There's a much simpler way...just attach all of the pieces to the backer board before you have the outside frame attached and make sure all of the pieces are a bit longer than the backer. When done, cut all four sides flush. The only fitting will be the four outside frame pieces. You did this like someone would do a built-in geometric wood wall project, but you have the benefit of being able to cut the sides away here where you couldn't do that on a wall.

do you think i would be able to do it with a hand saw this way? (and sanding the pieces of course)
@danliutikas
@danliutikas 2 жыл бұрын
@@the_potato_herald Of course, but like with anything done with hand tools, the result will be more dependent on your skill. I’d suggest snapping a line on the top pieces so you can see exactly where to cut and take nice long strokes with the saw to avoid waves or jagged edges. If you do make mistakes, either fill with some wood putty or enjoy the character that a hand built piece has.

@@danliutikas thank you! I really would like to do something like this, but a miter saw is a bit of a steep investment for "a nice hobby project that would look cool on my walls" :)
@danliutikas

@@the_potato_herald Work with what you have and do your best. Also, if you do invest in a tool for this, a miter saw probably won’t have enough crosscut range, you should use a circular saw or a table saw. But…you totally don’t need either, just layout a clear line and take your time cutting it with a hand saw.

I love the design of these and can’t wait to make them! I’ve seen other people wait to put the frame on until the end-that way you can both get the correct angle and precisely mark where you need your crosscut to go the first time.

Why not stain everything before you make any cuts. That way you don't have to move them again to stain them. You can glue and nail as you fit them in.

i wish i watched your video before making these myself. I did it the way you went with your 2nd one but with a paint brush I could get all the nooks and crannies but the stain got too dark. Thanks for the tips.

Really like the fact you shared the various method. I am curious as how the 1/4 board can hold your pin nails. Your nails are probably not going all the way thru the board thus that is less than 1/4" of grip which is very little

@@nrzona Before doing the glue up, I replicated the design on the back, then glued up and clamped another flat backer board on so nothing would move, flipped and nailed. It may be a bit tedious but it worked.

Love these pieces! Is it necessary to use both the wood glue and the nails? Or can I just use wood glue?
@exoticislandgirl670
@exoticislandgirl670 2 жыл бұрын
Hi 👋🏽 The answer to your question is Yes. You absolutely can use Wood glue if that is what you have that you can work with. Although be the advised, that when using wood glue it is important that you either use clamps or put weight on your dowels and allow them to dry completely. This way it’ll have a much cleaner look and you won’t see any gaps and excess glue along the areas you applied the adhesive to. If you have Liquid Nails even better. Hope this helps 🙂

I love the way all of those look!! Definitely wanting to try this project. I'd say I'm a DIY beginner and have been buying tools and stuff over past 6mths. So I'm assuming that I'd need a miter saw and a nail gun in order to even attempt this wood art project??

Stain isnt that expensive. You should’ve just stained everything before you made any cuts. Sure you may end up with scrap thats stained. But you’re gonna have waste regardless. The scrap that ends up cut off may be stained bit since this is a small project for just yourself the cost of that wasted stained will be pennies. But the time save os well worth it.
