Sad! I don't believe in forcing children to eat when they are full or food they truly don't like. That's how you create a picky eater or a potential eating disorder. Of course you want to encourage children to eat and try new foods. But food should never be a punishment. If they don't like something now, they are sure to hate it later if forced to eat it. Kids will usually like more foods later on. Some remain very picky. But forcing a child to eat is never good for many reasons. And no, it's not ikay to let them only eat junk food. You can usually find healthy food they will like. Most kids like fruit so if you offer that with most meals at least they are getting nutrients that way.

And she was raised with a single mom and 3 children so she saw it as rude to not finish off her mothers dinner as she takes care of them all day and everyday! She tries to raise us (my family) the same. As a picky eater sometimes I don’t feel like eating something, and just don’t feel well enough to eat (sick) my mom will just make me my go to meal (aka mac and cheese or jasmine rice lol) I do appreciate the info about this though! I always tell kids that if they eat something they don't like, they don't like how it was prepared, because there are sooooo many ways to cook one thing, and I bet they'll find at least one of them yummy. They just have to taste it. Because if they had spinach at their friend Max's house and they thought it was the grossest thing ever, then they just don't like Max's Mom's Spinach. And that's ok. The one taste rule is that I hold out my hand palm up in front of them and say if they put the food in their mouth for a taste, and it's the yuckiest thing they have ever tasted, they can spit it out in my hand. I have yet to have had a kid spit my food out. One time I had a friend's little boy, and she told me he only eats meat now, but when she came home he walked by and asked what he was eating and he said, "Purple ice cream bar!!!" And she was so stunned when I told her it was Philipino purple yam and coconut milk ice cream lol. He ate all kinds of new stuff that day.

I think when I was young my mom just told me “you should be willing to try things because you might like it” and that just made sense to me so for as long as I can remember I’ve always been open to trying things and I’m glad that I was that way. I don’t think kids should have to be forced to eat food they dont like, but I hope if I have kids in the future they will be open to trying things because otherwise I would feel bad that they are missing out.

My kids got that speech. Also 1 rule with 1 exception. Whatever you put on your plate, you must eat. Exception: It's something new I want you to try. You'll get a little bit and be required to eat a whole mouthful. If it's something I like, I'll finish the rest if you don't like it. Ok, second rule: You must eat enough nutrition to be healthy for that meal. If all you choose is ice cream and you refuse to eat more, I will add more to your plate and you must eat what I put there.

Making my kids choose something healthy to eat at every meal teaches them that there are times we have to do something we don't like even if we don't want to. It also gets them use to eating a variety of foods they otherwise wouldn't experience. Making them eat everything they put on their plate (with exceptions) teaches them about the need to learn their limits and the consequences of their own actions resulting from their own choices. You have your way to teach these things and this is mine.

Kids who say they don't like a thing. Have just not had it prepared in a way they like it. Some things you're unable to get around like texture. But for most things you just need to have it prepared in a certain way. Lots of parents just try to shove veggies and healthy stuff down their kids throat without preparing it properly and then complain when they don't like them. Growing up lots of people praised my mom because me and my brother would eat vegetables and she just said "I just prepare the ones I need to and don't prepare the ones I don't need to" and they act like she just explained a huge revelation
