Hey, everyone! It’s been brought to my attention that there’s quite a bit of concern over safety on this project. We decided to do a video discussing wood toxicity and the safety of wood finish. Feel free to check it out and join the discussion with us! kzbin.info/www/bejne/mWOkaoBsp6uVqrs

I have an old tree at my house that is getting taken down in about a week. My childhood swing set was there, all 4 of my dogs and my goldfish is under the tree, and it's really sad for me to lose it. Thank you so much for showing me a way to preserve my memories and make something so special and unique🖤 much appreciation.

I ain’t gonna lie, I saw a comment pop up on this particular video and felt that little sense of dread, only to see an awesome story. I’m glad that you’ll be able to preserve a part of that tree that carries so many precious moments.

Just being picky at this point but they are called plugs when they are solid tunnels when there's a hole in the middle and saddles when they only sit in the bottom like a horse saddle this is an awesome video either way keep in mind to measure the length of the plugs too not just gauge size to make sure the plugs aren't too long now I need to make myself some plugs... oh and certain woods cause allergic reactions too.

Great craftsmanship... with that said those will donk most peoples ears up pretty bad with the wood glue, those wood types, and the lacquer... don't recreate these as is guys. Maybe try covering them in a food grade non toxic epoxy resin if you want to use these materials.

Imagine being a purist like this, it's just stretched ears. Who fucking cares what they're called. Stop making the community look bad, can't stand people that act like this. It's just a simple umbrella term to most people.

What is the machine you use to cut out the circle
@MeansWoodshop5 жыл бұрын
I used a scroll saw. I’d probably use a bandsaw now, but it did a pretty good job.
@urbangrifos4695 жыл бұрын
@@MeansWoodshop thanks man and why is that i may ask
@MeansWoodshop5 жыл бұрын
The scrollsaw work especially well for something like this, but mine is super old and has a hard time cutting through denser material. So my bandsaw would be preferable.

Anyone know how different finishes hold up/feel in an ear (a friend wants a set)? I use alumiuv on the outside of my rings for the durability and look but idk how it would feel in an ear. I’m thinking boiled linseed oil for the feel and I think it would hold up to the oils of the ear but if AlumiUV or polyurethane feels just as good, I’d like to go with the alumiuv.

I came to the comments only to see how many people are triggered by someone using the word "gauges" instead of plugs. I wasn't disappointed. I also don't understand why it irritates people so much. We all know it's not the correct terminology but who cares? If people want to call them gauges, let them call them gauges 🤷♀️
@MeansWoodshop5 жыл бұрын
Thanks, Sara! I usually don’t address those comments and have since learned DO NOT call them gauges! Since I don’t have any and I made them for my brother, I just thought that’s what they were called.
@Sara-gl8ue5 жыл бұрын
@@MeansWoodshop I never call them gauges either. I just find it odd that so many people get offended when they're called that, lol.
@MeansWoodshop5 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I was a little taken aback, but I just didn’t know. Either way, if by chance you’re interested, me and my brother talk about this very thing briefly in this video kzbin.info/www/bejne/hISTc2hreq5mjbs
@illmannered14 жыл бұрын
It's like calling shoes "sizes" or bottles of water "ounces", you're free to do it, but it just makes you look like an idiot. Gauge is a unit of measurement. If you go to a hardware store and ask for a set of "millimeters" when you want sockets and you're the tenth person who's done it that day you're likely going to trigger someone, and rightfully so.
@sphereslip2 жыл бұрын
Professional piercers call them plugs or eyelets. "Gauge" is only referred to to size.

I’d be careful with these, both of these woods can be irritants in your ears. You wouldn’t find many reputable shops carrying poplar or walnut plugs because of that

I've seen walnut a lot actually, not poplar at all though.
