I'm so sorry you had to deal with that awful situation! I had a cardinal that lost his leg and he was here for 2 years after that. I named him Pedro and he would come when I would call him 😊. Now I have the third generation of Pedro's and I love it! Sending love and light to the bird and both of you! ❤

Since no other birds visit my hummingbird feeders I switched to the single small feeders. We have max 5 hummies and the single little things are perfect. No waste of sugar water, get cleaned every 2 to 3 days. I rotate them, put 3 new ones up as I take the 3 old ones off, fill the ant moat and take the old ones to be washed so they are ready for the next change. As always, you have the best info!!!!!

Wow! I never imagined that could be a hazard. Thanks for alerting us. When I first saw the video, I was sure you were going to be talking about the port holes. Some of them are VERY tiny and hummingbirds have gotten stuck. Didn't know about that until I stumbled across a video on the topic a year or so ago. I mostly use Oriole feeders now because the ports are larger and can accommodate all my nectar feeders...hummingbirds, Orioles, Gila Woodpeckers and BATS! Yes, in SE Arizona the nectar feeding bats will come to hummingbird feeders. They are voracious eaters and are currently guzzling almost 2 quarts a night. Their season here is pretty short as they migrate and I am so happy to be able to help them as they are endangered due to civilization destroying their natural food sources. They are amazing to watch as they flutter through my backyard.❤🦇

Dear Robbie. Oh my goodness! My heart goes out to the young Oriole and to you. I know how much you care for the birds and other animals. I hope and pray that the young bird can heal and adapt with the injured foot. Like another person commented, maybe you can contact the company to see if they would consider modifying the design of the feeder. I'm sure they would to save lives. God bless you for all you do and thank you for bringing this to our attention. I use the Perky Pet feeders with the red flower shape around the opening & yellow bee guards. We have a lot of bees here and I have to use those. The hummers know this kind of feeder too and go right to it. Take good care.❤

Thanks for the tip, Robbie! Hi Gary! It's beyond sad when our flying pets get trapped. I rescued a sparrow a few years ago, who got her head stuck inside of an older WBU feeder that had some dried seed around a porthole. I'm sure I scared her to death, as I had to use a pencil to break up the stuck seed from an opposite porthole, to free her head. She flew off after a few seconds afterwards, probably in utter disbelief that she was okay and free. Another warning for everyone - if you have skylights in a patio. Get one of those bulldog clips (magnetic with a clip attached), tie a wire or string or fishing line and a key tag to it - hang it from the metal frame of your skylight(s). I have a plant stand in my patio which holds a hummingbird feeder. They zip so quickly, and think it's an exit...when it isn't. I won't reveal more, but you can guess what happened. It looks tacky, but it works. An old fashioned wind chime might work, too. SO glad you are wearing sunglasses while you're outside, Robbie! I hope you're not sick to death of the drops and the visits by now! Take care, Christie / Angry Senior

We did have an emergency with an infant hummingbird got stuck in a huge spiderweb and we had to rescue him 45 minutes to clean the webbing off because he could not fly he was very distressed or she anyway she’s happy and free again, but she wouldn’t have survived that had her all wrapped up and she couldn’t do anything flop around on her back on the ground thank you for all you do. Same thing happened in one of my feeders like that. I came home from work and a hummer was trapped between the perch and the part with the feeder ports. Somehow his chest was caught in there! I was able to get him out, thankfully! He flew off and seemed to be fine. I wonder if it was another hummer that attacked him and pushed him between there. I think your alterations would have helped this bird to have escaped because there is more space for him to have gotten out. Thank you so much for posting this.

Thanks for letting us know about this. I'm pretty sure I have a hummer feeder like this. I'll check and fix it if needed. As for the bird, hopefully it will be okay. I did watch a nesting series last year of a blue tit bird (from Ireland I believe) that had only one foot, and she was healthy and even able to raise four babies.

I just bought a new one at Walmart because I noticed how much the hummingbirds prefer that to some other that I got at Hobby lobby, and I still made the holes bigger.

That poor little bird, ugh💔 I hope they fix the design asap. So sad 😓 Thank you so very much for the alert. So sorry for your heart💔❤️‍🩹 I’d have been a mess, as I’m sure you were.

I hope baby bird lives. At least you tried. I bought the "flying saucer" type feeders in the past and my hummers never ever used them. I only buy the ones that have a glass with a waist and four ports with a tulip on them. I took the bee guard off because the bees find their way in or they get stuck and it's a mess trying to clean the bee guard. The Orioles can enjoy the nectar with no bee guard too. We only have 4 hummers, 2 feeders which is 8 ports and they still flog each other constantly. This year we had sparrows eating the jelly put out for Orioles. Never seen that before. The sparrows and goldfinches like to drink water from the big ant moats I put above the feeders.

This happened to me around 10 years ago. Twice in one week. I never use those feeders since then. Only open perch
