I also tutored CS at UB and worked as a TA under Kris Schindler. Tutoring made a lot more money than being a TA, especially for filthy rich international students who shell out hella money to get someone to basically do their homework for them.

Perhaps it is a little different answer from what you’d expect, but I will still say it: Freelancing, teaching, and working regular coding jobs is all good. But before that, one universal advice I can give is if you want to make any money at all by coding, make coding your hobby. Doing it for money simply won’t lead you anywhere. If you are ready to do it just for fun, you’ll be making money soon.
@macroxela5 ай бұрын
Disagree with this, this a very American way of thinking. You can make good money coding even if it is not your hobby. As long as it is not something you hate, you can use any skill to make money.
@kilovolt24945 ай бұрын
@@macroxela you will be outcompeted, 100%. I promise you. I have seen people trying to do that without spending extra time learning something new or practicing what they know, they come to the technical interview - there always a dude who can do it better. Just because it was a hobby to him, he tinkered with it extra time. Is it not like this in your country? How much software engineers are getting paid there?
@macroxela5 ай бұрын
@@kilovolt2494 software engineers don't get paid as much in Europe but that's because we are guaranteed benefits many American companies don't offer. And we tend to value work-life balance in Europe more than America. You will find most Europeans disconnecting from their jobs after work. It's kind of expected. Will programmers who don't take programming as their hobby be outcompeted? Sometimes but not always. Once you have several years of experience and evidence to back it up, that will have a lot more influence than whatever you do as a hobby. I'm not completely familiar with how the American market is but based on friends and former classmates who work and live there, what I said still holds true. Many of them easily get jobs paying six figure salaries and they don't program as a hobby. They simply know their stuff really well. Perhaps this is not as common in the US as in Europe but it is still there.
@macroxela5 ай бұрын
@@kilovolt2494 that is sometimes true but not always. And I'm saying this as an American who has worked in the US and Europe. I'm not as familiar with recent changes in the American market since I have spent several years in Europe now but based on what friends and former classmates/colleagues still working in the US have told me, you can still get six figure salaries as a programmer without having it as your hobby. Many changed jobs without having worked on any projects outside of work. You just have to be good at what you do and have the proper connections. I don't doubt what you said is true for certain companies and tech sectors (FAANG and some startups or fintech come to mind) but outside of those, it is perfectly fine to program only during your job and not outside of it. Some industries even encourage this to some extent. Many defense contractors pay high salaries yet don't expect and sometimes don't even want you working on tech stuff outside of work. Here in Europe programmers don't get paid anywhere near as much as in the US but that is because we are guaranteed a lot more benefits and worker's protections that are not guaranteed and sometimes not provided in the US. For example, in Germany it is required by law to have at least 20 vacation days in addition to national and state holidays. And Germany is on the low-end for this compared to most other European countries who offer more vacation days. You can always negotiate for more, common practice is at least 30 days excluding national holidays. It is also ingrained within most European cultures that you work to live, not live to work (American style). Which is why people here value and expect a good work-life balance. So you will find most people actively disconnecting from their jobs after work.

I've known how to code for 20 years and haven't made a penny off it. I just don't put myself out there. I think the biggest turn off is the algorithms and all that bullshit you have to go through to get through the interview. I could do them, I just don't want to. So, coding has just ended up being something I do for myself. I wrote my own file sync program for my external backups. Coding a video game in Unity right now. Wrote special programs to rearrange data in RAW image files, etc. I also get the feeling that programmers aren't really wanted. I've never felt like my skills were ever valued by anyone.
