I literally just did this the other day! I'm relatively new to mycology, I followed the Uncle Ben's tek to shoebox for my first flush harvested last week. I'm so glad I found your channel as I tried using my Instant Pot for my first attempt at this very thing a day or so before you posted. I was very close to getting a pressure cooker specifically for mycology but if I can use what I already have?! Sheeeiiit! I had an LC syringe that was gifted to me, there was the smallest bit of culture in it that I have been holding onto for a while. Finally decided to try it out with honey at 4% and the clouds of mycelium less than a week later is astounding! Thank you for your videos! 🙏

Ideally you want 0.2-0.4% for your nutrients. Anything above 1% is too nutrient rich and can stall out the mycelium (due to a decreased necessity to expand to find nutrients) and exponentially increases contamination risks.

That is great to hear, thanks for sharing. I'm glad you are having success with the same methods. There are many ways to play with fungi, and having affordable options is a bonus. I started using the instant pot for the same reason, and haven't needed to upgrade since it's working so well. I use 2 of them for all my mycology needs.

@@doloinc I haven't run into this issue over the past few years, have you? I've played around with several different amounts of sugars and additives and haven't found much difference in growth. I've seen Mossy creek mushrooms even attempted added way more than 4% with even more accelerated growth.

Thanks so much for this, I just bought a 7.8l Instapot for this exact purpose and it came with no instructions as i picked it up 2nd hand for a good price.

Do you loosen the lids of the jars a quarter turn in the instant pot as i was advised with the lids that i bought suggest to do? Thanks for the video btw

By far the best vid out there in regards to liquid culture & instant pot. Liked & subscribed. Thanks man :) Tonight I’ll be pressure cooking for the first time and then inoculating some pink & golden oyster. Wish me luck guys!

Best of luck, and just keep trying, I'm sure you'll have success. I wish I had this info available years ago when I first was interested, just paying it forward. Appreciate the kind comment.

how to prevent caramelization?

I made lids with 22M filter patches and self healing ports, would those work for this? Also can you tell me where you purchase a stir plate? Thank you!

"As you can see, all the sugar has been dissolved...". It looked to me as if there was sediment on the bottom of the jar, and you also made no mention of the yellowing of the water, which I assume was caramelization. Did that present any problem for that culture? You also failed to mention the amount you squirted in from your syringe. Is 1cc good enough for a 500ml jar?

You are correct, just a quick demo, not enough time to explain everything involved in the process. Sediment is caused by the malt extract, it disappears as the mycelium eat it within days. The slight caramelization has never been an issue and hard to avoid, you can really over caramelize it without any noticeable problems. I think it is over stated and unavoidable. You can inoculate with any amount, even just a tiny piece of mycelium, just like on agar. The more you add the faster it will colonize the substrate, I have added as little as 1ml up to 12ml.

@@LowTechMycology Thanks for clearing that up. I've seen several videos showing crystal-clear solution, but I have not been able to avoid some caramelization with the temperature required.

@@danherring5676NBD, also depends on time cooked and what sugar source is used, corn syrup, honey, malt extract, dextrose, etc.

@3:22 - Funny story - I made 4 LC jars. I didn't have glass beads so I used a couple of decorative polished rocks that I had. I had boiled the rocks for about 1 hour prior to making the LC. All of those LCs ended up being contaminated. The rocks were the issue. The jars that had the rocks had bubbles coming off the rocks when I opened the pressure cooker. All my LC since has been plain - sans agitators. I noticed that you had some floaters in the broth. So do I. It frustrates me. I am only using karo and distilled water.

I keep my mix plate on the lowest setting for days at a time. Def seems to speed up the process in the beginning.

If you double the amount of water do you double the amount of malt extract and dextrose?

Yep, you can expand the recipe as much as you require.

The more often you stir, the more it will grow. It will also need to be oxygenated and this will happen when stirring. You can daily, every other day or once a week, lots of ways to work with the mycelium.

Why do you use such a small amount of liquid in your jars? Was that just to make the video?
@LowTechMycology

Just needed a small amount at the time for what I was working with, testing out new varieties. Didn't want to waste any I wouldn't be using, but you can add as much or as little as you require.

The mycelium will eat it right up in no time, nothing to worry about. I had the same thing when only using malt extract and I thought I messed it up..
