When I was in the 7th grade, my friends and I would go to a Drug store near the school during lunch. We would each get a small bag of Fritos and the lady that worked there would cut the top of the bag off and pour a ladle of chili onto it. She would then put a slice of cheese on top. It was so good. This is my favorite way to eat Frito pie.

Whe I was growing up I used to love to go skating. At the skating rink they had a concession stand and they had Frito pie. What they would do was open the top of a bag of Frito's and spoon in some of the hot dog chili on top. I will always remember this...it tasted so good!

Very interesting the ways you do frito pies. I live in Española, New Mexico and here you will see them for every church, family or sporting event. We traditionally do ours in a small bag of fritos with red chile made from hamburger, a spoon of beans and caldo, topped with cheddar cheese and chopped onions optional. With time we have come to serve them in disposable bowls and also add fresh tomatoes and lettuce. sometime we will make them with all of the fixings, but with green chile.

Oh man that sounds so good! Yeah usually it's served in a cut open bag of fritos, but toppings and the vessel it comes in has evolved. 😁

Gotta have green chile or it's not food. EVERYTHING is better with green chile... My absolute favorite was in the late 60's at the Woolworth's lunch counter on the plaza in Santa Fe. (Second favorite was when it was served for school lunch in 'burque. Lived for Frito Pie day!)

I'm in Los Lunas New Mexico. I like my Frito pie with beans onion sour cream and of course lots of cheese. I usually use wolf brand chili one can with beans one without. I'm actually going to make Frito pie tomorrow night for dinner and use Chili Cheese Fritos this time. Never tried it with those kind of Fritos before

You go girl, no beans, yes ma’am. I’m 80 years old and grew up in Austin. Usually, Frito pie was sold at Little League baseball games. It was kept simple: slice a small bag of Fritos down the side, then dump in the chili. That little bag was 5 cents back then. Still love Frito pie today¿

Someone, probably in Mexico, had to have invented the Frito pie, and that unknown person remains unsung to this day, even though, if known, that person would have a statue to her memory in Plano, Texas. That's a seriously gourmet version of Frito pie, by the way, Mamá, what, with your homemade Texas-style chile - yours is a massive cut above the standard-issue Frito pie assembled in a 7 11 with hot dog chili and nacho cheese. Wow!

Gochujang mama. That brings back so many memories for me as a kid. I too are from Texas and still live here (Tyler/Longview area). Gathered around the table we would make our own bowl. I still make mine the same way chips then a little cheese then a big scoop of home made chilli then MORE cheese and some onions and jalapeños. Damn that sounds good right now!!!!!!!

How did you make the cheese sauce???
@benw99492 жыл бұрын
-- Haha, classic old-school. Wolf brand chili is great, beans or no beans. Friends gave me some of the turkey chili, and I was surprised, it was pretty good. Shredded sharp cheddar is what my mom used when we had Wolf brand chili, and yes, Frito pie had diced hot dogs in it. :) -- Also old-school: I grew up with a version of quick and easy Chile con Queso: a can of Ro-Tel tomatoes and green chiles, mild (my mom would've preferred hot); and cubed Velveeta cheese, combined and melted over low heat to get the right cheese sauce thickness. It isn't terribly authentic to Chile con Queso traditionally, but it works; I grew up with it, even though we were also well aware that it wasn't a traditional Tex-Mex recipe. (Dang auto spellchecker keeps trying to respell Spanish words.)
@benw99492 жыл бұрын
Whew, I wasn't far along in the video. I was afraid I'd get razzed and dissed in the comments for the Velveeta! :D -- I grew up with a version of Frito pie that layered Fritos, chili (homemade or Wolf brand), shredded sharp Cheddar cheese, possibly chopped onions, and layer again, with cheese on top, baked in a casserole dish. That dated back to at least the 1970's, maybe the 60's or 50's, and it was a go-to cheap favorite for (at least) Texas moms. -- My mom and great-grandmother were chili-heads; my mom loved jalapeños added to her homemade spaghetti! :) I only like things mild, but I'm Texan, so I can take a little caliente/hot/spicy. :) Any of the variations you fixed would be good, although I'd personally want to avoid the jalapeños in the last one. :) -- This reminds me, I've seen your enchiladas and frijoles refits recipes before! Good stuff. I really need to learn some home-cooked Tex-Mex recipes / Mexican and other Latinoamerican recipes to fix at home. I miss them and can't get out as much lately. -- BBQ would be good too. (I need to find a local place that will deliver.)

I'll have to try your chili recipe again, I messed it up the first time. The flavor and texture of the masa disappeared after it sat in the fridge for a day or two.. The place where I really screwed up was not draining the ground beef after I scrambled and browned it plus I had already seasoned it and then reseasoned it after draining it. It was edible but it was not the best. Thanks

I'm a Texan too, and I feel sorry for states that don't get Wolf Brand Chili in their stores. I've tried other brands in other states, and they ranged from "meh" to downright disgusting. Wolf Brand is the only one to make Frito Pie with (unless homemade)!

I all is from Texas all. I stopped buying Wolf brand chili WITHOUT beans 40 somethin years ago. I noticed it had little chopped up cow veins in it. I noticed the "bean" chili DID NOT have the "veins." I all love Wolf brand chili ya'll, & it is the only store bought chili I buy. How long has it been since you had a nice hot, thick, steam'n bowl of Wolf band chili partner? Well that's too long!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It's not chili if it has beans. Can't believe how many people including big chili makers like Wolf and Hormel to name but two still don't know this fact.
