How to Make Marmalade at Home - A Simple Step-by-Step Guide (Seville Orange Season)

This week, I’m sharing my updated and simplified marmalade recipe, which I think is the easiest method yet. Seville oranges are only in season for a short time, so it’s all hands on deck in my kitchen! I walk you through the whole process, from boiling and softening the oranges to slicing them into perfect shreds by hand. I also show how to extract pectin for a great set and the best way to jar and store your marmalade.
Over the years, I’ve developed a real love for marmalade, though I didn’t like it at first. Now it’s a staple for us, whether it’s on sourdough toast, in Christmas cakes, or even in bread and butter pudding! I prefer doing things by hand, finding it therapeutic and rewarding, though I do envy those with vintage marmalade shredders.
If you’re new to marmalade making or want to give my method a try, I’ll show you how to make this classic preserve in a way that fits into busy family life. It’s a labour of love but so worth it!
Love, Charlie x

I've got to say these videos have been helping with my anxiety so much. I put on your weekly vlogs or a how to make video while I plod round the house doing chores and it keeps me company. I've found I actually enjoy household tasks a lot more - I clean my space more often and I bake and cook more. It gets me out of my head a bit! All that to say I really like your videos and keep doing what you're doing - it's great and I learn so much!

Loved following this recipe, thank you! I think I didn't get mine as "set" as it might have been, but it's not too runny and it's so delicious! First time I've made marmalade. Thank you so much. You star. ❤👍

Hi Charlie, gosh that’s certainly a labour of love but you really do enjoy making it! You mentioned your sourdough bread and gave us a quick glance at it, would love to see more please. Would you be able to do a video showing how you make your starter and explain the whole process from beginning to the end result of a lovely loaf as I’ve never been very successful in my endeavours with sourdough, so your expertise and experience would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks, Wendy x

@ I thought that might be the case , but as I’m properly one off your oldest followers I didn’t join your members club and always loved cooking and have nearly all Mary berry books I have years of experience wasn’t sure I would learn anything differently also absolutely useless on line watching a you tube is about my limit like you dyslexic! But thank you very much for replying. ( found you from looking for Aga demos and horsey content.

Just a matter of interest, do you have an extractor fan, if not do you find, over time, surface's get dirty from the steam etc. x

Lovely vlog Charlie, I'm, giving marmalade a go for the first time either this week or next. The recipe document that you very kindly shared differs a little from your video. In the video you add the muslin bag AND the shreds back to the water to simmer for an "hour or two". In the attached recipe, you simmer your muslin bag for an hour whilst you're cutting your shreds and you don't add the shreds back until you're adding the sugar - which would you say is the best method please? I'm interested to see you don't use wax discs, do you know, what, if anything do they bring to the party? I guess they're not essential as you don't appear to use them x
