I'm 75. I learned to crochet like Arne, when I was 6. Now my friends who do the as Arne says, "It's impolite to point" method, can't crochet very long or have completely given up crochet, because of stress on the index finger. The way you hold your hook and yarn Arne is very, very efficient and so easy on your hands. How lucky we were to learn the most ergonomic way to crochet as children :-)

What a wonderful video! Arne & Carlos, you are lovely hosts and instructors. I'm in my 60's and haven't made a granny square in about 40 years, so I needed a refresher. Your presentation style was easy to follow and so logical. Can't wait to learn your technique of crocheting the squares together instead of sewing!! This technique is so clever, doing the treble along with turning the work each round has given my piece an unusual textured look. I’m delighted with the effect, because let’s face it the granny square Afghan is a stunning visual assault anyway but with a 2D effect thrown in, it’s definitely heirloom material. Manythanks gentlemen.

I was flip in another comment, but yes - I do hold my hook in the "knife" hold, the same way Arne does, although in my left hand. I think the pencil hold was popular in Victorian days because it was supposed to look more "graceful." I didn't realize it had persisted into the 21st century, but as knitters often remind each other, there is no wrong way to do it if you're getting the results you want! I love watching you two!

I am left handed and crochet left handed, have to hold it however necessary to complete the project! I have done a blanket just continuing the granny square into a 36" by 36" lap blanket. Thank you for the videos and can't wait to see how you connect them, it's lovely and blends in well.

This is the video that revolutionised my crocheting! I quickly changed my hold to Arne-style and my tension is now even and consistent. And so much more comfortable. I’m joining a hexagon scarf ufo started 5 years ago and the difference in sizes is a joke, but I think this hold will make that a thing of the past. I’m just back to check the stitch you use because I’m 6 squares into a sock yarn scarf and got a bit lost in translation. Phew, it is a UK double treble. Thanks guys, you are an inspiration - so natural and accessible.

Oh Arne, you are holding your crochet hook the right way!! It's how my grandmother used to hold her crochet hook (how I've been holding it since I was 4 years old) and it's by far the fastest way to crochet. I am appalled at a lot of the crochet videos. Most so-called crochet "teachers" on KZbin hold their hooks the wrong way, they keep twisting it and their wrist. It's very inefficient and it can lead to injuries.

I hold my crochet hook that way also. My grandmother held it like you'd hold a spoon, but I struggle with that type of hold. I think the overhand hold that we use, probably uses larger muscle groups & is more ergonomic than relying on the tiny finger muscles to control the hook . Not just a boy thing, LOL

I ham-fist my crochet hook as well, Arne. I call it hamfisting because it's as if the crochet hook is the bone that runs through the ham my fist makes grasping it. It does appear to be an awkward way to many crocheters, but who cares what they say - have they won any Blue Ribbons lately? I have 3. But I am after the grand prize red white and blue roses set as well as the cash prize purse that comes with it. And That's why I'm watching you , to learn, but you're gonna have to go SLOWER so I can see the motions of those FASTER THAN A SPEEDING BULLET HANDS OF YOURS ! BY the way, I can go faster our way, Arne, than I can the other way - until my wrist starts hurting and then I have to change an' do it another way - the regular way - and that goes well for a while and then I have to change again....

Arne you are perfectly normal, you hold your hook knife style the other way is pencil style. I hold my hook knife style also. I am a self taught American that prefers Crochet over Knitting because it is much faster even with Arthritis. When I teach crochet to people that really want to learn I start them out with the granny square because it is easy and it uses most of the basic stitches. When I first started my own design's I would sketch out in blue print style, then it became popular to the outside world. I think Carlos and Arne are ahead of the game when it comes to Knit design's as well. I watch you on youtube at least once a day for inspiration. Thank you and God Bless.
