Swirling shimmering liquid core dice are a lot of fun. I've had a couple people tell me they are daunted by the idea of making them, but they're not too difficult once you do a couple. In this video I'll walk you through my process for making them!

Thank you, thank you, THANK YOU!! I have a cheap dice mold, it works fine for making dice as gifts, but really wanted to make my nephew a set with a liquid core. I really appreciate you sharing this tutorial with everyone, it's a big help. My biggest issue is on my mold the triangle shaped die isn't very big, the internal space is quite small. That will be my next hurtle, finding small enough globe to fit in that one. 😅 Again, thank you so much for this video! ❤

Thanks for this video! I watched this because I was curious how you handled hiding the hole on the glass globe, or if you used a different globe to make these. On one of mine, I actually made one into a Pokeball for a Pokemon TCG damage counters and it masked the hole pretty well. ^_^;; I used Rybonator's (sp?) tutorial for my liquid cores, though I did not add any rubbing alcohol and haven't got the glycerin to try that yet. I once tried a few drops of 99% alcohol to try and keep the mica from clumping (or at least that's what someone told me to try), but for me what ended up happening was that the UV resin ended up sinking into my water and made a goopy mess, vs when I don't put the rubbing alcohol in, the UV resin will just float on top of the water (but my UV resin is kinda thin atm due to summer climate, so I point my UV light onto my balls as I'm putting the UV resin on to seal it. I use Let's Resin "Upgraded crystal clear 250ml" UV resin for mine.

Very helpful tutorial, showing all the steps and even going off to describe other methods and how those would work. I saw that you were quite active in the comments as well, so I was wondering if you could answer a question I couldn't find an answer to elsewhere. For these liquid core dice, is a pressure chamber absolutely necessary? I can get a pretty clean result on regular dice with just warming the resin, swirling slowly with a plastic rod, but I'm really not sure if that technique would work with the tight spaces the glass balls would produce. Do you happen to have any experience in doing this without a pressure chamber?
@alchemistsattic
@alchemistsattic Жыл бұрын
I don't really have any experience trying it without a pressure pot, so I'm honestly not sure. If making dice has been working for you without one, I don't see why you couldn't get the liquid core to work. You could always try it and see! I'd probably recommend trying to coat the inside of the mold with resin before putting the core in, and maybe dipping the core in resin before putting it in as well. My main concern would be getting resin into all the nooks and crannies in the numbers, since I sometimes have issues with that, even with the pressure pot. Take this all with a grain of salt, though, since I haven't actually tried it without a pressure pot.

I honestly wouldn't worry about it too much. The sphere is centered and the liquid isn't fixed to any one side, so it shouldn't really affect the weighting, I'd think.

I got mineral oil. Baby oil might also work, it's basically the same thing, but sometimes it has a colored tint to it. Yeah, it suspends it well, but things don't swirl very much with the oil, at least at the scale I'm working at. Hopefully it works well for your project, though :)

You might need to get a slightly larger sphere. In a perfect world, the sphere would be just big enough to touch the numbers and have them hold the sphere in place, but I know it can be hard to get exactly the right size since there's limited sizes available. So, if the next size up doesn't work (too big, not available, etc.), maybe you could add some uv resin to the outside of the current spheres you have to bulk it up a bit and make it rest against the numbers more firmly?

I got some... I think it was 10mm ones? that fit in my crystal shaped d4s, but I haven't gotten any for my pyramid. I'd need to do some math to figure out what size I'd need for those, but they'd have to be tiny for sure. Lemme do some geometry, just a sec... Ok. I'd roughly estimate around 5mm spheres for my pyramids? If they exist, of course.

I’m so glad I stumbled onto your channel! You remind me of a good friend I had in college. Odd question: do you find that the vibrancy of the alcohol inks dulls over time? I know that for resin pieces (even those with UV protection built in) in direct and indirect sunlight, it can still sometimes degrade over time, but since dice likely won’t be in sunlight much, maybe it isn’t so much of a concern…? I’ve been overly cautious about using alcohol in my resin pieces due to this fear.

Aw, that's so nice. I'm glad you stumbled here, too :) As for your question: I've only been making dice for a couple of years and they don't get much sun so I haven't seen a huge change. That said I know of a friend who had a piece go from purple to pink after it sat in the sun for a while. I've heard that resin pigments have a better lightfastness, but I'm not really sure and you can't get all the same effects with the pigments vs, the inks. You might be able to look up the lightfastness (how pigments fade in light) of some inks actually, I haven't checked.

Depends on how deep the numbers are, tbh, but probably around 2mm smaller than the narrowest part of the die? You want it just barely touching the numbers on the inside so they stay in place, but don't apply pressure to the molds and make them bow outwards.

You might look at thinner resins that won't trap air as much, and possibly molds with sprues or wells for extra resin (to fill in areas as bubbles rise to the surface and act as a vent for air to escape, as opposed to just pure cap molds like I use).

Depends on the powder, I've found. Shimmery mica powder usually does ok (It settles over time, but swirls back up again pretty quick if you shake the die around), but glow in the dark powders seem to end up a gloopy lump stuck to the bottom.

I’m so curious how the weight works. Though I don’t play D&D, I just started a dice collection. I’m just obsessed with dice, they’re so pretty. I’ve heard about weight balancing being very important so you don’t get the same number more than others. How would weight balancing work with this type of dice since I’m sure filling in the hole would put more weight in that are leading to more rolls in its direction?
@alchemistsattic
@alchemistsattic 7 ай бұрын
Honestly, the area with the hole is probably slightly lighter, since the glass is heavier than the resin. That said, it's probably a negligible difference. Technically no die is perfectly weighted (the different numbers on the faces are going to slightly affect the balance, even), but when it comes to actually using the dice that slight difference usually doesn't matter too much. Also, dice (at least mine) are designed so that different value numbers are spread out across the die, so even if the die is slightly weighted towards one end, you should still get a broad range of values that you roll.

@@alchemistsattic When you put them in the pressure pot, you just leave the lids on, right? You don't in any way de-gas the resin without the lid first? And how long do you leave them in the pot before taking them out? I'm gonna get one next month I believe(as well as some fresh resin, it's surprising how much expired resin resembles pee....), so a few pointers from someone who's clearly a pro at this would be awesome :D
@alchemistsattic
@alchemistsattic Жыл бұрын
@@Anarasha I do usually let my molds sit on the table a minute before putting the lids on (usually just while I'm making a couple other sets of dice, not super long) so any air bubbles have a chance to rise to the surface, and then I spritz the top of the resin with some isopropyl alcohol to pop those bubbles before putting the lids on, but I don't use a vacuum chamber or anything, just the pressure pot. The pressure pot really does wonders! (you might go look at the end of one of my dice pouring livestreams if you want to see my process of putting lids on more. It's nothing exciting, but you'll be able to see what I mean.) And time in the pressure pot really depends on cure time of the resin you're using and temperature. I usually wait around 24 hours since that's the, like, "soft" cure time on my resin (gotta wait 48 hours for full cure enough to sand), but I'll also go and check the resin in my mixing cup before taking things out to see if it's still soft or sticks to itself if I crumple it up into a ball (if it does stick, it's too soft to take out). But for example, I was leaving things a few extra hours this winter when it was cold in the room my pressure pot is in, as the cold slowed down how fast it cured. And I know what you mean about the resin. I have some old stuff I need to toss out that is SO yellow, lol

@@Anarasha I got a paint pot from Harbor Freight and then converted it into a pressure pot myself. There's videos around on how to do that (not sure of any specific one, but I know I watched one to set mine up). why not use plastic from a soda bottle (may be able to find appropriately large leather hole puncher), and some epoxy/resin, to glue it shut without any bubbles? Yeah, dice making can take a lot of materials. I've built up a lot of my pigments and stuff over the few years I've been doing this, and I inherited some of it from family members (like, I got some mica powders from my grandma who's not using them anymore, for example). You can make dice without a lot of things, but there's still a barrier to entry for sure with needing molds and resin and safety equipment and the like. I'm thinking of doing a video soon on different kinds of materials and equipment for dice making, and it's a LOT- some of it optional and some not.
