I was a KFC manager back in 80’s, when stores were just switching to pre made jars of the dressing. So let me drop the two secrets the Colonel put into the slaw… Miracle Whip & Tarragon vinegar. Others have noted the lack of fresh chopped onions, not powder, in your recipe. We would mix it in the morning and package it the following day. Hope this adds to everyone’s coleslaw.

O.K. I made this yesterday, and I would say it is darned close! I do taste a bit of celery seed in KFC coleslaw, and I dissected some KFC coleslaw (not that I'm a fanatic or anything) and found that there is Diced Onion in it. So, I added 1/2 diced onion and 1/4 tsp. of celery seed, and WOW! So close, that you could not jam a playin' card between the recipes! Keep up the good work and I'll keep eating it.

Your version is very similar to mine. I also use the store-bought pack of cabbage/carrot mixture. Instead of Apple Cider Vinegar, I use a splash of Zesty Italian Dressing. I also add sugar, salt, and pepper. Plus I add my secret (until now) ingredient: garlic powder. Everyone who has eaten my slaw has raved about it, saying it was the best coleslaw they've ever eaten. I never measure the garlic powder. I just sprinkle some across the top then stir it in. Then repeat 3 times. I'm definitely going to try your version, so that in case I like it and don't have all the ingredients to make my version, I can make yours. Thanks for sharing your recipe.

Made this a couple of times and it's the closest I've ever had to KFC slaw. The only thing I changed was I halfed the apple cider vinegar (1.5 tablespoons). I bought the store-bought cabbage and hand-chopped it to a finer texture (like KFC). I thought it was perfect. Had company over for dinner and their eyes popped when they got their first taste. :) They insisted on the recipe.

Here's a tip I discovered: I bought powdered heavy cream as a back-up for my morning coffee. Well, when I add that to mayonnaise, I get a creamy dressing that won't separate the way it will when you use fresh cream or 1/2 and 1/2. It doesn't need sugar or extra vinegar.

I use to help manage one of KFC's restaurants, ours was a smaller one but always very busy with customers lining up out the doors and around the building. One of the reasons was because for just a few cents more our customers could get shrimp in their coleslaw. We use to use the tiny little ready to use salad type shrimp but due to the particular flavors used in their coleslaw dressing it was an amazing combination.

My friend, I worked at Kentucky Fried Chicken for 5 years in the sixties. We had to make all the slaw ourselves. We made it in white plastic garbage cans. Here's the very simple recipe: shredded cabbage and a few shredded carrots for color. (we used a large metal electric shredder) Then, pour MARZETTI'S slaw dressing over the shredded cabbage and carrots. Now you must let it set overnight in a cooler before you serve it, so all the dressing is absorbed by the cabbage and carrots. That's it! Cabbage, carrots, Marzetti's slaw dressing. That's it! (and to me, it's the very best tasting slaw I've eaten in my life.) REAL SIMPLE! 🙂

I had a neighbor who had three KFC's and, of course, she would never give the recipe to the cole slaw but she did say it had something you would never think of. I think that ingredient was horseradish sauce. Something which southeners did use but something us northerners did not. Most other ingredients the same as most cole slaw: chopped cabbage, onions, carrots. terragon vinegar, sugar, salt, pepper, oil. When sauce is mixed add in some horseradish sauce tsp to tbsp to taste. I think the little bite of that horseradish does the KFC trick. Even if not, this is a good additive anyway.

Their coleslaw is better than their mashed potatoes and gravy.

You could have just dumped the shredded cabbage mix into the sauce instead of messing up another red bowl😅

1 tablespoon sugar would do it. 5 is beyond excessive for that small amount of Cole slaw

I've eaten at KFC three times, each time the breading slid off the chicken leaving greasy meat on the inside. NEVER Again.

I tasted it after I made it and holy cow, I had to rinse it off, that much mayonnaise is simply not needed, so I use only one dollop teaspoon next time and I will never use the amount that he called for

It all depends on if you want it to taste flat or tangy. I use my mother's recipe. She never measured the amount of miracle whip or white vinegar, but it always tasted the same. How much of the "goop" she made depended on the size of the cabbage she started with.

Unfortunately tastes nothing like the UK KFC slaw! I know Thai KFC slaw is completely different with peas in it! So guess US and UK are different too..

NOTE: I have seen many recipes for this coleslaw, some having buttermilk, lemon juice, pepper, etc., but I have yet to taste ONE , other than THIS recipe... that to me, is identical to the one used in the restaurants. --- I haven't found one yet that calls for what my grandma said was the secret to this.... Taragon vinegar! 3-4 cups finely chopped cabbage (About 1 medium head) 1/4 cup grated carrot 1/4 cup finely chopped onion 2/3 cup Miracle Whip 3 Tablespoons Taragon vinegar (secret) 1/2 cup sugar 2-1/2 teaspoons salt Mix and let set at least 24 hours! I have made this recipe to serve 500 people twice, 400 people twice, and 250 people several times. It is one of my standard recipes for weddings and anniversary celebrations. _______________________

Nice easy recipe. But a bit sweet for my son and me, so we put 3 1/2 TBS sugar instead of 5. To a bag of chopped cabbage and carrots we added finely chopped onions, chopped celery and tomatoes. Added some.celery seeds, too. Mmmm boy!

Ok, six years later.... I made this exactly the way he showed. After maybe one hour chilling, I tasted it. I thought I was going to die. No drama here lol. Too sweet and the taste of the cider was over powering. Yuck. For some weird reason I put it back in the fridge and tried it after couple of days. OMG it was the best. The cider taste was gone and not too sweet. 👍
