I'm no coffee nerd. I just enjoy a great cup of coffee without having to turn it into a full blown science experiment.
Simple steps to making great pour-over coffee:
1. Boil water in long spout kettle
2. Grind beans to number of cups desired
3. Pre-soak filter and dump out water
4. Pour in coffee grounds
5. Pour in hot water - bloom phase
6. Continue brewing until coffee reaches bottom of wood collar

Thank you for showing people that good pour over coffee can be make without "an Engineering degree". I've been making pour over coffee for decades (since back in the 80s), long before it became trendy. I had a Melitta portable coffee dripper that I used for both home and camping. I also had a Melitta manual coffee maker that had a large cone dripper and a glass coffee pot. The coffee was always good using this method and you could make in anywhere that you could boil water, even out in the middle of nowhere. Like you said, there's no need for it to be a science experiment!

I wanted to get into coffee as a new hobby, after an amazing cup at a restaurant. I was starting to feel the learning curve was way too steep, and I have little time as a student/working part time… but this came along! I made my first cup today and it was pretty rad- so thank you!!

Don't be intimidated by all of the people out there who make it sound like you need an engineering degree to make good coffee. It's really not rocket science. As you discovered, you can make yourself a really good cup of coffee this way by just using a little, old-fashioned common sense! Make changes that YOU like. All of those videos that tell you how much coffee to use, what grind to use, etc. and that you HAVE to follow their recipe are just looking for followers and reviews. What makes a good cup of coffee is adjusted to YOUR taste. YOU be the judge. You're the one drinking it.

Hey, do I go to your house and tell you how to make your damn coffee? Its all about what you like! Its so funny to me how if your off on your bloom time or pour it somehow makes a subpar cup of Joe. I understand you get off flavors if temp is off but there are so many ways to pour over that timing and your god damn swirl pattern aren't gonna make a damn difference. So just enjoy the coffee, the video and relax because the only thing about coffee you should be critical about is the beans and method you like!

You can certainly use pre-ground coffee! I've done it before. Grinding the whole beans fresh and a little more coarse than pre-ground leads to a fresher more flavorful cup! Enjoy :)

this is great! Also, does anyone else freak out when there's no bubbles at the blooming stage or is it just me? lol
@alexwang2419
@alexwang2419 Жыл бұрын
Hi angiemon. If there's no bubble it tells you one thing and one thing only: there's not much CO2 left in the ground at the end of your blooming. So maybe you're brewing with very light roast and there's not much CO2 to begin with, or your beans have been sitting there for awhile and it has degassed naturally, or you've done a fantastic job during the bloom and completely wetted all the beans within the first pour. It could be because of one of the three reasons above.

I would say that 99% of coffee grinders with "cup settings" are not right to use for a Chemex. A "typical" coffee measure is for a 6 oz cup. But for a Chemex carafe its a 5 oz cup. Unless you have played around with that grinder to find the proper setting for whatever size Chemex carafe being used, its wrong. I personally weight both the beans (40 g) and water (740 g)for a 5 cup Chemex Carafe.

Seeing people use scales, stop watches, and mathematical charts to brew a cup of coffee is so pretentious. Lol, sure, you can brew a slightly better cup of coffee that way. You can also use basics to brew an okay cup of coffee that's fine without scales and charts, lol. (Unless you completely botch the pour and grind ratio), it will be good enough for me ☕️
