I've heard pothos leaves are poisonous to cats and dogs, so probably for fish also. However the roots are not, so I grow pothos above my aquarium with just the roots in the aquarium. However, I did have to move my pothos to behind my matten filter because my cichlids WILL eat the roots quickly anywhere else in the tank. Benefit is the plants look great and grow quickly above the aquarium and REALLY lower the nitrates in the tank at the same time. Lower nitrates and great fertilizer for the plant = win/win.

I really love the idea of reusing plastic bottles to make a small grow-out tank for baby guppies! How long do you usually keep them in there? Do they have any filtration or aeration? How often do you change the water? Thanks in advance! :)
@4me4 жыл бұрын
The narrowest size of an aquarium should be 3 or more times the size of the fish. The narrowest side of a 2 liter plastic bottle is about 10 cm, so the fish can be up to 3 cm or so. Here is a video explanation about this: kzbin.info/www/bejne/pZezqYtppt9khas Now, fish grow all live long. So, we have to move larger than 3 cm fish into larger aquariums. Or we can breed dwarf size fish - that is what I've been doing ;) My dwarf guppies are about 2.5 cm (at age of 2 years). So, I keep my dwarfs in this size aquariums all live long. I do not change water and I do not use filters. :) There is no competition and therefore no losers when it comes to crazy obsession with what we love ;) Any aquarium care routine can be simplify. I've been prompted to do just that for the last couple years thanks to number of aquariums I have. Cleaning one aquarium for five minutes adds up to couple hours for two dozen aquariums. So, simplifying routines became a necessity. And it turns to be beneficial to the aquariums as well. Think about where the dirt in aquarium comes from - it is food in various forms. We can deal with it in number of ways - you add clean water. I did it too. Though, I stopped it and imply different approach that seems to work for couple years. The comment section is limited to 5000 symboles - it's not enough to explain everything on this matter. I am working on a coupe video explanations about my guppies behavior and feeding. Hopefully, those would give you better inside understanding of what your fish (whatever type of fish you may have) may need ;) All the best!

I live along lines of this saying :)) PS: The flakes you made could be not for your fish test. You have to experiment with different ingredients. But don't dispose the homemade flakes yet! Fish (and animals including people) get used to regular food you serve them. Serve them your homemade flakes again after tomorrow. Serve it every other day for a week. Teach them to eat various food. And watch how they respond: what food they eat faster, how they behave, watch fish colors (different food enhance different colors shown on fish body).

I fed the guppies with the mix, they loved it. This was my first attempt at a dry food; in the past i've made gel foods for all of my fish. Even the Australian redclaw crayfish eat it greedily. Economics is my reason for returning to home made foods. Brine shrimp eggs cost $420 per 1lb tin.

Hello Sir, kindly asking if this is also the same fish food you mentioned that you used in frogbit as fertilizer? I really have a hard time growing frogbit in aquarium with no flow at all(betta tank).. I only had a success with giant duckweed and salvinia. I wanted to grow it so badly without expensive ferts
@4me4 жыл бұрын
Any and all uneaten and eaten fish food become fertilizer in aquariums. I feed only as much fish food as fish can consume at once - and yet the fish waste (poop) is the outcome (fertilizer) that plants feed on. Frogbits need the top surface of the leaves to be above water (dry) and light for growing. I would put some frogbits in a wide container (nursery) for growing it strong. From that nursery you may add the plants back into primary aquarium as needed ;)
@4me4 жыл бұрын
Also, snails and all other critters produce waste (fertilizer) - that is what you may use in the nursery ;)

How long can you store it ?
@4me6 жыл бұрын
Thank you for the question! I've been storing it in two ways. I store it in a dark cool place for everyday feeding. Usually the amount I make at one batch would last couple months stored in this way. Larger quantities of homemade fish food flakes I store in a freezer for...hmm...one batch was store in such way for about 13 month. Fish ate it fine. Though, I deem it depends on the ingredients you use. Basically, you store dry food. Follow general guidelines for storing that particular food you use to avoid any problem ;) All the best!

The idea is to dehydrate/ dry the mix (not to cook it). So, in this example it took that long to achieve desirable result. I suppose you can do it in microwave... I actually prefer to let the mix air dry - takes days, but the result is actually great ;) Check videos on this playlist to see all my fish food "cooking" : kzbin.info/www/bejne/d2i9cmyqi7V0bLs

@4me4 жыл бұрын
I've been growing two types of filamentous algae. Fast growing filamentous algae (hair like) and slow growing Marimo balls. The fast growing filamentous algae grow without any help at all and it is virtually impossible to remove from aquariums. So, be mindful about it. Marimo balls need to be cleaned once in a couple months - that's basically all you have to do. Check videos on this playlist for more details about both types: kzbin.info/www/bejne/goOmnniOp81obtU

Great idea! I took a look at my store bought fish food ingredients and it's full of GMO soybean oil, gluten, wheat, etc. Not good for the fish and nothing you'd find in the ocean.. cheap fillers. And I even am very sensitive to gluten myself. I have gut pain for days. Also, algae and seaweed is so nutritious! It's packed with nutrients so there is no need to add vitamins/minerals!

I'm curious if your homemade food might slow down growth since it looks like it's all fiber. My guppy food is 42% protein, and only 6% fiber. Thanks for the video.
@4me4 жыл бұрын
I've been breeding a strain of dwarf guppies. So, every bit that helps in getting to the goal helps :) There some other important aspects about fish food. In the past year or so, I've been using only what grows in my aquariums for making fish food. My aquariums as sustainable - keep that in mind. The food I make is supplemental. Fish in my aquariums feed on what it can find all the time. It includes plants and all tiny aquatic critters - seed shrimp, snails (or rather snail eggs), and scuds. So, there is live food (protein) available for fish all the time. Thanks for your comment - it reminds me about a video about feeding experiment I did more than year back that I forgot to publish. Will do in a couple weeks or so ;) All the best on your adventure!

Could I add more fish to the food to add more protein?
@4me7 жыл бұрын
Thank you for the question! You can add more fish. Actually I purposely was not specific about proportions of ingredients for fish food flakes in this video - it's always better to try different and see what your fish likes better. My guppies love 30 - 40% meat (mix of fish, warms, snails and etc). With regards to protein - algae is very rich source of protein (bodybuilders use it for this purpose ;)

Try putting beef/chicken liver in the flakes, it is supposed to be really healthy and some people (for example this one guy who breeds bettas) use liver as a food alone, by that I mean that they just feed small pieces of liver to their fish and the fish are really healthy on a liver only diet.

@4me6 жыл бұрын
Thank you for the question!! I am actually working now on a video about filamentous algae! Any way, filamentous algae is very intrusive!! It virtually impossible to get rid of it once you get it in your aquarium. Nevertheless, it is very beneficial and surprisingly easy to take care of and to keep it under control (preventing from spreading). It would survive at any conditions in any freshwater aquarium without your help :) Control it growing by combination of reducing light, nutrition and physically removing excess of filamentous algae from aquarium. Basically, those are the same measurement to control any algae grow. You can look up more details on this topic in videos on this playlist: kzbin.info/www/bejne/qIS9YX-hjMmkg9k All the best!!

I got guppies too! I wanted your method of not change the water but won't it be smelly if you don't change water?
@4me6 жыл бұрын
@@noellawu1154 Smell comes from ammonia. Algae consume ammonia and does really good job for that matter. My beautiful wife let me have about 2-3 dozens aquarium in our living room for the last couple years under one condition - it should not smell :) Algae, bacteria, other microorganism and plants take care of ammonia and other nutrition in the best possible way - they thrive on it. That is how it's been done in nature on our planet. And that is how it's done in my aquariums. Though, it takes time to learn balance it properly. Every aquarium is different and needs daily observation. I move aquariums around to regulate amount of light (helps to keep algae growth under control). And feed fish only little (they have plenty of fresh food growing right in aquarium!)- any remains of the food gets spoiled and would cause of smell. All the best on your adventure!
