I feel Martina didn't stress the most important part of the Kimbap making process. My first few Kimbap rolls didn't out so good. but after my 2nd roll I sang Martina's "Toasty rice fingers" song as I made the Kimbap. They turned out much better. That step is very important.

For future kimbap makers (Martina most likely already know this since there's so many critics on the comment section LOL) 1. To make your kimbap more delicious; add some sesame oil and salt to your rice. It adds really nice flavor and I DONT go back to using plain rice... i just cant LOL 2. Only add rice to 2/3 of the seaweed. It doesn't make a THICKK kimbap and it shouldn't have a problem "spilling out". 3. Putting water on the edge to seal is a good idea but kimbaps also will stay in place when laying it on the side where the edge is. Just laying it down on the edge and keeping it there for a couple minutes will keep it together. 4. I think the most important ingredient for kimbaps are the pickled radish... even if i have no ingredients left but I still have pickled radish, the kimbap still tastes good d:

why are you not rinsing/washing your rice??
@Tehmora10 жыл бұрын
I believe that with rice cookers, you really don't need to, and if you do, you have to take care not to over soak it, as it can turn mushy instead of soft but firm (al dente?). Your rice needs texture, and the rice cooker is especially made to do that.
@bhellapark10 жыл бұрын
we use rice cookers???i think it's the type of rice they use..but most likely i see most of the time koreans still clean or rinse their rise before cooking it

@ilishazana69885 жыл бұрын
Yep. I’m asian and i can guarantee you’re supposed to wash the rice before cooking. God knows what’s in them during production so it’s better to wash them. Washing also removes some starch, making them less sticky and mushy. For short grain rice, it’s advisable to wash only once as it’s normally eaten a little bit sticky.

Well Kimbap and Sushi ARE kind of similar. They basically have the same principal. Rice roll wrapped in seaweed with things inside. I suppose the big difference is Japan has a ton of variations and Korea only has that one roll.
@ちらし-c8i9 жыл бұрын
***** modern gimbap is extremely influenced by japanese nori maki! but the act of rolling laver with rice and ingredients are indigenous to both countries. however, gimbap stayed as a commoner's food while japan's sushi (which also was a commoners food) kinda became branched out :D

A few other differences that add up to make kimbap taste differently overall to maki zushi, besides using plain rice instead of vinegared rice, are: •The rice is sometimes seasoned with sesame oil if not left plain. •The texture, thickness and taste of the Korean seaweed sheet is different to Japanese nori. •The outside of the roll is brushed with sesame oil, which imparts a distinct flavour, different to sushi. •They are eaten plain, without soy sauce and wasabi.

@BonnieChun9 жыл бұрын
it honestly probably doesn't matter. i have use many different types of rice to make kimbap before; though i havent used jasmine. because it is a non sticky rice, i would just recommend to reallyyyyyy tightly roll it up so it'll have a less chance to fall apart; also maybe add a little more rice than normal. also MAYBEE add a little more water than normal. when cooking it.. Add some sesame oil to the rice as well as salt; it's for flavor but maybe the oil will help somehow .. lol i'm just trying to think different ideas; it may or may not work

A lot of people don't wash their rice. Like I don't and I find that it actually gives it a bit of a nutty-er flavor. Plus washing rice is something that most people don't know about if they are not a chef or from Asia. It is something a lot of north-Americans don't know about I've found. So yeah you can wash the rice or you can not. It actually doesn't matter that much. Plus a lot of rice is already pre-washed then dried again. So the washing just removes rice dust. But hey- maybe that's just where I get my rice.

I don't see the difference. Its SUSHI! You may be calling some seaweed sheets a different name, as they are Nori for Sushi, but they are still seaweed sheets. With Sushi, you have a variety of ingredients that can go on the inside, just like Kimbap. I don't see the difference. Nori, rice, various ingredients, roll it up with the mat and slice. SUSHI!!

Lee Gi hyun , I don't think Kimbap because I have one Korean restaurant in my area and u have 4 Sushi restaurant s. If I said to my friends, 'Want to go out for Kimbap?' @shellyb82139 жыл бұрын
South Korea and Japan are very close together. Right next to each other. So what are you talking about that they are from different parts of the world? I don't see how it is closed minded or idiotic of me to think they are similar. Its is not rude and you are taking this far to seriously. Its food. It is similar food. There's nothing wrong with me pointing out the similarly and finding humor in Martina comments about them being different.
@shellyb82139 жыл бұрын
Lee Gi hyun You are being ridiculous! Just preposterous! No one, besides you, is offended or uncomfortable with the simple idea of Kimbap and Sushi being similar. @domochanlove11 жыл бұрын
Martina, if you move the cooked rice to a large glass bowl, and pour little bit of sesame oil and salt and stir it to cool off, it won't make the seaweed so soggy when you spread the rice on seaweed, not to mention it makes the rice taste more yummy :D
