I use 1/4 cup per load. I also add vinegar to the rinse cycle for softness. Works amazing! This soap cost approx $5 to make which averages out to $.37 per load of laundry. IMO, it works just as well as commercial brands without any harsh chemicals. Four days for laundry.... that is insane!

Yes, distilled water is used for this type of soap. The coconut oil I used was 76... the 92 was a typo.

You could substitute olive oil for the coconut oil... smaller amount of bubbles. But be sure to run your recipe through the soap calculator. Because we neutralized it, you could use this for hand soap but it may be a bit on the drying side.

I am a tester. lol :) The transparent soap is fun. A great way to add embeds to cp soap without have to worry about the m+p melting during the gel phase.

Borax is also a great alternative for neutralizing the soap. I use citric acid because it is just what I prefer.

You say you are adding citric at 1%. Is that 1% of the weight of your paste or 1% of the oils in your recipe? Also, were you adding powdered citric, or did you have it diluted in water?

Thank you for the interesting and informative video. I'm going to adapt this for hand soap. If you wanted to add an exfoliant, like poppy seed or ground walnut shells, would you add that at the stage where you said to add the fragrance? Also, what was the pH of your final product? Many thanks!

soaping101 -- thanks for all your great vids!--my question is...if you got carried away and overmixed your soap, and even though it didn't get to the volcano stage, it got solid far faster (within 30 minutes), and then was cooked but still seemed a bit like some oils weren't fully saponified...and then was neutralized (with borax)...and it separates when cool..is it salvagable? I know I didn't do it right, but is my soap wasted and should i just start over? Thanks!

Hi breezy! Just think ~ those women couldn't just zap a microwave dinner or zip out to Mc'D's to grab fast food for her family either. She still had to cook from scratch over a wood fire that was a job in itself. My older sister used a wringer washer when her kids were young ~ she swore by it...said the automatics didnt clean properly HEE Fill it at the laundry tubs with scalding water....sheets, whites, towels first then gradually darker colours...wring into rinse water, then on& on phew

My grandmother used a wringer dryer (replaced the washer with a "contemporary" one) until she moved into a retirement home in the 80's. I thought THAT was time intensive, My husband irons his shirts (says it's relaxing) which is just fine with me. I don't mind doing laundry, but don't care to iron. 4 days...yeow!

I personally think it's a fabulous idea....let's get the mouse!! Yeah, overslept a bit today being a holiday and all, but eventually made it to class. There weren't any seats in your area, so I just grabbed one in back and was happy to not have to hold the wall up. :-D

Yes I will be I suppose, I fell back in the corner where there was a big spiders web and it got all over my hair. Some of it got in my eye and when I tried to back up and get out of it the spider landed on my nose. I flicked it off and now it is in my shoe but I can't turn around and bend over at the same time the closet is too small. So I kicked off my shoe and can't find it. The soap molds went everywhere and my shoe is in that pile. Phil wait till I get my hands on you GRRRR.

Oh, we are so fortunate for what we have, that's for sure. Your sister used a wringer washer and had young kids....Bless her! I thought I was complicating life by using cloth diapers when mine were young. I've been without my phone all weekend and realized what an addiction it is for me - always checking, looking things up, hitting Facebook - it's been a relaxing weekend without it, actually. We're so spoiled by technology and conveniences, aren't we? ~Suzy

Hi Linda, Phil ran out of his posh packaging and has had to resort to sending his soap out wrapped in duck tape. He had a roll left and brought it to class this week. Somewhere among these comments Teach mentioned that she wants us all to bring our sneakers and shorts next week because she has been imagining the whole class together physically exercising. Should be fun, that and watching Phil apologise to the class with his little hairy legs on show, hey bring your tweezers he,he,. Luv Rene x

Interesting to see the soap go from opaque to translucent. I'm basically pretty darned lazy and selfish with my off hours, but the idea of being able to add my own fragrance and use a product with controlled ingredients is really appealing. This was a great tutorial, CB - not just in the making of the soap, but in the testing as well. Looking forward to transparent soap next week! xxMMM

Great tut teach ! What volume of this soap is used per load? Is it friendlier than commercial brands? In terms of chemical makeup? I saw a show on TV - Victorian Farm & it took the lady of the house 4 days to do the laundry - wash, dry, starch, iron. Imagine that ? Thanks for another great vid !!!
