Louise is delighted to present the technique of” ply paper.” The name refers to the layering process used to make plywood when a number of layers of veneer sheets of wood are layered and glued with the grain of the wood in alternating directions in each adjacent layer. This creates a thin yet strong wooden sheet.
The ply paper technique allows a mix of substrates; paper, threads, fabrics, paints, varnishes and mark-making which can all coalesce to provide differing attributes to affect the work. The result is beguilingly complex and yet has a wonderfully simple process. ENJOY X
The “ply paper” process incorporates the layering to create strength with the addition of elements to add interest and texture.
In this video, Louise will show how she utilises the ply paper technique that she has developed from work inspired by the process and idea of Momigami and Joomchi.
There will be a series of videos that progress in steps through the wonderful possibilities allowed by this intriguing technique. For more of Louise's work please see:-

You can use a damp paintbrush around the edges of your image. It will just gently pull away and leave a soft blendable edge too. (I am terrible with fussy cutting) I am loving your paper making ideas. 💕

Hi, Louise! I love your creative ideas! You can 'cut' tissue paper with a small, round wet brush. Those water brushes are perfect. 'Paint' a line where you want to cut with the tip of the wet brush. Once wet, tissue tears very easily. It leaves a softer edge than cutting with scissors, too. Thanks for more great tips and ideas! Su

Hi again Judy, so glad you like the abstracts as that is where I will focus going forward. I will be incorporating the fabrics with these pieces, and I think that is what you may be more interested in. I love the multiple references contained within a fabric. They impart such a list of lateral meanings that can be subtly referenced within an art work. Again good luck with all your endeavours and hopefully hear from you again X All the very best Louise

@LouiseJannetta Жыл бұрын
Hi Lilly, thanks. Glad you are enjoying the process. I got information from the internet. Traditionally Mulberry paper was used. This paper has longer fibres than Western papers, typically pulped wood papers. In the mulberry paper, the bark of the mulberry bush is not pulped to a fine pulp but left with relatively long filaments and then paned on into the mesh sieve. The folding and creasing will also have some felting effect (I think, see the Korean art of Joomchi) and help strengthen the papers. I experimented with Western wood pulp papers to see if the process transferred. The papers shrink when folded and creased, which might suggest that they become dense, but I don't think the pulp is felted in any way. The resultant papers have unique qualities, and I have used them for their aesthetic qualities. I hope this all helps to inform you a little, X 😀

FYI: 22:45 Just recently, I watched someone turn regular paper into "faux vellum" by using an iron, and ironing on shaved beeswax. (iron was set at the "silk" setting, no steam). Didn't seem to harm the iron's surface either. Apparently, oil based "faux vellum" can bleed onto other papers, but the beeswax doesn't do that, which is important in journals.

If you use PVA use it diluted or use Bookbinding PVAC glues, they remain more flexible, but normal PVA diluted will do as well.
