7:33 I graduated my chem class around a month ago, the color difference is due to concentration of the acid, and concentration of other contaminants. My class and I did a lab working with acids, and we made muriatic (Hydrochloric acid(stomach)) acid crystals, then reconstituted them and diluted them to avoid danger. The crystals were tan in color due to some contamination that we added in one of the trials. (Edit 1) The “fumpyness” in the white fluffy cotton is due to better nitration, and washing (theoretically). My advice: try longer nitrations, more baking soda bathes (separated by more water bathes (use distilled for best results ( new water each time))), and then let it dry under more controlled conditions. Other than that: TheKingOfRandom released a video a few years ago on several forms of nitrocellulose, I recommend checking it out. kzbin.info/www/bejne/n6OvgaOobLOZb7c

Chemist in a previous life here: 1. Cover the bowl when you leave it to nitrate. You'll lose water to evaporation, and your side products can crystallize... and apparently turn green. 2. Rinse your final product ad nauseum. You don't want anything but the nitrocellulose. Any other compounds left over will leave a residue when burning. You've done well if the final cotton is white and there's no evidence it ever existed when you burn it. 3. FLUFF IT UP. Even though it's more flammable than the default cotton, it's still just a fuel. You need a fuel-air mixture to burn quickly. edit: 4. Don't leave it to dry in the sunshine. Just in case you did the preparation well, there's a tiny chance you'll come back to an empty sheet of aluminum.

Does a longer nitrate time matter to engage a longer or fiercer burn, or does it hit a simple saturation point and whatever’s leftover is just lost to waste?
@InfernalBanana4 жыл бұрын
Chris J Peavy It mostly depends on the concentration and quantity of the reactants used. It doesn’t hurt to wait a short while for the nitration to go to completion, but what determines how long it takes is how much nitric acid to cotton you have. Too much cotton and not all of it nitrates, and too much acid could mean you’re wasting excess acid down the line if you don’t know how to purify it. If anything, waiting too long could destabilize the flash cotton or cause too many unwanted byproducts to contaminate it, like in the video, but giving it like a day to nitrate while covered shouldn’t hurt anything, and it should ensure the reaction has gone to completion. Just make sure to clean the cotton very thoroughly before using it. It should look like ordinary cotton by the time you’re done cleaning it, or with a slight yellow tinge at the very most.

DO NOT LEAVE THE NITRIC ACID COTTON MIX OVERNIGHT. Soak in acid for a couple minutes, rinse thoroughly in clean water, allow to dry (air dry or oven dry with extremely low heat, no flame). Ignite and stand back :) If you rinseit thoroughly, there will be very little yellowing of the cotton and very little residue. Impurities in your nitric acid solution can lead to more discoloration and a slower burn, depending on the impurity. The sodium bicarbonate solution is only necessary to deactivate the remaining acid when you finish nitrating the cotton and in case of acid spill emergencies. Allowing the nitric acid to form a cake around the cotton makes it significantly harder to wash the impurities and leftover nitric acid from the cotton. Please like this response to get it to Brian's attention.

You know why the nitrocellulose is more flammable and does not “choke” when you put a bunch in a confined space? That is because of the added nitro groups (NO2) that give more oxygen to the hydrocarbon molecule of cellulose. This mixes a fuel and a oxidizer together. It means that the combustion of nitrocellulose does not need O2 (oxygen gas in the air) to occur, because it already has its own oxygen. That is roughly why the difference is so big. C6H10O5 (cellulose) C6H7(NO2)3O5 (nitrocellulose) ~> 5 oxygen atoms ~> 11 oxygen atoms

Nitrocellulose has applications in old-timey film development and gets a lot of current use in biochemistry labs and probably other industrial uses. It's useful for adhering proteins samples to a thin sheet of it, which can then be used for binding things like antibody-bound-fluorescent tags so you can look for specific proteins in samples. Some other nitration reactions that should be familiar is TNT (tri-nitro-toluene) or nitro-glycerin, if you add some nitro groups to an organic molecule called toluene or glycerin (glycerol) you get a much more combustible/explosive version of them - similar to what you guys did here. You probably don't want to fuck with homemade TNT or nitroglycerin though.

Also, to make your cellulose nitrate better, use a mix of fuming nitric and sulfuric acid. You can distil the fuming nitric acid your self. Fuming nitric will catch nitrile gloves on fire, and quickly eat through other types, so make sure you use tert-butyl rubber. Again, I love these ghetto chemistry videos.

The Potassium Nitrate (Stump remover) and the Sulfuric Acid (Drain Cleaner) are reacting together In this reaction KNO3 + H2SO4 -> KHSO4 + HNO3 The HNO3 is Nitric Acid, and older samples, like the one Jason had that had been settling for 48 hours, can often acquire a yellow cast due to decomposition into oxides of nitrogen and water, which explains why the older solution had the yellow tint and the new solution didn't have the yellow tint. KHSO4 is the other product of the reaction, commonly known as Potassium Bisulfate is white and water soluble, and doesn't really play much part in the end product of flash cotton, however KHSO4 is corrosive and an irritant

Also the white cotton burns better than the yellow cotton because, the yellow cotton likely has some leftover dried out nitric acid, and is probably inhibiting the reaction with the gun cotton

I'm no scientist. But I would say the white fluffy stuff burns better because more oxygen can get there. So the chemical reaction happens much faster.

Yeah. Depending on the chemistry, which I don’t understand well enough, it might just be a question of more surface area.

please for your own sake do not ever neutralize acid that is on your hand wash it off instead. neutralizing causes a thermal reaction that may burn you
@spaceblockb52845 жыл бұрын
Honestly its a case to case basis with acids on how to react. Quite often it is safer not to were gloves, sometimes gloves will save your life. Some acids are safe to neutralize others are not. But you are right, if your not sure it is best to just wash it off, not neutralize it.

Nitric acid (if concentrated) reacts with gloves Generally, though, I have been taught to wipe the chemical off with a towel (if possible) and then quickly rinse in loads of water

7:32 Someone might already have answered this, but Nitric Acid can react with atmospheric oxygen, decomposes and forms Nitrogen dioxide, and while HNO3 is transparent, NO2 is actually yellow, that's why the color is different. The reaction goes: 4HNO3 ---> 4NO2 + 2H 2 O +O2 Edit: Also, the white burnt better than the yellow for this same reason, you could, theoretically, wash it a couple more times with baking soda to remove the excess of HNO3 which would, in turn, reduce the amount of NO2 left in the cotton (that's why its yellow) but HNO3 doesn't always react the way it ""should"" and you will ALWAYS have NO2. OR you could've used a fresh batch, since the one Jason did already had a lot of NO2 in it,.

So a Chemistry student's best guess as to why is brown is either yellowing from sunlight or contamination, as I haven't seen nitrocellulose turn yellow with lab grade chemicals. Also the fluffy stuff probably burns better because it has more surface area not because of a difference in the composition. if once you spread out your nitrocellulose as much as possible it's still doesn't perform to the standard that you want getting pure sulfuric acid and potassium nitrate will most likely be the the way forward. Making your dynamite more explosive may not be the best option for you guys though especially with the sparking tools your using.

And the reason the fluffier cotton worked faster than the wad of cotton was because of dencity, the wad was so compact that it didn't have enough oxygen to flare up faster. Take all of the cotton and just pull it apart more space means bigger flare...

not quite, there are many types of drain cleaner but the two most common are sulfuric acid or sodium hydroxide. theirs was sulfuric acid so it wouldn't work, you are thinking of sodium hydroxide which reacts with tin foil (actually aluminum) to produce hydrogen gas; like in the other video they mention.

If I'm remembering my A level chemistry correctly. Burning can be described as rapid oxidation. One or more of the chemicals used is turning the cotton yellow and leaving a non gaseous and non liquid compound (ash) which is going to be formed of carbon compounds and oxides of the chemical in question.
