My cousins boyfriend is Mexican (we are jamaican), he’s never had Jamaican food until he met us and I was telling him about how he needs to try sorrel and he didn’t know what it was. When I explained to him what it was he said wait you mean Jamaica? I was like what🤨 he said that sounds like a drink we make call Jamaica and explained how they made it and sure enough it was sorrel. LOL I thought it was hilarious that Hispanic people call it Jamaica 😂

Do not mind people who say that sorrel is Hibiscus. If you see the trees you' ll notice they look similar, a Hibuscus tree grows bigger than a Sorrel tree, the Okra is also related, both Okra and Sorre, has a bud, Hibiscus has a flower. Hibiscus comes with flowers in the color, red, pink, yellow, white, peach, the red one is the color that is used to make drinks and it has the color like the sorrel, maybe that is why people interchange the name. I live in an Island where Sorrel, Hibiscus and Okra grows and I definately know the differences. They are related but different.

As a child I used to follow my Grandmama around on her ranch. My favorite thing was when she would show me a new fruits or vegetables and let me help her pick them. The most delicious, tart thing I ate was Roselle, she said it's also called Sorrell. I would pick them and eat the petals one by one. So tart and yummy. I miss those days and my Grandmama.

Everyone or country makes their sorrel differently. I add my sugar to the hot water a long with an orange cut up in it with a cinnamon stick, anise star, cloves and pimento. Next day I sive it and add my wine and alcohol. The left overs I use to make my the glaze for the Christmas ham and chutney for the ham. The reconstituted sorrel juice can be used in your fresh cranberry sauce

People this is the original way to make sorrel: Sorrel Ginger Cinnamon sticks Red label wine White rum Sugar Pimento seeds Method: Crush ginger add it and cinnamon sticks to pot with water and bring it to a boil. Then add sorrel (dry or fresh never use both). This is not something to stir every minute Let it boils for a good 5 minutes. Let it sits overnight. Strain and sweeten with sugar and add wine and pimento seeds. Serve over ice.

Sasha my lovely, you have the best parents ever however I would like you to know that sorrel is not Hibiscus 🌺 there are many kinds of hibiscus but sorrel is not one. Please check it out, I grow up with both sorrel and hibiscus. Your Mom displays the real fresh sorrel. Happy holidays to you all, God bless

In Jamaica sorrel and hibiscus are different but when you look it up on the plant app sorrel comes back as a type or strain of hibiscus that is called roselle.

I wish there was a way to find fresh sorrel in Alexandria, Virginia. Sorrel is one of my all time favorite drinks. Thankfully, dried sorrel is available all year so we delight in its goodness when ever we celebrate. Thank you for sharing your recipe. Incidentally, I tried your black cake a few weeks ago...it was perfect. I was able to get four cakes using a pound of fruit and flour, etc,. I baked three per your directions and steamed the fourth. All of them turned amazingly beautiful. I began following you when I saw your “Jamaican Black Cake” KZbin video. Blessings for healthy and successful 2021. 💜

The most amazing drink ever is a good sorrel/hibiscus drink. If you add a bit too much sugar apart from adding rum you can add ice when you serve,I love a lot of ice it’s so refreshing and super delicious…❤️❤️❤️
