Why can't you store cupcakes in airtight plastic container?

If it is without the fondant topper, it is great to store cupcakes in air-tight containers to keep the cake moist. However, if you have put the fondant on top and put them in air-tight containers, the fondant toppers will turn soft, sweat & sticky.
