Last winter I decided to chance leaving all my geraniums in their pots in a shed with not much light. On taking them out they were in a sorry state, looekd dreadful and I though that I had lost them. I tidied them up and looked after them outside and now every single one is wonderful! I can hardly believe the amount of leaves and buds. I grew up admiring my grandmothers pélargoniums in her porch with lots of dried tea leaves around their stems and wished one day to have some Inside too. I am about to move to a new house that I have not yet seen because of confinement so I hope that there are places to put some 'pelargoniums'! thank you for your advice John ,xoo hugs from France

I ended up moving as I said and some friends looked after my geraniums for a couple of very hot months. When I eventually got them back they were in a terrible state of neglect. I cleaned them up, checked the soil, put them in a light filled courtyard, watered every day, fed them and now they are all covered in blooms and happy again. I believe that plants know when they are being cared for by people who have their best interests at heart. I recently bought two rose bushes, well stumps really from a heat damaged garden center ( we had some terrible heatwaves), I paid a few euros each. On getting them home I potted them up in large pots ( rose bed not ready ) gave them some chicken poop, tidied up the damage and watered them each day and now they are covered in buds ! Incredible. I DID have a heart to heart talk with them and told them hos they almost died and now they owed me survival. It worked!
I could watch you all day only found this Chanel today and I’m obsessed with your wonderful accent you sound just like my Dad love from London

John, you couldn't be boring if you tried! So glad I found you, your enthusiasm and energy is infectious, perhaps not the correct term to use during a pandemic but like many the world over, lockdown has had some silver linings especially in the old fashioned 'arts' of gardening, cooking,craft and creativity. While my heart goes out to those seriously affected by covid 19, and the hard working medical professionals, I am grateful for people like you who show that anyone can garden. Thank you, please keep making your fun vlogs from beautiful Ireland. From Kaye in Australia.

Thanks for the Geranium video, so glad you use some soil in the mixture. Very good point that you water it well and let it dry out, think that is the mistake I make. Hope to have some Geranium in the house at Christmas.

What you didn't mention was sunlight. - I bought an beautiful little African violet last summer. I kept it on a northern exposure window where it gets plenty of light but not the burning heat of the sun. I watered it only once a week until the water drained to the bowl. If the water had not been sucked up again by evening, I would throw out the water and let it get dry. I never gave it any plant food. Then suddenly this March, buds began to form. And by the end of April it had an enormous bouquet of big flowers. I was amazed. It's June 24 now and it still has 5 flowers! The trick was an unobstructed source of light. I have kept the little flower pot on top of a small box, in front of my window, 5 inches from the window on a corner of my dresser. It's the ONLY spot I have near a window. I have discovered it was 12 hours of sunlight. I suspect these geraniums need the same thing. Your green house has massive amount of light without the burning sunlight. I wonder how many houses have these advantages. Much to consider.

For anyone who doesn't know terracotta pots suck moisture out of the soil. Soak your pot overnight in water before planting.

If you take cuttings from a geranium year after year does time make it dificult to keep on making plants from that particular geranium. I heard this in a peruvian video that the plant gets old and you haveto get a new plant or start one with seeds. The new plant from an old geranium does not bloom well.
@johnlordssecretgarden6 жыл бұрын
Julia Holz. Not really true. A geranium (pelargonium) can be propagated year after year, almost indefinitely, from cuttings.
@vn58546 жыл бұрын
Absolutely not true. As long as the plant is healthy you can take cuttings repeatedly. The primary reason why geraniums fail to bloom, especially indoors is insufficient sun. I dont mean just light I mean SUN! Also, cutting grown geraniums will make much nicer plants indoors than seed grown geraniums.
