Pro tips. For those that don't have colour printer, but black/white. Like me. Make/Get images that are simply line art. Do the steps. Then when it's printed colour them with pencils, markers or even crayons. Whatever you have, i like pencils myself. If one realizes the main problem with paper minis, namely the dreaded wind elementals, air gust attacks or fart deamons. There's a simple fix. Got to a hardware store. Get washers. Washers come in large amounts and are cheap. Then glue one to the bottom of each mini, or into the folded area if you want to hide them. Gives the paper cutouts some weight to them, which is nice. I however am already into miniatures and have a bunch of them, but i find the paper cutouts nice and cute. Great vid. I'd love more maps!

Thank you so much for the tutorial!! I didn't have time to order minis for a oneshot I am DMing, but wanted something visually cool to put on the table. This helped me figure out how to format things on the computer side, so that I could draw the characters and bam! Now I have really cool paper minis!

4 years late, but pro tip I learned from Adam Savage videos: Don't try to cut through on your first pass. You're more likely to mess up and slip if you're putting to much pressure. It's better to lightly score the paper on the first pass, then just keep repeating along that same line until you get through. Also, if you mess up on that first scoring line, it's just a score/scratch and you haven't cut through. You can use a metal ruler if you're worried about being straight when repeating the same line, but most of the time your initial scoring line should help guide the other passes. But yeah, lighter allows you to be more accurate and safer.

Hey. I love these miniature ideas that you are making. I have made stuff like that too. Just a tip though, apart from making the resolution 300dpi, the colour mode must also change from RGB to CMYK for colour accuracy, as RGB is for web which has more colours than CMYK. If you print an RGB artwork on a printer, the printer will change it to CMYK , dulling the colour if it is beyond printer colour spectrum.
@JPCoovert5 жыл бұрын
You're totally right. Not sure I talked about it in this video, but the color palette I use is CMYK safe, so it prints the same in whichever mode.

You have to lock the transparency of the layer (select the layer, then click on the little checkered box at the top left of the layers palette) then fill with the light blue color (alt+backspace)

I really love this style of paper miniatures! LIke you said, they're a lot easier to handle than 3d minis if you're just starting out (or have limited storage). One idea based on my experience using paper minis. I like cutting out squares of chipboard to glue to the bases to give them a little more heft and balance. Cardstock is definitely sturdy on its own, but I just like the weight on the bottom. I imagine something like pennies or washers would work too. Also, a while ago I saw a video by Kelsey Dionne about her GMing set up (kzbin.info/www/bejne/roivhn2Pob6so7M), and she uses a business card holder with plastic sleeves to hold her flat plastic minis. I haven't tried it personally, but I imagine this would be a good way of storing and organizing paper minis as well. Again, awesome video JP. Love to see how folks approach their games. Hope you don't mind my yakking.
@JPCoovert5 жыл бұрын
Yes! I thought I was going to need to put some sort of extra weight in these, but using card stock and having it double up on the bottom makes them quite sturdy. The intention is to keep the assembly SUPER simple too. That video is awesome! I'll have to show off my DM set up sometime! I use collectible coin and card sleeves to store all my minis in a 3 ring binder.
@JPCoovert5 жыл бұрын
Also! We gotta hang out sometime and play some gamesssss!
@jraineyesq5 жыл бұрын
Nice. I don't GM enough to keep a dedicated set of minis, but the plastic sleeve storage seems like a nice solution. And yes to gaming!! Definitely a gaming posse at the ready if you make your way out here.

I have made several sets of miniatures. I began with the boards. I made them 11" x 17". I had them printed at FedEx. The laminated them cut them to 8.5" x 11". The bound them into a book of maps. What a waste. I replaced my old printer that will print this size. Now 8.5" x 11" borderless. I have to print one side at a time. The laminate them. I am looking for way to bind them. FedEx uses spiral and when opened my pages do not align. I am making a book of maps and other games. . Now I am doing paper miniatures. I was going to cut them out, but your look so good. I am making them 1" by 2". I will fold them at the bottom. The I will laminate them and cut them out as one rectangle. I bought a package of plastic card stands from Amazon. The packages has 12 in 6 colors. When not in use the characters com out of the stands and pack into a small box. This way they do not get bent. Thanks for this tips on this and others on your post.
