I've been watching your videos for only about a week and I can't tell you how much I've improved. I've hula hooped before, but never tried anything other than getting it to go around my waist, so this is exciting. I bought a plastic one with led lights about 2 weeks ago. I think I would do better with one like you recommend (pvc/gaffers tape) - do your sales affiliates have ones they can make that will light up? Or do you have recommendations on making one with lights? I'm okay at DIY projects. Kinda. Also, getting your hands into the hoop (well, arms) is such a struggle for me. Its like the hardest thing in the world. But maybe more practice. I'm committing to an hour a day for the next 5 weeks or so!

For those looking for the tubing, it's actually irrigation tubing. Home depot and other stores sell it in rolls of 50 ft or 100 ft (or even more if you're making a lot!)

@@hoopsmiles there is PEX tubing too, usually on the same aisle as PVC and it's very flexible like the irrigation tubing and just slightly more expensive. I imagine it would work just as well and though the long rolls are usually white it sometimes also comes in blue and red :)

Keep going with the hooping videos - even if they are only a couple of minutes long and once a month. I've seen tutorials where people use a piece of cut up tube as a connector. You cut a piece of around 10 cm of tube and then cut it lengthwise. Then you roll the tube lengthwise.

Nice informative video but may I request fixing your parts list please. The major part, the hoop, is Not made from PVC tubing but rather HDPE tubing which is a High Density Polyethylene tubing. It comes it various pressure resistant sizes and diameters. Please do not list tubing diameters as widths. The greater the pressure resistance the thicker the wall thickness hence making it more stiff as the pressure resistance increases. Please note there is a big jump in cost of this HDPE tubing when jumping from 100psi to 160psi but most hoop people do use 160psi. Yes, the larger the hoop the great the diameter of tubing like 3/4". The when applying the coupling there are alternative methods to assist in not deforming the ends from heat. If using a hot air source for heat, place the coupling on hard fire resistant material like concrete, place the tube at the end while pushing down the tube then wave your hot air source back and forth until it slips on. What you are doing in this process is making the HDPE tubing pliable or soft so it will expand over the coupling with ease. If you do not have access to a hot air source, you may dip the tube ends into boiling water and achieve the same hot source to make the ends pliable or soft. If this method is used, you can insert the HDPE tubing ends only as trying to use the same method of using the coupling it might slip and you get a burn! Beware. If you purchase the tubing at Lowes, Home Depot etc.. it is typically sold in 100ft rolls. You can however search the net and purchase by the foot but beware of cost so please shop around. One more hint, when your ends are installed on the coupling and still warm, rotate your hoop on hard surface and reshape your circle on hard ground by rolling it back and forth on edge until nice and round. Thanks for the video!!

I saw what looked like a homemade hoop in a store today, only I couldn't see any seam where the coupling was! Do you think it's possible they melted the pvc together over the coupling and sanded it down? They might have hidden it with tape, somehow, but I don't think so Btw I love your videos!
@hoopsmiles
@hoopsmiles 4 жыл бұрын
If the hoop was homemade, then I doubt they melted the piping over the coupling. I feel like that would be way too much unnecessary work for someone just making hoops at home, where some tape could be effective enough to do the job. But who knows. I remember meeting a hoop maker who would use a blowtorch to make hoops. Not really my preference, but it worked for her making hoops.

I would recommend using a higher psi and bigger piping. You can also cut the hoop into 4 sections and add use brass couplings to join each section instead of plastic ones. The metal couplings definitely add weight to the hoop.

I want to re-wrap it with new tape, but was wondering if you'd suggest that I take off the old tape first? Or can I just wrap it on top of the old one? Also, if I want to use two alternating colors, would I wrap the entire hoop with one color first, and then wrap it with the second one in the gaps, or what do you suggest? - Thanks ahead!

Perhaps, that might be for another video. Lol! The detachable hoops definitely take more work to make and more supplies, such as a drill for drilling holes in the hoop, a rivet gun and rivets, snap push buttons, and sand paper or a belt sander. I won't go into detail in text here, but I might consider the possibility of making a video about how to do it someday, which may be a longer video than this lengthy tutorial here. I'm trying to remember, but there was a video out there, it might be the Spinterz, that has a good detachable hoop making tutorial.

I’ve seen videos where they use 2 connectors. So it’s actually 2 equal sizes of tubing connected with 2 barbs. Then it can be twisted and folded into half the circle size. I’m having trouble finding the right kind of barb connector. My local big box stores mostly carry barbs with a piece that protrudes from the middle. I did finally find one that looked like it would work, but the 3/4” barb fits loosely into the 3/4” irrigation tubing. I didn’t have to heat the ends of the tube to get the barb in. But it’s not tight. The tube slides right off.

Thanks for the video! I made my first hoop- 3/4in, 160 psi but it still feels very light and is really challenging to keep up, though I've had success with other hoops. Are there tricks to help with this as far as the size of the hoops or should I try weighing it down via metal couplings?
@hoopsmiles
@hoopsmiles 3 жыл бұрын
Did you make the hoop diameter size wide enough? It also depends on how much you are struggling with the hoop. If you spin it and it instantly goes down, then this may not work. But if you spin it and you struggle a little, you could just take 3 small items that add a little extra weight to the hoop and secure them safely with tape equally around the hoop, making an equilateral triangle if you were to draw lines between the items. For the items themselves, you could just find 3 rocks of similar size and weight outside or use some washers, or fishing weights, etc. The whole point of this is to help you be successful with this hoop. Once you are successful, you can remove the weights. This is not meant to be a permanent solution. If you are really struggling with getting it, then you may want to start over and make a new hoop. If you are using 3/4 inch piping 160 psi, more importantly than the weight is having a larger diameter size. A 160 psi 3/4 inch hoop that is taped, about 40 inches in diameter could possibly be around 1.5 pounds, which is already quite a bit of weight. So adding extra weight may not help you too much more, but making a larger hoop can.

Yes the size of the hoop does matter. Without seeing you hula hoop, then I can't determine if that size would work for you. Depending on how you store the hoop, the piping could change shape over time. It all depends. Weather could also impact that as well, if you store it outside

Unfortunately, I haven't seen too many instances where you can buy the tubing just to make one hoop. Though, even as a beginner hooper, I recommend having different hoops of varying sizes because different hoop sizes have different purposes. If you are looking for just one hoop it would probably be less to buy a hoop. If you are looking to spend the least amount of money, you could also watch my tutorial on how to make a hula hoop out of cardboard, which costs next to nothing.

Will this type of take scrape off when hooping with your foot on concrete?
@hoopsmiles
@hoopsmiles 4 жыл бұрын
If you scrape the hoop up against concrete it can scratch the tape, but I have done so many events on concrete where I teach little kids and the hoops are constantly hitting the concrete. Especially the gaffer tape, it has a really good shelf life, even when hitting concrete, but over time, especially if you throw the hoop into a backspin roll on concrete, it can start to ware the hoop tape down.

@hoopsmiles
@hoopsmiles 4 жыл бұрын
For the shaker sound, though I tend not to make those hoops, but I do remember adding dried beans to a hoop, which seemed to work well. To make the hoop weighted, cut the hoop up into 4 equal pieces. Instead of using plastic coupling inserts to connect the hoop, use 4 brass or metal couplings to connect the hoops. The metal couplings are much heavier in weight and will definitely turn it into a weighted hoop.

great info. about how long did you heat the ends with the paint dryer?
@hoopsmiles
@hoopsmiles 4 жыл бұрын
The paint dryer, it depends on how close you have the dryer to the tubing. It could also depend on how hot your paint dryer gets. I don't know how long is necessary in your case. Using a paint dryer since it gets way hotter than a hair dryer, you don't want to do too long or you could melt the piping, making it deformed beyond use. In my opionion, if you are not sure about how long, it's always better to under heat the piping vs over heat it, since you can go back and heat it again. Heating part is really just meant to make it easier to slide the coupling in. Worst case scenario if you under heat it and the coupling gets stuck, you could use a rubber mallet and pound the coupling in to make it fit.

How/ what kind of do you add weights or beads inside the hoop?
@hoopsmiles
@hoopsmiles 3 жыл бұрын
If you want to add weights inside the hoop, the best way is to use steel couplings instead of plastic. If you cut the hoop up into 4 equal sections and add the steel couplings, such as 3/4", in some cases it can add over a pound extra to the hoop. You can also use flexible weight strips and tape them to the outside of the hoop as well to add weight. If you do add extra weights, you might want to avoid certain metals for health reasons. For beads, though I don't like how it sounds and feels, I've even added dried garbanzo beans to a hoop before.

Follow Blazing Star's advice. Using hot water was the next option I would going to suggest. But if that's not an option, you can pound a coupling into the tubing using a mallet, which is another option.

what is the best way to prevent the hoop tape from lifting up?
@hoopsmiles
@hoopsmiles 3 жыл бұрын
Depends on the tape you are using. The metallic fancy tapes just don't have much stickiness to them. I would recommend using gaffer tape to seal in other tapes that come off easy, such as the fancier metallic tapes.

Hey hoopsmiles! I decided that our family needed hoops so we could get through this pandemic. I bought some blue pex pipe but I can’t find a connector that works. No amount of boiling expanded the pex enough. Now I have 50 ft of pipe and zero hula hoops. HELP!
@hoopsmiles
@hoopsmiles 4 жыл бұрын
What is the width of the pipe, such as 1/2, 3/4 inch, etc? I recommend buying a plastic coupling insert made to fit PEX pipes, preferably plastic connectors, to fit the size of your piping. If you bought 1/2 inch piping then you would want to buy a 1/2" coupling. PEX piping is pretty common in hardware stores so you might be able to just go to a local hardware store to buy the coupling. Let me know if that was helpful or you need more information.

My first hoop came out not completely round, it’s a little ovalish. Is this normal or a defect of the part of pvc I used. It was 3/4 inch 125 psi
@hoopsmiles
@hoopsmiles 4 жыл бұрын
This is a lesson I learned when first making hoops. Whenever you buy a new roll of piping cut off about 1 to 2 feet of the ends or the end pipe that is not curved before you make hoops. If you dont cut off the ends and make your first hoop with the piping as is, you will get an oval shaped hoop. There is nothing wrong with the oval hoop. You'll still be able to use it. To answer your question what you describe is normal if you dont cut off the straight ends of the piping.

@hoopsmiles

I recommend checking out identi-tape. They pretty much carry any kind of hoop tape you can imagine, including gaffer tape that is high quality. You can buy gaffer tape other places too for probably cheaper. But sometimes these cheap gaffer tapes are not as thick and are see through.
