He is a very chilled teacher. I watched a video and instead of starting the restoration I had a glass of wine and listened to jazz instead 😊

I love your channel! Everyone is raising the question about Meths. They can use Everclear to cut their shellac with. It is what a lot of luthiers use, and can be purchased at any liquor store.

Really enjoying the videos Rob, I am a carpenter who is tiptoeing into the world of French polishing and your video's are a breath of fresh air, so many tutorials on here are so 'wooden' (pardon the pun) but you make it look so simple. I have done a night course on polishing and I can honestly say that I learned more watching your tutorials than I did there, they were very over complicated in my opinion. By the way what is the soundtrack to this particular video, very funky!

Thanks for the great video! I have some diy experience with old pieces of wood furniture, but never enough straight forward info on French Polish to try it, now I will! Should I even look at the de-waxed shellac flakes? I did hear that they are better to resist moisture.

Hi Rob, thank you for all your videos. My mother's piano has a French polish shellac finish that has crazed, alligatored. What is the best way to restore it? I've heard of re amalgamation but not sure of the process. Any comments are greatly appreciated! -Mary

Hi Rob, Another, no doubt daft, question. I presume that you, as a commercial operation, can get clear/undyed meths . For us lesser mortals, does the purple dye make any difference? Cheers.

I don't think you would go far wrong with blonde flakes teak needs no stain... I sometimes just use button flakes ...the darker the polish flake the more it kills the orange in the teak... Thanks for the compliment too..;-)...

is this method of polishing suitable for a dining room table that's used every day or am I better to use a clear polyurethane if used daily? I have a dining table that is in dire need of some tender loving care but it's also our main table so it will need to be somewhat resistant to grandchildren and careless teenagers

What exactly is 'meths'? Is it methanol or ethanol? Or something completely different?
@GC-ks7nu3 жыл бұрын
Hi Does it matter what brand of shellac you use ? The prices vary significantly on the internet Also does the french polish expire once mixed ? How long before you make a new batch ?

Is "meths" the same as denatured ethanol?

Hi there, I'd like to know which Shellac flakes I should buy so I can make my own French Polish the same colour as a mid tone teak. I think the blonde may be too pale and all others seem very dark for what I'm needing. Your help would be greatly appreciated, I also think your very, very hot and a joy to watch ;) x

Hi there Rob, I'd like to know which Shellac flakes I should buy so I can make my own French Polish the same colour as an Antique pine (not orange Yak) I'm thinking about doing it to some stripped and sanded oak drawers, any suggestions? Should I just oil them? Its driving me nuts! P.s. Love your video's ;) Totally hooked!
@ken-mb5cp7 жыл бұрын
Michelle Coldham, Hull & Yorkshire Memories buy blond shellac and add a little amber dye. We also use zinzer shellac from the can if you want convenience. Can add dye to that or use straight.

Are "Meths" Methenol alcohol or Ethanol alcohol? Or are they mineral spirits like Varsol?
@cryolith8 жыл бұрын
+John Saia Meths are "methylated spirits" also known as Denatured Alcohol in the US
@johnsaia97398 жыл бұрын
cryolith Which would be an ethenol here in the US but rendered undrinkable. LOL!
@just_a_guy134 жыл бұрын
Why can't you use shellac off the counter and add meths to it to make this??
@wehart29504 жыл бұрын
Meths = denatured alchohol? AKA methylated spirits? I've just never heard the term meths.
@lettherebepiece718410 жыл бұрын
You are the first person ive seen mixing shellac 50/50 on the internet and don`t you put it through a paper filter to catch any unwanted bits, they usually recommend 4/1 i think its known as the 1lb mix 1LB of shellac to a gallon of meths ,why is yours so strong?Also what meths are you using and could you use alcohol to mix shellac and what is the difference in using meths to alcohol?
@ScottWayneJackson6 жыл бұрын
"Meths" is ethanol.
@ScottWayneJackson6 жыл бұрын
Yes I think this would be approximately a 2lb cut, as it's a bit more than a pound of flakes, mixed with a bit more than half gallon of alcohol.

What is meths?
@casimiralexander8 жыл бұрын
what is meths?-turpentine?
@kickpublishing8 жыл бұрын
+Casimir Alexander Methylated Spirits - or Methanol, it's a higher alcohol than ethanol - the simplest of all alcohols in fact. Traditionally people used 100% pure ethanol for French Polish but you cant buy that without a scientific license for obvious reasons. It is made from wood but should not be confused with Isopropyl alcohol. All 3 will get you pissed - but only with ethanol will you be able to see the next morning as the others make you blind (providing they dont kill you).
