How to Make Lace Paper Netting

Today we learn how to make lacey paper netting using paper, twine, and homemade paste from cornflour. It is great for wild pages to use in art journals, collage, and other mixed media projects.
This is a technique that can be originally found in several places and this is my version. Be sure that you take it and run with it and make it your own!

I think I'm going to try this with twill tape, of which I happen to have a large roll of. As you say, free art supplies. Yay!

Can you explain to me, what is twill tape?

Twill tape is used to reinforce seams in suits and or other clothing made of fabric which may ravel I have a whole spool left from. When I was making clerical vestments. It is made of cotton and come in various widths. Mine is half inch wide.

It's never ending what you can do with these papers. I want to make a room divider with embroidery threads in them. I made a lamp shade for my bathroom night light last year. lol. So much fun. Yowza, a room divider. That is a brilliant idea and why not. That lampshade sounds charming, too. These do remind me of old-timey Japanese lanterns. Speaking of dye, I just bought some dried barberries at my local Indian market and am about to soak them and see if they work for dye. Fingers crossed!

these are so cute!! and artsy and useful and so very ecological!! I was wondering how can I use the suspicious, plasticky twine I get with the egg cartons from the market (30 pc, large trays). I can also use leftovers from macrame projects. and as for the paper?!! I can use just about anything!! including failures from the momigami technique I learned from you [ and now I got to the part where you show how you made a net from your momigami pieces ]. can you imagine the effect of some dark paper netting like this, doubled up on pastel pages? or at least some light pictures/designs/ilustrations and now you're talking, I feel like trying a "kinked up" yarn as base... 🤔 it might come up even more organic, and lacy, and interesting 🤭 as usual, thanks for sharing!!

What great ideas, Irina. I also tried the kinked up threads. I just let them fall in loops and glued the paper over it. The results were okay but good enough that I think it's worth trying and working on. Also, using two tones or colours of paper so that you are pulling through and shredding both and the fringe mixing together and revealing shades. Thanks for comparing notes! Kelly

Thank you for showing this. A lot of potential there. I will use twine for makes that will go on the covers of my journals (and on the outside surface of my storage boxes) and thin thread that will go inside of my journals. I will also try my favorite technique of going with acrylic paint on all the edges (outside the whole piece and inside of each hole). I will apply the paint with the small plastic bottle with needle tip (I bought many on amazon and am truly obsessed).

Fascinating experiments. I surprisingly like the way the momigami papers tore. You used the same cornstarch paste for those? I wonder what doing one side with one type of paper and another side with another might look like. You give lots of ideas and inspiration - thank you!!

Hi Judy. Yes, I think Rule 1 of paper arts should be: don't forget to turn the page you are working on over to see what it looks like from the back, because the back may very well become your front. I did use the same paste for the heavier papers. It was completely a shot in the dark trial and error and I am not unhappy with how it is turning out!

I did enjoy the video. thank you for sharing your techniques with us. I learned almost the same thing years ago with a friend of mine. but I am always looking for more interesting ways. one technique I enjoy is using paper towels dumped on organic dye, stitching them, and using embroidered fabric as a background. I like the idea of the homemade past (like when I was a child my mother made glue with water and flour) and will try it next time. thank you again.

I can really see these papers combined with fabric and fiber. In fact the first thing I thought of when you made it into a bracelet was why not a shirt? I think some of these would look good backed with cheesecloth. I have to say hat I really liked the one with newsprint and the photo of the girl, I could tell you weren't that crazy about it but I'm imaging using illustrated book pages using the holes placed strategiically to tell a story. Oh Kelly this is what I love about your videos they really spark my creativity. I wonder if you added some mica to the paste . . . .

Hi Sheryll. and thanks for these ideas. Mica! That definitely needs to be tried. The thing about the piece with the newspaper is I do like it but as you suggest, for a different kind of project. I am now looking at my old papers for ones with portraits and key words that can be manipulated. They would make cool altered books or mother projects, maybe a stand-alone collage with the viewer filling in the story. As for a shirt, go get 'em! You wouldn't be able to wash it, though, but as an art piece it sounds terrific. I was thinking of a necklace/collar or maybe even a headpiece, like an avant garde fascinator. Hi Sabine, I like that cheesecloth idea. I am also going to try integrating cloth and paper, adding some gauze between layers of paper and seeing where that goes. 😺

Hello and welcome, Becky. Now that is funny you should ask because I JUST added try-starch-with-colour to my to do list. Also, I have used this, adding a mordant such as alum, for making paste paper which is paste with acrylic paint and it really, really pops. Thanks for touching base! Kelly

Absolutely 😂, And this technique actually works! Even my glue with plain flour, water and a pinch of table salt for preservative, so should last longer than just a few days. No click bait .😂🇭🇲💖💖💖

Hi Kelly! I love, love love your videos and content style. I may try this on an "onion bag", mesh produce bag! much finer, but that just means more holes! The bracelet idea is cute, just dont make a matching dress with all those holes unless they are strategically placed!

I would love to see the twine or threads placed down onto the bottom layer in the form of a tree like the other artist did with the thread. that would become a really cool ‘family tree’ journal page. Have you tried making a design like that leaving the holes in a design other than a checkerboard pattern?

Hi Holly, not yet but I am still just learning it myself. As I said, I have been so inspired by Ines' art that I am looking to do a deeper dive into it now that I can make a version of the paper tearing (Her's seem to be sewn rather than glued.)

Hi Tracy. I am not using gel medium today as it is important to be able to tear and distress the paper and gel medium would only reinforce the paper, making it harder to distress. Hope this helps.
