keep well unrefrigerated." - Wikipedia. Ask and I'll mail you a kickass boerewors recipe that'll blow your mind, parents and grandparents included. Maybe you can do a second take and celebrate real traditional boerewors with friens, family and viewers.
