Another way is pour boiling water over it. Leave covered while it cools. I like it because it rehydrates the soil too. You don't have to worry about hydrophobic soil.

Very True, but keep in mind, the boiling water quickly reduces in temperature from Hot to warm, so it will not get everything...I know this from boiling water for Hummingbird food.

Thank you, Robbie!!!! My manager and I started a little grow room in one of the empty offices at work and I just opened the bag of soil last week and it definitely has gnats. We don't have a stove/oven in our breakroom but I think there's a small convection oven in storage we could use. I don’t think we have a roasting pan stored away but I'm sure I can find something to bake tbe soil in...just like you always say "use what you got!" I appreciate you and Gary sooooo much!!

Great Advice! I’m not starting too early for sure! And the gnat killing thing-perfect! My husband just cooked some out on the grill. It smelled a bit like a campfire and after it cooled off it is a bit better. What I will try- roasting and steaming-we have an old Nesco roaster pan insert and I will first try baking soil outside and I will try putting a rack inside and water on the bottom and put soil in a screen type colander to steam it. I think 200 degrees for 15-20 minutes should cook those nasties. I will see which I like better. I’m glad you showed this. I seen a recent video where they were growing seedlings in the greenhouse. I didn’t understand why they weren’t concerned about gnat larvae yet all concerned about living soil. This is my take-- I recently seen how big those gnats get! They eat not just roots, but minerals and anything else your plants need. And they will do this inside or outside. The plants will get all the nutrients they need with half strength fertilizer before transplanting and more than enough in the garden. Not so tied up in this living soil thing-I just don’t want bugs! I swore I would never have the insane mess as last year with not just gnats, but aphids. Tried lettuce recently indoors and gnats again-out it went and it was top of line soil. I say they are getting sloppy with potting soils as I never had such problems before. Cooking it all from now on one way or another! Thx!

I know a lot of us are wanting to start planting now and that's where we will get disappointed when we have spent so much time babying our seeds so they will sprout, using tweezers to carefully plant them in cups filled with potting soil and JUST like you said they get leggy, wilt over & die. Patience is a virtue...thank you for all of your videos, Robbie and Gary, you inspire us to eat what we grow.

Me, too! Your post reminded me to let everyone interested on here know (and leave the seller some feedback.) Mine are about the same height as yours, planted together in a round, fairly shallow terra cotta pot in 9b NE FL, USA outside in mostly shade. Seeing them grow so fast and happy and strong sure has lifted our spirits...we've been sick for weeks and that's had us feeling a bit more down-in-the-dumps than we'd realized. Thanks for the reminder to be grateful. :) And thanks, Robbie, for the heads up...I would never have known. --Nick

Thank you so much for this great tip! I had also read that using a diluted solution of hydrogen peroxide to water plants with helps to get rid of the soil gnats in house plants. I think it's one part hydrogen peroxide to 4 parts water. I tried it and it did work. 😊 But thank you for sharing this method that I can use also....especially for planting seeds. Love all your wonderful tips!

That's a great idea - baking the soil. So let's say I want to reuse some soil that was in a pot and used last year, and I want to use that to sow some of my seedlings in it. I can go ahead and bake that soil and it'll be good? I reuse soil alot outside. I guess I'm asking if I'm going to reuse it inside.

Didn’t work for me and I drenched all the soil in all the plants with dilute mixture advised. Just had an issue with premium potting soil and threw it out and sprayed heavily all remaining surfaces of non edible plants. Luckily I didn’t start seedlings yet. I will bake soil in old pan for Nesco outside from now on. Glad she posted this vid.
