I took a small blacksmithing course years ago and made myself a little steel like that out of an old file, it's great. We used to use it to start ritual fires in the day. Nothing feels better than something you made yourself. I got out of the habit as I got older and the ground seems further away now when leaning over! I would have loved to keep smithing but I am so small and teachers usually so large I was always bumbling around fighting with how small my hands were. Great video. Have a nice day, Sir.

I love flint and steel. My favorite method after the handdrill. It could still be viewed as a survival method. A knife with a high carbon content will of course throw some sparks when struck on the spine with a proper stone. Two options if you didn't have char would be very very dry powdered punkwood or the ovum from a milkweed (asclepias ssp) pod that has gone to seed, and turned grey on the outside. The ovum is the rusty orange colored part inside the pod that the seeds attach to. It's more difficult than with a proper flint and steel with good char, but both punkwood dust and milkweed ovum will catch a spark without needing any pre-charring. Pin the ovum down with the tip of your knife, or put the tip of your knife into your pile of punkwood dust, and strike with your flint so your sparks are directed downward onto your material 😊

Nice strike-a-light demo, Bjorn! I like to start campfires with flint & steel. It brings a sense of tradition to a camp. To anyone starting out with this method, I recommend making your first strike, hard and strong, as the char-cloth falls apart so fast, (very delicate). Skol!

Bjorn I am blown away by the landscape in Norway. I live in Northern Ontario where our forest is almost the same, except we have a few feet of snow permanently there from December until late March.

Sometimes fire starting can be difficult with a lighter. Thanks for the video Bjorn I can definitely use these methods so I can leave the lighter at home. Have a great day good Sir.

I like to use agate or jasper as I get more sparks than with chert or flint. Haven't made a flint and steel fire for quite a few years, but I use the agate and jasper in my flintlock pistol.
