Finally, a true liquid laundry soap recipe for those of you not-so-fussed on the gel versions! This is a potassium hydroxide liquid soap recipe, not made from bar soap. Please see the link below to my beginner liquid soap making video if you're new to potassium soap making and would like some more general information about the method before you try this out. (I also have a couple of other LS recipe videos which are also great! - each one varies).
New to soap making? This is important!
Sodium hydroxide and potassium hydroxide (lyes) used in soap making, in granular or flake form or in solution with water/other liquids, as well as raw soap batter, are highly corrosive and require careful and attentive handling and the proper use of personal protective equipment. Hi Elly, I have just made this soap but I was wondering do I need to let it cool before I dilute it? I would prefer to just get it over with now it’s off but it’s still warm and I’m just wondering if I could dilute it at this time or do I have to wait for it to cool? Thanks for your videos!

I made this recently, although I swapped out the rice bran oil for sunflower oil since that’s what I have plenty of. Despite buying the KOH very recently & running my recipe through soapcalc (& adjusting for the citric acid) I also ended up with a layer of super fat. However, it hasn’t affected the detergent. This morning I washed whites, including some dodgy dog stains, on a COLD WASH & it all came out super clean and smelling fresh. Thank you for this video, it has been very helpful.

I'm so glad you showed us a new liquid detergent and that your last recipe jelled after getting cooled. I made 2 batches with your last recipe. They both jelled, I thought I had done something wrong! So thank you for clarifying this for us. I still really love the jelled soap, it cleans our clothes very well!! By the way it's winter here so it doesn't take long for things to cool. I did reheat and melt down both batches so I could put them in jars instead of bottles.

The extra fat might be due to the addition of citric acid... not sure if we need to adjust the KOH amount like NAOH while adding the acid... But either ways I think the liquid soap came out a winner... love the lather❤ Thank you Elly!
@EllysEverydaySoapMaking
@EllysEverydaySoapMaking 4 ай бұрын
Thanks, yes I did adjust the KOH to account for the citric acid. The blog post (link in description) details some more of my musings about what happened to get the superfat. I think it's the variation in SAP values too. Calculators all use averages!

Hi Elly, what a great video and a great alternative to the laundry bar soap recipe I currently use (yours) for the laundry. I’d be keen to find out how adding the washing soda goes as I love that cheap , effective product so much 😂 I find these home made products , including the 50/50 water and white vinegar as a fabric softener, really work well. My front loader never gets scum build up now whereas in the past , when I used store bought fabric softener, and powder, there was always a grey, scummy residue in the part where the soap and softener go. My machine is years old and still sparking clean . Well done Elly Burpengary Jo 😊

Hi Elly! I really appreciate this new video, thank you! I made your previous recipe which did turn to a pretty solid gel. I've been diluting it in a little hot water before adding to my laundry, and it works, but it's not so convenient. My question is: would a crockpot be the preferred vessel to use? I have one which I've used to make other soap batches, including the "gel" laundry soap. Can't wait to try this true liquid laundry soap recipe❣🙏

That's a great question. I'm not sure how effective baking soda would be, but it's worth a try. I'm actually thinking of mixing some of this LS with a solution of washing soda and water, and see how they go together. My bar soap laundry gel recipe works wonderfully and it has washing soda incorporated (also, you can make washing soda from baking soda - pretty easy, google can tell you how 😉)

Once it was done - I used the clear water method and it was very clear, but after a bit I noticed oil in the soap. ?? Therefore my soap when I dilute it is not totally clear 😢 bummer. It works but I want it clear. Thanks for your input

Hi Elly, I've just made this soap in my crockpot and once it reached the custardy phase it firmed up very quickly! I have 2 questions: 1. My soap was milky too when I did the ph test... when you say that your potassium hydroxide was quite old, how old is quite old? Mine is maybe only a year old but I'm not sure how old too old is. 2. Once the soap is saponified, when can you start the dilution process? You were busy and took your time, but how long should you wait ideally? Thanks so much for all that you do, and how well you do it!

Great video, thanks so much, Elly! I tried the one last week and my soap congealed quite a bit. It was 100% coconut oil, so I think that had a lot to do with it. I will be trying this one soon. May I ask, how old was that lye, do you think? This is the first I've ever heard of lye getting old, and now I'm nervous bc I have a big box of lye that's been there for a few years. 😬 Also, would you say that when warming up the soap and water to make the dilution, that that would be a good time to add washing soda? P.S. That fatty layer of soap would probably be perfect to use to wash dishes. 🤔
@EllysEverydaySoapMaking
@EllysEverydaySoapMaking 4 ай бұрын
Thanks, great comment. Well, I'd say my little tub of KOH is at least 5 years old! It really depends on storage though, and humidity. I wrote a bit more about what could have gone wrong in the blog post, so that might help explain further. I really wanted to add washing soda to this, but it's not something I've tried yet with liquid soap, so I thought I'd just keep this as a plain soap to start with. I am going to try adding some diluted (in water) washing soda to this now and see how it goes. I'll share if the results are good. The washing soda does really seem to improve the performance I think!

I wouldn't bother with baking soda, and I haven't tried washing soda with this yet either. I thought I'd make a simple all-soap recipe this time. I think adding in a washing soda solution may enhance it, but I haven't tried it yet.

@EllysEverydaySoapMaking
@EllysEverydaySoapMaking 4 ай бұрын
Thanks Katie! Unfortunately coconut oil is quite essential for this recipe. It makes the most 'cleansing' soap. There are some other oils that behave similarly, eg. palm kernel oil, but you'd have to recalculate a new recipe to use that instead of the coconut.

Last time we talked about making lye from wood ash and you said it was difficult to make lye a consistent strength... it looks like there are ways to adjust for that. Is there a way to test your lye, (either sodium or potassium) before mixing on the stove, for it's strength. I'm thinking that if you knew your lye was weak at the time of measuring... that you could add a bit more and get the excellent results that you expect? 💖🌞🌵😷

Generally speaking, NaOH is used for bar soap, and KOH (potassium hydroxide) for liquid soap. NaOH makes solid soap, KOH makes paste which you can dilute without it wanting to turn back to a solid.

Dear Elly, I would like to ask if it would not be better to add enough water right at the beginning of the production process? So that later there is no need to dilute the mass of soap with water, and the production process itself with more liquid soap should be easier than with solid soap.
@EllysEverydaySoapMaking
@EllysEverydaySoapMaking 4 ай бұрын
Hi, no, it's best to keep the water content low and make a soap paste before dilution. Otherwise the lye is too dilute and it's very hard to achieve saponification.
