I keep thinking how amazed I am at others who can speak more than one language. I really look up to them. This keeps me going and learning. When I was stationed in Belgium, I could not speak French. But my wife learned very quickly, and whenever someone would speak French to me, I didn't understand. I remember thinking how I felt when my wife came to my rescue and spoke French and saved me. To me, that is so cool, and I admired her so much! It's a kind of super hero power. Sometimes I also get a little discouraged, but don't give up! I have been memorizing flash cards for about a year now, and it seems like I'm not making any headway, but then, something interesting happened. I have discovered that some of the words I memorize, have become "burned in" over time, and now I'll actually understand parts of a Russian conversation. I love listening to a Russian show called Лучше всех! on KZbin. It features talented Russian children and I seem to understand children more because they speak more slowly and emphasize their words better. It's helpful to read their lips. The camera really gets in close to their mouths. I hope this helps!

@@blue572 a good group is Rauf and faik. They make a lot of love style hip hop and it’s slower which makes for better listening and repetition within the lyrics. Look up there song вечера (vechera) if u need to type it in english

I've always found the opportunities to converse in Russian the most fun part of the learning process. And as such, they have kept me going in learning the language.

I taught my Third Graders how to sing Silent Night in Russian. They picked it up quickly and now I can sing a song in Russian.

@@zavulon422 Haha! I can see that. The suffering is why I love it, it brings out the most unique and true of human characteristics. My first Russian grammar book emphasized, do not begin study by reading anything by Dostoevsky or Gogol, as they are the despair of translators.

Playing video games with Russian audio and English subtitles is helpful. There is usually a good mixture of simple and complex dialogue

thank you for this video!! i've been cracking away at Russian for two and a half years now (i've been watching your channel for most of that time! it's been mega helpful) and I always struggle with thinking that I should give up, or that I'm not smart enough to become properly fluent. but the biggest thing i've learned, after a couple years, is that dedication/consistency really is the most important ingredient. I think this video has the perfect advice to combat negative thoughts about language learning, at least from my point of view. For me, following my interests is personally the biggest factor to keeping my enthusiasm up. It's not like I learned English from grammar textbooks, anyway - I haven't had a class focused on grammar since I was in 3rd grade, so why is there so much focus on that in foreign-language education? Like - I took a (different) foreign language for all 4 years of high school, right? And looking back on it, I fully believe the thing that was most effective about that class wasn't all the time we spent doing grammar worksheets or learning adjective endings or memorizing articles, but the regular, constant exposure to the language, and our teacher making us speak it to each other. [And the vocab flashcards. Can't forget those.] I really like reading (fiction and nonfiction), so that's what motivates me to increase my reading comprehension. I like art and music a lot as well - listening to music is a big thing, but also looking up interviews with artists/musicians that I like and trying to interpret their thoughts on their own creative works and artistic process...is that too esoteric? lol

Thank you for this video. This was exactly what I needed right now. I started studying cases after a few months of learning Russian and I quickly lost momentum and interest. The right way indeed seems to be to focus on vocabulary in the beginning. Again, thanks for this video, I needed to hear this. 😊

Cases can't be studied completely as a grammar rule by any foreigners..Many non natives use nominative case when they're not sure what to use or how to change noun/adjective endings.

The truth is that I got bored of learning russian, but I still love the songs, and sometimes i like to translate them, so that's how I'm learning vocabulary now. About grammar I think I'm in a decent level

russian radio is great. music, talk, comedy, business. i started with business radio but ended up listening to music more. learning lyrics i found to be most helpful as songs get regular airplay versus someone saying the news, those sentences likely won’t get repeated again. so there is something to repetitive learning to reinforce what you’ve just learned. if i advance further, i can see my understanding become more advanced that talk radio would be more beneficial than it is now. but music is always fun. edited to add russian music radio as it stands today is far superior to that in the united states because the music stations i listen to have no commercials and they don’t play the same songs every single hour and do not have obnoxious shock jock radio personalities… these are reasons why i stopped listening to u.s. radio. while u.s. radio killed my love of certain songs and bands, i find russian radio brought back my general love of music radio by nurturing the spirit of music and song without the stuff that drove me crazy.

You should look for local stations. They can be better than bigger ones. For example, there are 2 good stations in Ekaterinburg my homecity: "радио си" and "радио пилот".

just think about the mormon missionaries. they get any random person with no language learning experience to learn pretty much any language in a couple of weeks and then they just learn the rest by themselves in the target country
