I'm very far away from polynesia, being from northern Europe. But spinning poi has given me tons of purpose lately and it has provided an escape during a hard period in life. I'm also doing it as kind of a tribute to my former best friend who died 6 years ago. He used to be a fire spinner and i want to keep his memory alive in my own way. I'm doing some research into the origins

No such thing as a Poi …… “ BALL “ ! ??? ….. No disrespect but growing with this Taonga ( Gift ) the “ POI “ was and is not referred to as a BALL ! Our Taonga are shared and demonstrated to exhibit control , discipline and to explain our Stories ….like all the Arts , to translate the Maori Culture , Customs and Sacred Traditions . Please refer to the Poi as simply that . “ The POI .” It’s practical purpose is , as used in earlier times by the Male Warriors with heavier Filling ,most likely Soils or clays as you rightly stated. Thanks for taking the time to express your craft to others , please take care with our Taonga ,….so easily open to interpretation when teaching , on the web .

In Hawaii, poi is a food, and I think that's why you'll hear Hawaiians refer to Māori poi as "poi balls" to differentiate from poi the food. I don't think any disrespect is meant. Also, please bear in mind that Hawaiians suffered a LOT under the US govt. No expression of culture was allowed, and was deemed illegal.
