I use a gas stove and hold the jiffy pop above the flame. Almost every kernel pops and no burn. Another way is to place a cast iron skillet on the gas stove, let that heat up and place the jiffy pop on it.
@Blue-hf7xt3 жыл бұрын
I could have used this info 50 years ago. I remember the TV commercials made it look so easy. I believe I only bought 1 JP, burned it and did not want to buy another one. I had no idea it was still available. I found one at an R&B house pantry and I am going to give it a try. I thought, hey look on youtube and see if someone has some tips. The house has an electric stove.

This was how we all made popcorn at home before popcorn makers came out (another electronic monster to clutter up the kitchen with) and, finally, microwave popcorn. It was that or a frying pan on the stove. Jiffy Pop was much easier to do as long as you didn't scorch it.

Jiffy Pop has a unique odor. I loved it. My dad also made popcorn in a steel popper over the fireplace.
@DoubleDogDare548 жыл бұрын
As kids we did the fireplace popcorn as well but without much success. The "popcorn maker" we had was a steel container with a metal screen over the top, mounted on a long handle. We always used pot holders for safety reasons. There wasn't much control of the heat, sticking that metal gizmo over an open fire. The results were spotty at best.

Followed what you said to do any not much of it popped at all and while I was waiting for more to pop it started burning. But I did exactly what you said. I may have gotten a defective one. Cause when I opened it, it seemed there wasn’t very many kernels to begin with.
@inkey210 жыл бұрын
The was I have done it for 45 years is.....on an electric stove burner turn the burner to the highest setting.....let the coils get red hot, put the jiffy pop on the burner and shake it back and fourth like crazy it will start popping pretty fast and the foil will swell up.....when the popping dies down take it off the stove and open it immediately to let the steam out. You want to let the steam out as fast as possible or it will make the pop corn soggy

If I do buy Jiffy Pop (and I don't think I will since I fear the steam coming from it will set off the fire alarm in my apartment), I will remember your wonderful tutorial on how to cook the Jiffy Pop.
@stoppedsnoring5 жыл бұрын
I know what you mean about steam! There's a smoke detector near one of our bathrooms and if we forget to use the vent while taking a shower sometimes after opening the door it will trigger the alarm just from the excess humidity in the air.
@Seemsayin3 жыл бұрын
I know everyone has their way of making it. So, I can't really fault the uploader. As long as he's happy... Just letting it sit there, with medium heat though? I'll agree that high heat makes it cook WAY too fast, and usually burns it at the bottom. You will ALWAYS get unpopped kernels. No way around it. But, there's a happy medium. I've found, after doing this quite a few times... the best setting (for me), on an electric range is when the dial is set just barely under 7. I don't wait for it to preheat. Pull the cover off, sit it on top of the burner. Wait till it starts sizzling, and then.... don't stop shaking (in every direction) until it's done. Low heat is just as bad as high heat, in that the kernels don't pop fully. And the longer it's on the stove, the more the kernels will shrink. When my tin is done, the foil is practically busting out of it. No kidding. But, this is MY stove, in MY kitchen. So... results may vary. JiffyPop is BY FAR, superior to any microwave brand out there. Microwaves are for convenience. You wouldn't cook a steak in a microwave, would you? The same holds true for pop corn. The microwave sucks the life out of it. The moment I tasted JiffyPop was the last time I ever attempted to throw a bag of corn into the micro. No comparison.

@smh99028 жыл бұрын
Electric stoves all vary significantly on their settings. A "medium" of one stove may be the "high" of another. If you're melting the pan, which is made of aluminum, than that means your coils are exceeding 1200 F. Try it on the lowest setting. If that doesn't work, place a steel/cast iron pan on the burner and then jiffypop on the pan.

I'm not making fun or anything, but all I ever hear about people using Jiffy Pop is them having issues and burning it. Folks, you are supposed to constantly stir and shake it while it cooks. Circular clockwise or counterclockwise motions directly on or slightly above the heat like you're panning for gold, just don't turn it (I like hovering it because the popcorn tin can scratch my stove grates).

Another tip - I take a hypodermic filled with a weak 60/40 solution of deionized water/French's Yellow Mustard, and *carefully* insert the needle at the four compass points of the foil cover just at the edge; approximately 5cc should be injected at each point, then you SLOWLY rotate the package so the solution spreads evenly. Place the Jiffy Pop in your freezer overnight to bind the solution in place, and when you're ready to prepare, pre-heat the package on low heat for no more than one minute - this 'breaks the form' of the frozen solution. Next, grasp the package by the handle and bring it down forcefully on a countertop two or three times to hasten the chemical reaction which started with the pre-heating process. After this, you can place the package back on the burner as normal. With my method, no shaking is required - THAT'S the beauty of it. p.s. - several packages can be prepared/frozen this way, so you can always have a batch 'ready to go'!
