Perfect! I've been looking at drying yeast as the ones I'm using seem to be getting frighteningly expensive. Someone suggested Slants, and a few KZbin vids later I find this. Cheers Dude, again!

Great video. I took a class at Sibel about yeast management and learned about this... Great to see it "in action" The rule of thumb was grow the yeast by the power of 10's.... so like you said.... 100ml then up to a 1000ml....ect . Great job. Cheers!

One thing nobody seems to mention about plastic tubes is get PET tubes, not polystyrene like I did... They melted into banana shapes when I whacked them in the baby bottle steriliser 😂. Got some PET ones on the way with HDPE caps which are heat / pressure cooker / autoclave safe. Really awesome vid though man, as always

This is the next step in my homebrewing journey for sure, Thanks, top drawer info👌How long will they last in the fridge? is there a possibility of freezing via this method?

General consensus is you should look to use or re-slant them within 6 months but I have built starters up from them after over a year in the fridge without any issues at all. I don’t believe you can freeze them but you can extend lifespan by filling the airspace with sterile water or even longer (several years at least) if you use mineral oil. I have never used either of those methods personally but those are proper lab methods apparently!

Very informative and interesting video. I do like the updraft idea with the open flame. Have you tried this technique to try and capture and grow wild yeasts?

Abbey Homebrew thanks mate, I haven't done anything on the wild side yet but I'm sure it could work, probably be easier with an agar plate rather than a slant but once stuff started growing it might make it easier to isolate individual colonies from other stuff that appears as opposed to the usual open jar of wort method

I haven’t tbh I have kept slants for over a year without adding anything to them and they have regrown fine so I don’t really see the need for it at the moment

When you add the wort to the agar and shake it is the idea that the agar stays in tact but you just pull some yeast off into solution? Or are you trying to break the agar up and dissolve it into the starter?
@DudesBrews
@DudesBrews 2 жыл бұрын
Good question aim is just to loosen the yeast off the slant, you do have to be a bit careful not to shake it so much that the agar itself comes away from the tube

Hi do you just use the pressure cooker to boil the agar mix?
@DudesBrews
@DudesBrews 4 жыл бұрын
yeah, the plastic tubes are already sterile, you would probably be fine just boiling normally but I already had the cooker so it makes extra certain
