Learn how to make Italian carnival treats that are crispy, crumbly, and dangerously good! These are also known as chiacchiere, frappe, or cenci, depending on the region. They are easy to make and will bring Venice to your kitchen!
This is also known as the pastry that makes a thousand bubbles!
These treats are called frappe in Italy, but they have different names in different regions and countries. They are made with a simple dough of flour, egg, water, salt, and baking powder, flavored with some limoncello (optional). The dough is rolled out very thin, cut into strips, and fried until golden and crispy. Then, they are sprinkled with icing sugar and ready to enjoy!
You will need the following ingredients:
• All-purpose flour - 1 ⅛ cup (140 grams)
• One egg
• Water - 1 tsp.
• A pinch of salt
• Baking powder - ¼ tsp.
• Optional: limoncello - 1 tsp. (replace with any other strong spirit or just 1 tsp. of water)
• Oil for frying
• Icing sugar for dusting
You will end up with lots of small crispy gondolas that will transport you to the carnival atmosphere of Venice. They are perfect for snacking, sharing, or enjoying with a cup of coffee or tea.
